Footloose and Fancy Free!

I have been childless for the last couple of days!
It's been such a cool feeling. But I do miss the little riggins...
I'll see 2 of them tomorrow. And then I am picking up my daughter from the airport on Sunday. Time sure flies!!

(My mother really enjoys washing her car!  )
I got to spend the day with my mom on Wednesday. We had a lot of fun.
Being in Ottawa, I was able to check out one of my favorite stores...Michael's. (Craft supply store)...I could spend hours in there!
They have an aisle just for MOI!
It's a cake decorating supply aisle!
I was checking out round cake pans. Big ones. I wanted to buy a couple for a pending order for September, and for whatever other order comes my way.
There was a lovely lady there who spoke in a very thick accent. I don't know what it was.
However, she was offering me advice.. "You take the big pans..the deep ones...not the other ones.." :left:
I am thinking... "ok!" She was a customer as well..and was looking for a size she couldn't find.
She said to me, "I don't buy anything here, do you want coupon?"
I said, "Sure!"
She said, "It's 40 Perrrrcent coupon."
I said, "Wow! Great!"
So she gave it to me. I got 40% off of the set of pans. They are a 14 inch, 10 inch and 6 inch set...and they are 3 inches deep.
I am itching to use them!! :D

Anyhow...Thank you dear lady..whoever you are! I think you were an !

Here is the view on the way home on one of the sideroads we take often. It's breathtaking really...

Quick Post- No pics...

, ,

My life has been nutso the last week or so. Just super busy.
I am off in a few minutes to go & help decorate the hall for my son's Gr. 8 graduation ceremony later this evening.

Oh yes, Josh is also one of tonight's Valedictorians. They have 2..a young lady as well! He'll be giving a speech tonight with this other gal.

I am also in charge of the reception snack...(how did that happen? )
And I have a trunk load of pop, plates, forks, napkins, chips..to deliver to the hall.
Not to mention my son also completed another year of cadets on Sunday..and they had the final ceremony for that..and last night there was a meeting discussing his 6 week away--- training excercise- camp that he is leaving for on July 7th. (I've never sent a child away for 6 weeks before! :frown: -- there are going to be a lot of long distance phone charges!!!)
My daughter is also leaving on July 7th for a week away to my brother's place in B.C.

Next week I have a big cake order for a school in a local town..it's their Gr. 8 Graduation on Monday. This is a repeat order for which I am honored! :D
I am attempting to draw and Eiffel tower on top of the cake. Should be interesting.
Also..farm stuff...family stuff..you name it! So...please forgive my slack..and I'll be back on next week with pics.

Oooohh..I can't forget to mention that I'll be receiving a copy of the article in the OFO (Ontario Field Ornithologists) written up about that hummingbird situation. Apparently the man I spoke with has been getting calls from all around North America about it. I have caused a stir in the world of bird-watching! p:

Talk to you all soon...

Where to start? Long post...

, , , ...

There has been quite a few neat little & big things that have happened in the last couple of days...lots of pics...**This post has been edited...apparently the birds we rescued from the doom of traffic were of the American Woodcock family.**

Busy Day Ahead!

, ,

I feel a little guilty for sitting here & catching up on blog postings while I should be working myself ragged outside. p:
I crawled out of bed this morning feeling stiff all over..truly a wonderful sensation.

Why was I stiff? I went down to the veggie garden yesterday...extremely apprehensive since I knew the weeding ahead was going to appear insurmountable! :eyes:
I hand weeded inbetween the lettuce rows and the snap peas...but I needed to prepare the rest of the soil for my major planting which is about to take place...minutes from now!
There was a carpet of little weeds EVERYWHERE! :irked:
So...I got the STIHL gas powered rototiller running..and there I went. This is a smaller unit that has interchangeable bottoms. Whipper-Snipper, Rototiller..& other pieces. We only have the first 2.
IT is heavy..and in the 31 degree weather (37 with humidex factored in)...it seems much heavier! :worried:

I am about to plant my tomato plants which are now on my living room window ledge..growing taller by the second...my cucumber seeds...my beans, carrots....& I think that is it.
I have 5 varieties of tomatoes. I am a bit of a tomato freak. p:

In between I have to drive 2 kids into town, and then finish up with a cake order for tomorrow...then pick up the 2 kids! :ko: :faint:

Oh yes, I also did this cake for an order yesterday. It is a 3-D Teddy Bear. My sister bought me the pan for Christmas 2 years ago, and this was my first time using it. It was a neat experience. I had to make pound cake batter to mix with the cake mix. I had a little left over batter and I was able to make a small loaf for us :chef: ...it was DELICIOUS!

Have a great week-end everyone!

Woody

, , ,

It was 5:45 a.m. :ko:
I heard.....what sounded like a machine gun firing. :insane: I almost hit the ceiling! :eyes:
Turns out, it was a woodpecker. :bomb: Homer: Doh!
They have been waking me up almost every morning lately..tap-tap-tapping on the tin roof.
This is more than enough incentive for me to build the bed & get into my new bedroom...TODAY!
Nice alarm eh? Not to mention the 4 mosquitoes buzzing around our heads and the pair of squirrels I could here fighting or whatever they were doing so early this morning!

Yesterday I got ambitious and built a dresser..and almost have all the drawers done & inserted already!
Today...I am putting the bed together once the boys go camping. My eldest will help me get it together.

