Virgin Ice
Thursday, October 12, 2006 3:19:05 PM
Hi All,
Time for another Duploworld update.
Virgin ice? you might ask. what is Virgin ice? and why is he writing about it?
Well to tell you the truth it is my own expression, I have no clue if it has a real name. It most likely does, I just do not know it.
I called it Virgin Ice because it is ice taking its first and only trip to the sea and my first time experienceing it.
The what:[/b]
It is common knowledge, at last up here, that ice breaks of the Glaciers from the Ice Cap into the fiords. The largest pieces are know as Icebergs and can be truly huge in size, large enough wreak a Bulk carrier without noticing it.
The glaciers near Nuuk are not large enough to produce icebergs, they produce something called "isskosser" my best translation would be "ice flakes". It is flakes of ice breaking of the glaciers, normally cluttering up in the bottom of the fiords. In rare incidents, during heavy storms from a certain direction combined with the right water currents will make them float towards sea filling the fiords with these white and blueish flakes. as it is during storm a huge part of these will be blown on shore creating a dream like landscape.
The why:[/b]
On the night between Tuesday and Wednesday a heavy storm raged the fiords and the water currents were apparently right during Wednesday as well, because as I started walking towards Home I saw this rather alien and to me all new kind of landscape. I just had to go there, even if it mean a climb on some where wet and steep rocks that by my standards were a pretty dangerous trip the first photo in this post literally almost ended with broken bones in stead of a picture.
I did plan the walk home but I did surely not plan to spend 2 hours in this, to me, magic land of ice flakes and rocks.
The characteristics:[/b]
First thing to notise is that they may look innocent in size on a distance, but again the magnitude of nature up here does often deceive. An elder Greenlandic photo enthusiast I met down there by accident allowed me to take this picture to show off the size of these ice flakes and this particular ice flake were about a middle sized one, they were there in sizes from that of a small house and down to something like a bowling ball.
Size is not the only thing that differed, colours density and shapes were changing as well and I did not find two that looked alike, below is a few samples from the all new photo album called "Virgin Ice"
A few examples:[/b]
These are a few more of the pictures from the "Virgin Ice album".
Pictures are as usual clickable for a larger view. That goes for all the pictures in this post.
I hope you will spend the time to go through the album it were an amazing experience for me and I hope the photos will bring that experience to you as well.

That is all for today.
Take good care.
Thomas

Nice to have you back here:)
Thank you for that fine compliment, which is greatly appreciated.
Our bars are rather dull on the outside and extremely dark on the inside, but I will bring a picture of the outside soon and try if I can get one from the inside too.
Take care:)
