Aurora Borealis

, , ,

Hi All,

A brief duploworld update.

I received two guests at work today, one from the US and one from Australia. They asked me if they would be able to see the aurora borealis while they were here and it is indeed a common sight.
I told them that the high sun we have had to day would mean a fair chance to spot it tonight.

It seems i were right as this sight greeted me at my balcony when I returned from the Gym tonight.

Talking about a balcony with a view... I love the Greenlandic winter.

Take care:)

Thank you Louis:)

Heavenly father we ask you to bless our camera, our tripod and our cable release:D:D

You really are lucky. I used to see them all the time where I used to live, (which isn't that far north) but they were always white, never coloured.

Like dragons in the sky! I saw them once over Lake Michigan, believe it!

(I am referring to the Northern Lights, they resemble flying dragons to me!)

Where I grew up in Norway, you can see "norlys" every now and then. It is a magnificent view.

Wakajawaka Wednesday, November 15, 2006 8:44:32 AM

Beautiful pic D!!

I really miss the 'Northern Lights'. Used to see them often when I lived in the Scottish Highlands

That is SOOOOOO cool!

I have been told that that happens here too, sometimes, I have never actually seen one yet, though. sad

Up in the crater area...

You lucky man!!
I have spent more than a couple of nights chasing around the countryside trying to catch them, unsuccessfully I might add.

Lovely shot:up:

Hi Sandy,

Thank you, It sure gives for some amazing views. it is actually green up here.

They are very common here, Greenland is appearently one of the best place in the world to spot it.

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 16, 2006 2:39:25 AM

Hi momable,

It is amazing to see this bright green coloured light moving across the sky...

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 16, 2006 2:40:33 AM

Hi Misund,

Nordlys as it is called in danish, is very common up here too... I will chace it some more this weekend I think.

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 16, 2006 2:41:41 AM

Thank you Waka:)

It really is an addictive sight... I love just to stand in the silent darkness and watch it float over the sky...

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 16, 2006 2:42:43 AM

Thank you:)

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 16, 2006 11:13:02 AM

Hi Wicked... I am usually dressed like an eskimo when during winter... I am not exactly a big fan of cold weather or used not to be... I have to admit that it can be amazing when it is really cold outside (-35 to -40 degrees)... Cold but Amazing.

Give it a go some day:)

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsıwickedlizard Thursday, November 16, 2006 11:22:36 AM

Never been that cold! The coldest I have ever been was at just at "let´s snow a little"... p

In England, Wales and in Massachusetts and Rhode Island in the winter...

Here, in the Azores, about six years ago, we nearly had a freak snow storm, but it just hailed a lot and it covered the island in white and it was sooooooooooo bloody cold! I had the fireplace roaring, gas heaters going, anything to get warm! It never got that cold here before! lol

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsıwickedlizard Thursday, November 16, 2006 11:24:36 AM

Having grown up in California doesn´t help either! p When I first came to livehere, I was cold cold cold in the winter, as the winter is way colder than in California! I looked like an eskimo then! lol Got used to the winters here since!

beavidal Thursday, November 16, 2006 12:58:38 PM

I cant imagine how is watch the aurora happening! I saw only on the TV but I know it's not the same...

Adele BrandSittingFox Thursday, November 16, 2006 7:15:31 PM

Duplo - amazing bigsmile bigsmile

I've only ever seen them from a plane and it wasn't the best view. Hmmm...the stars - tail of the Great Bear - or is the head? - I suppose? wink Guess you never have to worry about light pollution spoiling the view, either bigsmile

hungryghost Friday, November 17, 2006 5:47:55 AM

OH WOW!

I'm so jealous. Have always wanted to see the NOrthern LIghts!!

But this is almost as good - thanks for shaing the picture bigsmile

HI Wicked...

Just had an AUstralian visiting... he were pretty surpriced when they arrived in Kangerlussuaq (our international hub in minus 20 degrees.

I can imagine you would be feeling kind of the same...

I mean I felt almost the same when first arriving up here:)

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Friday, November 17, 2006 12:26:41 PM

Hi Sitting Fox,

No Aurora Berealis is definitely best viewed from the ground and preferably a dark place where you do not have distracting light sources.
It does get very powerfull up here and season has just begun:)
Yesterday walking home from dinner were even more amazing Tuesday, but I had no camera with me (it were a business dinner)sad

You are right, Air polution is not really an issue up here:D

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Friday, November 17, 2006 12:29:01 PM

Hirohirokichi_uk Saturday, November 18, 2006 6:54:58 PM

Wow! bigeyes It looks like Louis's profile picture.
I heard of aurora before, but I had never seen the pictures. Thanks for sharing, Thomas!

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Sunday, November 19, 2006 4:01:50 AM

Hi Hirokichi,

Well it actually does.. or well not anymore... he has a new one on I think...

Thank you for the compliments... season only started for aurora Borealis up here... only downside is that it is so darn cold shooting it... doing photoshoots in -16 degrees is a rather cold experience.... did that today...

Will post another shot in a moment.

Take care:)
