Aurora Borealis
Wednesday, November 15, 2006 3:25:20 AM
Hi All,
A brief duploworld update.
I received two guests at work today, one from the US and one from Australia. They asked me if they would be able to see the aurora borealis while they were here and it is indeed a common sight.
I told them that the high sun we have had to day would mean a fair chance to spot it tonight.
It seems i were right as this sight greeted me at my balcony when I returned from the Gym tonight.
Talking about a balcony with a view... I love the Greenlandic winter.
Take care:)
Thomas

(I am referring to the Northern Lights, they resemble flying dragons to me!)

I really miss the 'Northern Lights'. Used to see them often when I lived in the Scottish Highlands

I have been told that that happens here too, sometimes, I have never actually seen one yet, though.
Up in the crater area...

I have spent more than a couple of nights chasing around the countryside trying to catch them, unsuccessfully I might add.
Lovely shot:up:

Nordlys as it is called in danish, is very common up here too... I will chace it some more this weekend I think.
Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo # Thursday, November 16, 2006 2:41:41 AM
It really is an addictive sight... I love just to stand in the silent darkness and watch it float over the sky...

In England, Wales and in Massachusetts and Rhode Island in the winter...
Here, in the Azores, about six years ago, we nearly had a freak snow storm, but it just hailed a lot and it covered the island in white and it was sooooooooooo bloody cold! I had the fireplace roaring, gas heaters going, anything to get warm! It never got that cold here before!

I've only ever seen them from a plane and it wasn't the best view. Hmmm...the stars - tail of the Great Bear - or is the head? - I suppose?

Just had an AUstralian visiting... he were pretty surpriced when they arrived in Kangerlussuaq (our international hub in minus 20 degrees.
I can imagine you would be feeling kind of the same...
I mean I felt almost the same when first arriving up here:)

No Aurora Berealis is definitely best viewed from the ground and preferably a dark place where you do not have distracting light sources.
It does get very powerfull up here and season has just begun:)
Yesterday walking home from dinner were even more amazing Tuesday, but I had no camera with me (it were a business dinner)
You are right, Air polution is not really an issue up here:D
Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo # Friday, November 17, 2006 12:29:01 PM

Well it actually does.. or well not anymore... he has a new one on I think...
Thank you for the compliments... season only started for aurora Borealis up here... only downside is that it is so darn cold shooting it... doing photoshoots in -16 degrees is a rather cold experience.... did that today...
Will post another shot in a moment.
Take care:)
