Duplo's blog

- Just another blog on the internet -

So many things to tell...

, , , , ,

Hi All,

Time for another update from Duploworld. And I have lots to tell, including the opportunity to show you a whole new view of Greenland. But on with the updates.

The Amsterdam and Copenhagen album has been updated with 5 new pictures all taken at "Amager Strandpark" a newly build beacharea in Copenhagen. A beautiful place full of "Simplicity" and "Love"

It has been great to come back to Greenland, mostly because I have missed the nature and amazing scenic landscapes that Greenland is so full of.
And those landscapes are what the rest of this post is all about, because as I got home, i was greeted by two new "babies"
I give you the Pentax DA 14mm and DA 21mm Limited primes:

Well is that so special you might ask, well it is because they are a lot wider than what i otherwise own and that has made for a whole new perspective on things and has in a way reopened my eyes to the fantastic surroundings we have up here:)
Also they have brought me a lot closer to getting high quality primes covering my most used focal lengths, only two to go, but they are unfortunately rather pricey too. As they belongs to a limited serie of lenses, made to meet the standard of the world finest lenses.
But that is merely technial ramblings and really the most important thing is that they are tools used to challenge and express my creativity, as well as enjoy it more.

Over the last few days I have:

"Visited an ancient Greenlandic home"

"Seen a frozen world"

"Even seen a man made landscape"

Well I hope you liked these "new views" on Nuuk, because like it or not I am going to bring you more of them:D
Mroe of them can be found in the "Greenlandic Winter Pictures" album

What else to tell, well another trip to Copenhagen has been called upon me, I am leaving for Copenhagen again end March.
Ohh, and according to the forecasts snow are going to return to Nuuk this weekend and we really lacks snow more than ever... we just have enought to keep the slopes open.

That is it for now all.

Do take care:)

Thomas

Copenhagen - The end - for now that is:)Another set of new views.

Welcome home for however short it may be.
your lens addiction is still in full flight I see, cool new tools. You`ll soon need a little wheelbarrow to carry around all your gear if you keep this up:D

Nice shots:up:

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Friday, March 9, 2007 4:59:04 PM

Hi Richard,

thanks for the welcome and for liking my shots, I appreciate that a lot:)

Well, I would not call it a lens addiction. what I have realised is that I prefer working with prime lenses... What I am in the process of doing is replacing my most used zoom with primes. I know have a 14mm, 21mm, 50mm and 105mm prime, the latter a macro.
What I lack is a 35mm (which is on the way:D) and a 70mm, then maybe a 135mm prime too, but then I am covered for the kind of photography I prefer doing.
Only downside is cost... a single prime is cheaper than a zoom, but primes covering the same focal range as a zoom is unfortunately not:(
Actually they fits perfectly in my travel bag, so far that is.

Allanricewood Friday, March 9, 2007 6:20:50 PM

Yeah! Wide angle lenses rock!!

The photo of the Greenlandic ancient home wouldn´t have had the same sense of perspective with any other lens. I use wideangles a lot, too - for that particular reason.

This will ad significantly to your photographic eye I am sure.

Gongrats, and well done!

Adele BrandSittingFox Friday, March 9, 2007 7:49:37 PM

Very nice shots, the frozen water looks suitably vast up

I don't see anything wrong with collecting lenses whistle though I'm only in the process of buying my fourth one! smile

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Friday, March 9, 2007 9:39:16 PM

HI Allan,

Thank you, I am very glad that you like it.

I have had these lenses on my wishlist for quite some time now.
Wide angle is surely something unique and it has indeed opened up a whole new perspective for me.

Thanks again.

Thomas

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Friday, March 9, 2007 9:50:29 PM

Hi there SittingFox,

thannk you.

Well LBA sneaking up on you too?

Well I think I am on my lens number 8 and have number 9 on the way and I am looking out for that number 10 sometime soon, then my sigma 17-70 will be put on retirement.