Then last night my youngest child/son looked as if he was crying..
So I asked, "what's wrong?" He said, "nothing, my eye is sore. I think I have red eye."
"Red eye?", I replied. "Yes, red eye.", he said.
"Don't you mean, pink eye?" I asked. He said, "Yes pink eye...my friend Faith & Zoe in my class had pink eye."
:eyes:
"How long has your eye been bothering you?" I asked.
He replied, "Since the morning."
:left:

I sent him off to play with a friend all day yesterday.
Anyhow..we ended up in Emerg at the hospital to get him a perscription.

After the hospital we all had a treat at Dairy Queen...we deserved it! I planted all my seeds, and the flowers that my hubby bought..and I built a lot of the furniture for our new room!
Also the children managed to stack a whole bunch of firewood.
So we all worked hard.

Oh yes, I almost forgot to mention..on the way to the hospital..right on the side of the road on a tree were 2 Pileated Woodpeckers! I am so not thrilled that I didn't have my camera with me! They were so beautiful they looked fake. These guys are not normally so public!
These are big birds measuring approx. 17 inches.

Now my dh & the boys are getting ready to go camping over night. He had to work yesterday or else they would already all be gone. So it's just me & the girls today!
We are going to have a blast!
Have a great day you all!

I know I have been M.I.A....

, , ,

I have been ultra busy these last few days. Cake orders are pouring in... And..I have been getting to my spring cleaning in full mode. p:

Not to mention my daughter celebrated her 16th birthday on Wednesday!!!!!!!!! UGH!!!! I am NOT getting old. I am NOT getting old..... p:  Normally I do a post for the kids b-days...I just haven't had the time..I apologize to my sweet daughter!

I need to get outside and start on my gardens..but that'll wait until I am done with the painting of our bedroom. :yuck: We should be laying the flooring by this week-end.
Also...I have found Facebook! I have to say..it is great fun, and I have found people on there that I haven't seen in forever! This blog is actually on there too..thanks to the feed thingy..ya, I know, how technical of me! :o:

Yesterday...my friend called me to let me know about 2 teens that were killed in Pakenham really early yesterday morning. The one young lady-15 years old...was friends with my daughter in Grade 8. :frown:
My heart breaks for these girls- families...and my prayers go up for them and the poor driver that hit them, as they were walking home. It was extremely foggy..and they were on the road. :frown:

What really hit me yesterday is how fragile & precious life is. Let's not take it for granted.
Anyhow...Have an awesome day!

This is really good. How to treat others..

THE WAY WE TREAT PEOPLE

Five (5) lessons to make you think about the way we treat people.

1. - First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady.

During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the ast one:

"What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name?I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.''Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello."I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

2. - Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain

One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride.Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him.

Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached.. It read: "Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along.Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away... God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others."

Sincerely,

Mrs. Nat King Cole.

3 - Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve.

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked. "Fifty cents," replied the waitress. The little boy pulled is hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. "Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient "Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies..

You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

4 - Fourth Important Lesson. - The obstacle in Our Path.

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand!

Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

5 - Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts...

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?" Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

"Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like you do when nobody's watching."

Oh what a beautiful morning...

Oh yes, of course...I also got 3 cake orders in 2 days! This is great news! :D
Anyhow..enjoy the pics (click on them if you want to see more and they will take you to the albums accordingly)...and have a wonderful day!

Happy New Year!

,

I realize I have been pretty quiet for the last week.
I have to admit I was kind of discouraged for a short while. Why? Because my dh was ill when we rang in the New Year. A very short but powerful flu bug kept him in bed.:frown: :yuck:
I ran into the bedroom exactly at midnight to say Happy New Year though.
We rented 2 movies to watch as a family and loads of chicken wings. YUMMY! But it wasn't the same without my hubby...knowing he was suffering in the next room was just no fun for me. The kids seemed to get through it ok though. Kids are pretty resilient, aren't they?
One thing I discovered is that "Over the Hedge" is a VERY funny movie!  My favorite quote in the entire movie has to be by 'Hammy the squirrel'.. "But I like the cookie."

Also, My favorite character is Stella the Skunk.

I had to look up her voice-done by Wanda Sykes...and I knew I recognized it! She plays in that show, "The New Adventures of Old Christine"..which I happen to like..with Julia Louis-Dreyfus..(also from Seinfeld)
I really need to get that movie so I can watch it again. We also rented Pirates of the Caribbean II. Johnny Depp is a hoot in that movie!

No cake orders for the last couple of weeks has left me kind of bored as well. :left:
But I managed to get a start on our bedroom. We are going to be finally finishing it ..so I stripped the bed and cleaned underneath it...I also moved the entire thing to the other side of the bedroom switching places with our enormous dresser. We will be painting the room, putting in a floor, building a new closet. (the room doesn't have a closet) Right now it is just grey pannels on the floor...I don't even know what it's called. So we will be putting in that fake wood flooring. Also we are looking out for a new bedroom set. I would like to get a second hand one...solid wood..so it won't be so expensive. We are buying a mattress set brand new...which I really need because my back has been acting up from the mattress we have now..it is a Sealy but it is about 17 years old. :eyes:

Today I just needed to get out of the house so I ran into town to pick up 2 parcels...one of them being the hat you see in my profile pic. It says "Duck Pride" on it. :D I love it! It is from the "Oregon Ducks" team. (sent by a good friend from Oregon  )

The other parcel is a great calendar of chickens...made by another good friend of mine from Southern Ontario, "Little Chicken Racing Team" has 5 house chickens- they live in his front entrance. :eyes: One of them is "Miss Sippy"..a little black silkie hen I gave him, 2 years ago. Anyhow, each month is a new chickeny pic...and it is adorable! We have a chicken history...and it is a funny one, but I think I have gone on long enough for one post.

Anyhow...Happy New Year...I just know it's gonna be a great year!! :D
