Gordion Knot Re-visited

No, dear reader, I'm not referring to any government chinanigans but rather the antics of the gas men.

On the Friday before last (only 4 days later than scheduled) men arrived carrying gaudy purple plastic barriers. They plonked them down in a seemingly random fashion along the road and in some gardens. Arcane symbols started to appear on the footpath. Men and diggers were in evidence.

Over the next week there was much noise (often starting illegally BEFORE 08:00 hrs). The number of holes increased exponentially like the work of a rabid, overgrown, mole. Traffic chaos was the order of the day. Then suddenly silence!

For a whole day the gas men were missing. This Thursday an odd van turned up just as dusk was falling. On Friday two men could be seen operating a machine which looked like a metal worm. It reminded me of an internal investigation I once had. For what were they searching?

It turns out that after removing gas supplies to one side of the street they carried out a necessary safety check. Good job they did - over half of the residents still had gas. The strange machine found a main that was not on any of the maps. This will cause a considerable delay in the refurbishment. It will also mean digging up more gardens.

The best laid plans of mice and men!
