Too Many Mice

The economists amongst us, and those who had to do the subject, will have had the laws of Supply and Demand drummed into them. Basically if there are too many mice trying to nibble the same piece of cheese then some of them will lose out. This pretty basic idea doesn't, unfortunately, take into account corporate greed.

Since 24th July I have had no broadband service. All the kids are off on holiday and gobbling up the bandwidth. As I'm at the end of the line my miserable 0.5 Mb rate disappears completely. It's only by a friend's goodwill that I can get onto the net at all (her service has been reduced from 1.7 Mb to 1 Mb).

My ISP (talktalk) did a selling blitz in my area a couple of years ago, signing up all and sundry. Recently another salesman turned up at my door trying to sell me telephone and broadband services!

Companies are always trying to increase their market share. They seem to have a lemming-like vision. It doesn't matter if they fall over a cliff - only that they are carrying a larger piece of pie.

Gaining market share involves taking profit from another company and it feeds the gaping maw of advertising. Marketing has to be paid for. Advertising is expensive. Who pays in the end?

We are in a recession, some say depression, caused by corporate greed and mismanagement. Isn't it time we took a long, hard, look at some of our Capitalist / Consumerist practices? Do we really care so little about overall service? Maybe we are just so used to being sold a pup!

Meanwhile I will try to blog as and when I can.
