I really like statistics. More and more, we're able to see usage trends, counts, and more as people start categorizing empirical data rather than just throwing it out.

A few weeks back I decided to see what I could gather about my phone use (I actually started writing this post then), because I'm looking to uprgade again, probably to one of these:I thought, hey, this says a lot about me, and might be interesting to others (in the spirit of not throwing out collected data). So I decided to start a new blog tag trend related to mobile stats. Some phones (like Sony Ericsson's) make it really easy to get your statistics if you know where to look.

*that's about 20 text messages sent a day.. every day, wow that actually surprises me.
*this has to be wrong, since I upload pics and video frequently, perhaps this is the count that I get charged for when not using a data connection (which I understand is the primary means for my picture and video uploads on Cingular/AT&T).
*I don't really use this option much, but I probably should to communitcate with my European friends easier.
*I use the applications on my phone more than any other feature, primarilly Google Maps and Opera Mini Dimension.

And so, since I said this was a tag-style entry, I'm interested to see what Espen, Leila, Jon, Anton, Dustin, Ian, Joe, and Chris do with thier phones.

I make calls on it - and thats rare. I accept calls on it - more frequently. Play Nintendo Midi files - Common.

That is what I do with my phone, that and charge it

I will definitely be gathering some data from my usage but it's going to take me some time to compile everthing. In the past 24 months Ive used 5 different phones. All 5 phones were very different and had feature specific advantages. I'll have to track down all the phones and see what I can learn about myself...

Ooh, this is cool. I will make sure to put something up this next week if not today. I am performing in Chicago this weekend so I might not have time over the weekend. My data shoudl be rather interesting since I just got my phone not that long ago. But I am sure my data usage will be pretty impressive since I have videos and stuff sent to my phone automatically and I upload videos for online usage often.

I recommend the k850. It's got the best feature set out of all of them. I see you've got a load of sounds, so if you're after a comparable sound experience to your current Walkman phone you'll have to get another W series. Otherwise the sound quality without the Walkman software isn't all that good.

I'm waiting for the K850 to come out too, although the joysticky bit looks weird.

I thought it had a jog dial instead of a joypad?

theoddbod Saturday, July 21, 2007 9:46:00 PM

I don't know, I've never seen one in the flesh. I can only see a funny green square with two buttons in the middle of it where a joystick would be on the other K models.

So I see. I'd seen the spec sheet but not the phone before. Looks like it's using the two and five keys for up and down. Which means they're getting rid of the numeric menu shortcuts.

theoddbod Saturday, July 21, 2007 10:04:23 PM

If you look at it closely, it looks like there's a 4-way pad surrounding those two buttons, so up and down may be unchanged.

yeah, it allows for a more compact keypad area, but at a bit of a usability sacrifice i think... the video on the k850 page, link above, illustrates the usage well.

I'd say the T650 is the best one of the four phones listed. Its handling and design are pure awesomeness. I've played around with the T650 and K810, but had the S500 shortly in my hand as well. I really like the keypad outfit and the 5-way-navkey. Joysticks are less convenient to use over an extended period of time, in my opinion.

it's all available through various menus in the phone's settings.

In the about area, or logging onto the usage report from phone companies site using your own log in info

Opera Mini is great for weak cell service or even very crowded cell area (ball park)
