From One Chick to Another..

Where under His Wings I find refuge.

Life is a bowl of cherry....tomatoes!

I picked these this morning. My favorite are the orange ones...just like eating candy!

I haven't been down to my garden since before I left..so a lot is awaiting me.:insane:
I am about to head down there right now to pick a gazillion beans...yippee!
Anyhow...after that we are headed to the beach in Clayton...we have make the most of this last day of summer vacation for my hubby.

Back to work...(soon!)

Poor Peter is back to work on Monday. It is a holiday here but unfortunately, unless you are working for the government you are working!

We had a lovely fishing trip last night. I almost caught the "big one"...really, I did! We were trolling our usual spot on Clayton lake and I hooked a fish. It was a big hit...and my rod bent down considerably. The line was WAY out...so I knew it had to be a big one. As I was reeling him in...I felt 3 tugs... "Tug-Tug-Tug"...then nothing. :eyes: It got away! :frown: When I reeled my lure in...I noticed that the last hook was missing!! :eyes: This is a new lure! The fish pulled the hook right off the lure! Peter and I had a good laugh and started to imagine what on earth could have done that! There was one time that I caught a really big pike. He was over 21 inches long..I forgot how heavy he was...and bringing him into the boat was such a thrill I think the whole lake knew about it. I figured whatever it was that got away last night HAD to have been HUGE!
I caught some gorgeous sky pics last night so not all is lost. And I did catch a nice Walleye before the big one got away.

I finally got the pictures from our camping trip uploaded...
Cooking...The 2 Chefs...Father & Son! (I would say the "Son" is pretty darn cute! )

Yup...me in a tent..see? Proof!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I apologize to Lois, I didn't really take any pics of Fort William per say...more of the kids playing in the water there.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I couldn't take pics on the boat since the ride was so bumpy and we were continuously being sprayed by the water.
Also, I had the priveledge of seeing a Belted King Fisher up close.

It was a young one, who, unfortunately died shortly after this pic was taken. Its parents were killed only a day before. I didn't know what to do with him...or I would have tried. But even when my daughter found him, I was pretty sure it was almost too late...his head was all floppy and he was very weak. Their nests were right on the lake shore line...in tunnels. I wonder what killed the parents. :frown:

And here are the cakes I did yesterday...The flower basket one is for a party I am going to this afternoon...My friends son & daughter inlaw and grandson came to live in Canada from Germany...and we are throwing them a shower since they need some essentials.

This one is for my friend -Tina's aunts b-day.

Finally a pic of me & the two youngest in the Ottawa River @ Fort William...
If I look grossed out, it is because I am! There are so many clams in the water I didn't last long in there. It was so hot that I took a quick dip.
The kids really didn't care!

Anyhow, there are many more pics in my albums under "Out & About"
And "Just Because", even pics of bacon frying, tree frogs...etc.
And of course "Cakes Anyone?"
Have a great day everyone!

Home Sweet Home!

Howdy folks, I am home!
We got home at almost 5 p.m. yesterday and haven't really had a break to get on here to post. I had to wash all the pillows when we got back. It rained for 2 out of the 3 nights we camped so everything was damp. Now I have a bunch of other laundry to get to...fun! Of course, I expected the laundry...with a family of 7, there is ALWAYS a lot of laundry, camping or not.
All in all, we had a good time. The first night we had severe thunder & lightening storms passing over the campground all night long. I think I might have gotten about 2-3 hours sleep, MAX. I found myself laying there, listening to the rain pelting down on the tent, watching everything light up around me. Peter and I shared our tent with my 2 youngest children. My youngest son, Noah, talks in his sleep. There was a nylon wall between us, but it is far from soundproof..and he was pushing his hands through and whacking me every so often. :eyes:
The other 3 kids slept in a tent trailer on the lot. My inlaws have their on trailer that they live in for most of the summer.
Our tent is a great quality tent and thankfully things didn't get too wet. The next day- Tuesday was the HOTTEST most oppressive day of the summer by far and everything dried up nicely. I think the temps got up to at least 45 degrees celcius. It was so hot it was oppressive and we decided that would be the day to go on a boat ride to Fort William, Quebec. Fort William was the very last trading post to be in operation. It is now a nice beach with a restaurant/bar with a dock, or you can park your boat on the beach, which is what we did. We drove to Pembroke, then launched the boat there for a good 45 minute boat trip. The Ottawa River was choppy and the ride was bumpy, but it was so much fun!

