It's Finally Mine!!

, ,

I am soooooo excited!:D   :hat:
I have been waiting for one of these for a long time...I even started saving for one, but then spent the money on something that ranked higher in priority.
It's a Kitchen Aid mixer!!!
My old machine was on the brink..I wasn't sure how long she would hold out.
Anyhow, a friend called me last night asking me if I was interested in a really good deal.
From the regular price @ $449.99 to $152.99!!!!! at Sears. You couldn't get it cheaper anywhere else.
Anyhow...this friend was with another lady who was the one who spotted the deal in Ottawa. And she just happened to mention it to my friend. Only a day later & it's in my kitchen already!!!
It's a really nice unit. :chef: My friend's friend even picked it up for me, as she works in Ottawa.

Have a great week-end everyone, I can't wait to play with my new toy! :D

Cookies & more cookies...

, ,

I finally finished baking my sugar cookies & gingerbread cookies.
I also managed to get started in decorating them. :chef:
In all I am sure I baked over 20 dozen...I didn't count. I know that I spent about 6 hours solid in the kitchen today. :eyes:

I found a great recipe for icing for cookies...if anyone would like it, I will gladly give it to you! Have a wonderful week-end!
p.s. Happy Hanukkah to all my Jewish friends!

Butter, Butter, BEURRE!

, ,

Last night, we went into the Prior (town of Arnprior) to drop off Josh @ his cadets program...and then to pick up some ingredients for baking. Christmas baking & my cakes. I bought 10 lbs of butter yesterday!!! :eyes:
Then, today, again in the Prior...on the way out of the bank then to the new Shoppers Drug Mart store's grand opening....I ran into a friend.. (hi Liz! )..and she told me they had butter on sale for $2.77/lb! Almost a $1 cheaper per pound than I paid the day before. p:
Sooooooooo....I bought 4 more lbs. (that was the limit :frown: )
lol..then I asked Peter if he wouldn't mind picking up 4 more after work. So he is. :D
I need the butter for my icing...and for my shortbread cookies. I need to get a crack on my Christmas baking. Gingerbread men, Sugar cookies...and Whipped Shortbread...my usual cookie menu for Christmas.

Anyhow...before I overstimulate you all with my thrilling life stories...I better go, and get some stuff done around here.

I really wish it would stop raining. It is about 14 degrees celcius today...and raining. Then later it is supposed to plummet down to freezing temps. I just hope it stops raining when it does that...or else it'll be messy.  Not to mention, very dangerous & treacherous for driving conditions. Take care everyone!

Cake I did yesterday for the Course I took.

I really didn't learn anything new...weird. But I had fun. I bought some new icing tips which I am always excited about. :D

Have a good day.

I wish this was for me!

I did something I don't normally do with cakes...I actually licked the icing beaters after I was done with the cake. :left:
The Epicure Cocoa I use is the best! Very chocolatey...Super Yummy! :D

My life is far from boring!

, , , ...

I am a little stiff this morning. A bit sore in the back! :left:
I can't decide if it is from a long day of fishing, or from what took place yesterday evening... :right:

Yesterday morning, after I got the kids fed their breaky...I finished the cake for my friend's daughter's wedding shower. You can see the invite there. (another good friend created that one.)
I made the flip-flops on Saturday (out of Marshmallow Fondant) to dry them for yesterday.

After I was all dressed and ready, Peter & I headed off to go fishing on Calabogie Lake.
It was gorgeous there. I caught not one single fish, but I did snap up some nice pics. The view was gorgeous.

Even Peter only caught one fish. :frown:
We spent hours there, but I think it was more for the ambiance than for the fishing.

We got home just in time for me to get the kids lunches for the following day ready, I had a bath, and got ready to go to the shower.
Amanda & I left to go, and I decided I would actually "buckle-in" the cake.
I put the seat belt around the box, and it is a very good thing I did this.
As I headed down Cedar Hill Side Road...just at the bottom of the hill, out from the ditch sprang a huge deer buck!!! :eyes: :yikes:  He had a huge rack on him.
There was no time to swerve to avoid him, he jumped out right as I was passing that spot, so I struck him! :frown: Amanda shreiked...then cried in shock. The deer flew up onto the hood rolled, up & over down the back of the car...then landed on the ground behind the car. There are skid marks on the road as I must have, thankfully, instinctively, slammed the brakes. :eyes: . In shock, I asked Amanda if she was ok...which she was, she wasn't hurt.
I got out of the car..the deer had already gotten up and ran off into the woods across the road. I went over to where I saw one of the car mirrors on the ground...as well as a small tip of the deer's antlers. I picked up the mirror and the antler bit. Then I went across the road to see if I could spot the buck...which I couldn't. I really hope that if I injured him badly enough that he would die quickly and not suffer. If not, I hope I didn't do too much damage. He was a big boy. And Thanks be to GOD!, we were not hurt, the windshield was NOT smashed, the damage was minimal. A small dent on the right side of the car where I connected with the deer.
I still go over & over in my head how it took place. There was NO way I could have spotted him from a distance. He was well hidden in the deep ditch.
I just know that had I not buckled in that cake, it would have been on the floor! That was the most interesting thing! I went back home to show Peter the car, to make sure I could continue on and he gave it a good look-over saying that it was safe to drive.
It was then that I asked Amanda if the cake was ok...I totally forgot about it!
She & I both were amazed about my fore-thought to buckle it in. I would say that was divine inspiration..wouldn't you?
So...I just pray that this doesn't happen again -EVER! Drive safe everyone!

A little disappointed...

, , ,

I made the Battenburg cakes. It was a lot more difficult than I thought. :right:
I figured that next time...I will find an Apricot jam that isn't so chunky.
The jam is used like a glue to hold the cake together.
The marzipan turned out nice...and tasted really good. Actually the entire cake tastes great..it just doesn't look as nice as I wanted.
That's ok though, practice makes perfect..and I anticipate making more of them.

Here's a little Battenburg cake history:
This fancy cake is said to have been named in honor of the marriage of Queen Victoria's granddaughter, Princess Victoria of Hessee-Darmstadt to Prince Louis of Battenberg. Basically, it consists of pink and yellow sponge cake, apricot jam, and marzipan icing.

The reason I am making these tea cakes is from a request I had from a lady who has her own "English Pie Shop". She bakes all sorts of English goodies from home. Mostly meat pies, sausage rolls & such. Her pastry is fantastic. (I bought one.)
Anyhow, she had a request from a customer for a Battenburg cake. She asked me if I could make one and bring her a sample to taste and if she likes it she will refer me to people.
Now, I have to figure out a price for these little cakes.

AND...this is the home-made carrot cake I did. It has a bit of chocolate cream cheese icing to help with the design.
