There are 2 news articles that caught my attention this week.
The first was the news that the new pope, bless his little cotton socks, was contemplating allowing Catholics around the world to use condoms as long as it was to stop the spread of disease. Now I can see his point. Millions of people are at risk of developing hiv and they need some sort of protection. The thing I do have issues with is the fact that they condemn millions of people to lives of poverty because they are not willing to allow the use of contreception in order to reduce family size, thereby leading to better education etc.
The second article was about a German prostitute. She specialised in offering her services for people with disabilities. Apparently, the moralists are up in arms. She sees it as offering a valuable service and they are appalled. Apparently they feel that the disabled should lead sexless, loveless lives, without any intimate contact. In Denmark, the government actually pays for any person with disability to visit a sex worker once per month. Visits are arranged by the carer and lots of people take up the offer.There is no intercourse, but sexual relief is offered in other ways. The lady offering the service dealt only with regular clients, on a regular basis, and even received birthday cards and presents off her clients. One of her regular visitors has his appointments made by his mother. He was introduced to her after becoming sexually frustrated and trying to sexually assault a female patient. After being inroduced , he not only received sexual relief, but his entire attitude towards women altered dramatically.
If the Danes can be so forward thinking and radical, then, a Church with hundreds of years of entrenchment with regard to sex and contreception should be able to go one step further and allow its use in all cases.