My mother inlaw came with me, Peter, Amanda, Noah & Jamie-Lynn on the way there, and the 2 older boys went with my father in law in their van- they met us there.
That night, my father inlaw offered me a mild sedative to help me sleep. I gratefully accepted and slept like the dead all night, only to be woken by a dog barking.

Wednesday it rained off & on all day. Peter, myself, and my father inlaw went fishing on the lake by the campsite in the evening. Our trip was cut short due to lightening quickly approaching...we got back to the campsite just in the nick of time before a massive downpour happened...AGAIN! :left: After the storm subsided somewhat, I found out that there were tornado watches called for not too far from us. NICE. :right:
The weather all in all was awful. And of course it was beautiful when we left yesterday. And once again, sunny today.
Thankfully I love my inlaws and there was never a lack of fun, even through the rainstorms. The adults played cards long after the children were put to bed and I am certain that the laughter and fun we had could be heard resonating throughout the entire campsite. We played "Nines", "SkipBo" & "Hearts". My mother inlaw gets a little nasty when she plays cards, and she cheats. We kept a close eye on her needless to say.
Anyhow...I have 2 cakes to do today...so I am off and later I am off to the dentist since I split one of my back teeth on a teensy steak bone last night. It hurts!:frown: I have pics to post later on. So, stay tuned...have a great day!

Goin Camping...

:eyes: Anyone who really knows me is declaring that there are such things as miracles!
I am leaving tomorrow with my family to go camping for 3 nights. Yup, me in a tent!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Thankfully...there are showers and washrooms that I have access too, so not all my luxuries are lost. I am not nearly as vain as I once was when I was younger. Now, I just throw on a baseball cap to cover up bedhead...and I am good to go!
One of my friends at church asked if I was going camping with Peter & the kids and I said "yes I am!" She almost fell over...lol. I guess I have made a name for myself. But...I made a vow last summer to do more with my family, and I intend to stick with it. I wasn't raised in a home that practiced a whole lot of "outdoorsy" activities so I come by it rather honestly. In fact, even living where I live...I have my own mother saying she thought I would never have made it passed the first year. (living in seclusion, with all sorts of bugs & just being so far from the rest of the world) I used to be a "city" girl. Well, I am not a city girl anymore...quite the opposite as most of you can see.
Living in the country for 7 years now...with a big veggie garden, goats, chickens, geese, ducks, dogs, cats, llama, horse...5 children....hey, if I can do it...ANYONE can do it! Don't knock it till you've tried it. I am thankful for my life today.
So, if I have a chance I'll say goodbye tomorrow...if not, consider this goodbye, until thursday folks!
p.s. we have friends coming over to do chores for us when we are gone...so the animals are well taken care of...

Another hot one!

The temps continue to rise, so it seems...about 40 celcius with the humidex factored in.
Yesterday, I picked about 5-6 lbs of green beans...I thought I was gonna melt into a puddle in the garden. :left:
It was a beautiful morning this morning...though very hot & humid already at 9 a.m.
After I got Samson out of the barn & walked, I brought my camera out to snap a few pics.
My silly "people" hen -SnoFlake, checking out the camera...
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
We have been wondering where this silly chicken has been laying her eggs...she found a spot ABOVE the barn entrance...crazy chick!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Here is Samson, smiling for the camera!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
And I can't go anywhere in the fowl pen without these 2 following me for some attention!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This was the scene behind the barn...Felix guarding his charge of six, naughty goats.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

These goats have discovered a way out of the field...not enough grass to eat I suppose....NOT!! They have so much, but insist the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. I caught this pic when they were waiting for me to leave & then they would try to break out again...GRRRRRRR!!:irked:
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Anyhow....all for now...Have a good one!

WOW! I am a MOW!...

I just got done cooling down in a bath after picking green beans and spreading wood shavings on the ground under my tomatoes and cucumbers only to discover that I am the Member of the Week!
For this, I am truly honored! :o: :D
Thank you Opera...this has become quite a nice little part of my life. I have made many friends here and I am very thankful that I have a place to vent...to write down stuff I actually find rather boring only to discover that I am actually entertaining a handful of people. Thanks again! Blessings to all... ~Cheryl

Who knew?...

..That Ontario, Canada was home to one of the most amazing beaches around?
That when you walked up over a rather normal inclination...that there would be this surreal scene set before you?
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
It was as if, we stepped out of Ontario, onto a beautiful ocean front resort. Waves lapping the coast line...people strewn all over the soft white sand for miles...umbrella's set up everywhere. It was absolutely fantastic!

