OVERVIEW OF VIETNAMESE CONTEXT

Slender like a monochord (đàn bầu), this S-shaped land extends 331,114 km¬2, with a population of 86 million habitants, divided into three regions: North, Central and South. It is located along the Pacific Ocean and separated from the rest of the peninsula by mountain ranges and hill country. It is surrounded by China on the north, and by Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia on the west. Because of the administrative management of the bureaucratic and subsidized period, the country lags behind gravely in many aspects. Against the backdrop of hyperinflation, food shortages, and structural imbalances in the economy, at the Sixth Party Congress, in December 1986, the government introduced a comprehensive reform program known as “đổi mới” ("renovation"). After the event of “renovation” (đổi mới) or “opening the door” (mở cửa), the situation seemed changed, though not much. The way of thinking was renewed along with the management, the structures, “lines and policies” after enclosing in the circle so-called “socialist and communist ideals”, Vietnam was saved from the dangerous state and could reach some achievements in the economic, cultural and social field, and, at the same time, integrate gradually into the rhythm of international community .

Audience with the Pope

Well, the Tet outside VN has no sense... But even in VN someone cannot have a Happy Tet! The inflation and the cold weather are the main reasons that why this Tet (Lunar New Year Festival, or Vietnamese New Year’s Day) became less joyful. For the rich, however, there’s no problem!!!!!!
For me, there’s something that gives me a little joy. I met the Pope today, I said that “Father, today is a New Vietnamese Year’s Day! Happy New Year to You!”. He asked me “Vietnamese?”… He is very simple and sweet…. But he forgot to give me a “lucky money”, hehe…
