The Curse of the Wet and Soggy

,

Why is it that cats want to be especially friendly when they have just come in from the wet? Do I really need damp, dirty feet on my trousers? Typical moggies!

After weeks, no months, of pretty dry weather the skies have opened up to remind us why we have such a 'green and pleasant land'. Huh! Still it remind me of a conversation with Onya – she was complaining about how dry it had been in Wales! All things are relative however – she came from the west of Ireland where a wholly dry day was almost unknown.

It's all a question of perspective I'm told. Unfortunately this simple truth did not pacify my opponent last week. I should say at this point that I am normally the Lilliputian amongst dice rollers – regular ones and twos to the opposition fives and sixes. Indeed I proudly share the annual wooden spoon with Tim. If you need a handicap have one of us as a sub-general (or if you are feeling particularly masochistic – both of us).

Picture the scene dear reader - I was in the position of needing to loose only one more element/stand for my command to pack up and go home. A far too bold Knight had got itself flanked on both sides and to the rear as well as facing the enemy C-in-C (who gets a bonus). The result was a foregone conclusion!

This is when serendipity took a hand. Another Knight burst through some warband to find itself behind enemy lines. The surrounded Knight threw a six and managed to hold position. My opponents then threw badly for movement dice. Yet another six meant I lived to fight on into my bound. I had thrown four sixes in a row (for combat).

Our turn and good movement dice. My stray Knight was able to attack the enemy C-in-C in the side. In combat my opponent threw a four – only a six could beat it! Apparently Andy could talk of nothing else in the pub post game.

This week I started off again throwing sixes but it soon faded back to my usual (low) standard. Wouldn't want to ruin a hard earned reputation would I? Now I can proudly rejoin Tim at the bottom of the heap.

So I can look on with reasonable equanimity at the dirty paw prints over my bed. At least it's only the dust cover that will need to go through the wash! Pity life's other problems can't be dealt with quite so easily!