It has been eons since I bought & actually donned a bathing suit. I actually got up the nerve to put one on, on Wednesday when we went for a dip in the Madawaska River at the Burnstown Beach. Then again yesterday when we went to "Sandbanks Provincial Park" in Picton, Ontario.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
The last time I was amazed at the scenery of water front such as I was yesterday, was when I was a young teen in Barbados (actually Florida was the last time..lol..shows how old I am, I am forgetful! :left: ) many years ago.
We spent most of the day bobbing in the waves and trying to see how deep we could get before the water went over our heads. We are all a little darker in colour today as the best of sunscreens can't keep all the sun off of you...even with several applications.
I took a bunch of pics...not of us, but of the beach & water. Also a beautiful field of Sunflowers I made Peter stop at so I could get out and capture it. (I have never seen a field of sunflowers before.)
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I laughed as we drove towards Highway 401...we passed through Athens, and then Portland.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Funny how we can't seem to come up with original names.
As soon as I upload the pictures I will post them. Have a great day!

Just a pic

My daughter took this whilst I was holding the little patient! Doesn't she look comfy?

Just call me the chicken doctor.

During chores yesterday, I discovered that one of my Silver Sebright pullets wasn't doing very well.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I was able to pick her up and she just shut her eyes in my hands.
Very strange..so I brought her in the house. She was extremely dehydrated since she drank like she has never had a sip of water in her life. I think that the heat got to her, she got weak and couldn't get to the waterer which is just up on a small box to keep it from getting full of shavings and straw. She is now eating & drinking normally, but still not 100%.
Other than our "people" chicken, SnoFlake...
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
...I have never met a more docile, friendly bird. She hopped up onto my computer desk and then onto the mouse...then onto the keyboard as if she had something to share!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I have 6 Sebrights. 3 Golden Laced and 3 Silver Laced. 1 boy & 2 girls of each colour. I really was blessed in the ratio's since it was impossible to have them sexed as day olds when I bought them. They will be spending the winter in the basement in our rabbit hutch since they are so small and apparently extremely fragile. I have never been more impressed with chicken temperments as I am with these little guys.
I left the room a short while ago to get some toast...and she squawked up a storm as if to say, "Hey! where are you going!? Come back!" That's when she hopped out of the box she was in.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
(pic of my chicken's feet as she flew up onto my mouse pad)
She is now back in her box sleeping as if completely spent from all the activity from moments before. I wish I knew exactly what is wrong with her. I just pray she'll pull through. She is drinking water with antibiotic/electrolyte's in it and eating special food to perk her up. I might fry her up an egg later. Anyhow, that is all for now...a great start to Monday..lol

*EDIT* It is 6:30 p.m. here now, and the chicken is back in the barn...she perked up amazingly and wouldn't stop hopping out of the box.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Also..we went fishing on White Lake. Peter, myself & the 2 youngest. I saw a young Bald Eagle...or that is what I thought it was when I looked up the pic in my National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds.
This thing was sitting next to the most MASSIVE nest I have ever seen.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I caught 2 good sized bass and 2 perch. We are having fish for dinner tonight! YUMMY!
(added to it are the fish I caught 2 nights ago.) Have a good evening.

Bye Bye Kitties!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
The most wonderful thing happened on Friday before we picked up our son.
After I bought my cake pan, my husband & I walked over to the pet store in the mall we were at. Pet Valu always has some animals to see. This time they had 2 very cute kittens in a big cage. They were on display for the "Westminster Pet Sanctuary".
A bunch of posts ago I mentioned that our cat, Peaches, was eating chicks..well, we gave her to an animal shelter out of desperation...I wish I had heard of the Westminster Pet Sanctuary first. The lady at the Pet Valu store said that the WPS was looking for kittens. People adopt kittens from them all the time. They foster them and get them their innoculations and proper care then ship them to good homes. She gave me a phone number to call which I did yesterday..and today, as of now, they are being fostered in a lovely home in Carp.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Last night, we caught all the kittens and put them in a cage. Unfortunately they were TERRIBLY soiled this morning. SO, before I brought them to Carp, my daughter & I bathed all 6 kittens..one at a time. UGH!:yuck: Oh well, I couldn't bring them to their new home all gross and poopy...It was surprisingly easier than I thought.
I took Noah & Amanda with me...we got to see where the kittens were staying...well, let's just say..Kitty heaven! This woman and her family had about 20 some cats I would say..I didn't count them. But we dropped off 6 kittens. We kept one of them...and the momma's we are keeping are going in for spaying, ASAP.
The WPS also foster's dogs. Next time I have some extra cash...I am going to make a donation. They have no idea how much they have helped us.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Anyhow...that's all for today..have a good one!