Adele BrandSittingFox Friday, March 9, 2007 10:06:29 PM

Hi Thomas,

I'm trying to get hold of Tamron's 200-500mm lens for Canon EOS (I know prime lenses are better but I need big telephoto because of my targets - typically shy wild mammals - and there's no way I can afford a prime with 500mm! bigeyes) Currently I have Canon's standard 18-55m, a Sigma 80-300mm, and an adaptor for my spotting scope, which gives me 1700mm but is too heavy to carry about except for special occasions! smile

Ten lenses bigeyes You will end up spoilt for choice, I think! smile

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Friday, March 9, 2007 11:43:53 PM

Well take a look at the all new sigma 200-500 f2.8 then:lol:

Or look out for the "Bigma" I have seen very decent results from that one too.

Spoiled no way... at least two of them are dust collectors nothing more nothing less.
But they are all different and good for different things and has their different "feel" (read: redering, bokeh and pop)smile

I am looking forward to see the results from that Tamron:)

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, March 10, 2007 7:26:39 AM

Wow faint I like my current Sigma lens but for some reason I suspect this big one will be a tad expensive lol

The Tamron is reviewed here - I know some of the specs aren't quite as good but, well, have to be realistic I guess lol

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Saturday, March 10, 2007 11:56:09 PM

I read somewhere that it had an expected list price of USD 10.000 for the US market:faint:lol
Well I guess well have to be that, realistic I mean:D
I have read some good stuf about the tamron, that supports the review you have pointed me to and x

ALLY G.ALLY_G Monday, March 12, 2007 7:29:57 AM

because like it or not I am going to bring you more of them

I don't get tired to look your exceptional photos. happy

and I notice: your photo bag will have the weigh of more than 10kg now, right? bigsmile

Asgeirmisund007 Monday, March 12, 2007 10:47:28 AM

Great images as always yes Wow, you really have invested a lot in equipment lately haven’t you? Have been think of expanding the number of lenses I use myself (1 at the moment), but there are so many other things my heart desires

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Monday, March 12, 2007 4:15:05 PM

Thank you soo much Elke, Highly appreciated:)

Well you are right if I actually would try to carry all my gear at once, but I would never do that.

I typically carry camera 2-3 lenses and a tripod and that is well below 10kg, my guess would be around 6kg. that is down to four if I do not take the tripod. my travelkit would usually be just below 8 (carry on max weight when flying).

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Monday, March 12, 2007 4:41:13 PM

Hi Asgeir,

THank you first of all, I am glad you like my new wide angle photos:)

Well Yep (LBA), but trying to replace my entire zoom range with primes requires that.
I am still at least one short, ideally two. but that is a different story entirely.
I could be blabbering about why and which focal lengths for a loong time, but I will not do so. It is after all only tools:D

Well more lenses will come in due time and you produce great results from the lens you already have:up:

Peter Battypjbatty Wednesday, March 14, 2007 3:33:37 PM

I'll have to post some shots of my Sigma 10-20mm - even wider than your 14! Even my wife was impressed by how much you can squeeze in the frame wink

I'm only on lens #4 at the moment and it'll stay that way until I get a 'real' job. Probably next would be a replacement for my kit lens (18-55mm) at f/2.8 and perhaps Nikon's 70-300 VR or if I'm feeling flush, their 70-200 f/2.8 VR (just over £1000!).

Keep posting your photos!

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Wednesday, March 14, 2007 5:08:15 PM

Hi PJ,

Please do so... Now if they would only make a reclinar 10mm prime, then I would be in heaven. I prefer primes...

WEll thats all I have been doing so far as well, replacing my walkabout zoom:)
but It will take me 6 primes to do so:D

Anytoher lens I truely love is the 50 f1.4 the in body SR makes it handholdable all the way down to 1/2 sec shutterspeed:cool:

Ih ave heard a lot of good stuff about that 70-200 f2.8 VR, but it is a bit expensive and availability should be pretty bad too...

Thanks and remember to post those 10mm shots:)

Peter Battypjbatty Wednesday, March 14, 2007 8:37:07 PM

That's why they put such a price on them, so we can dream! I'm nearly there in compiling my China 2007 stuff, so expect some wide ones too.

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Wednesday, March 14, 2007 9:01:51 PM

I am going to look forward to those, that is for sure...

Well that is the advantage of primes... they are a little cheaper than zoomes... Problem is that you need a lot more of them...

But yeah we can all dream:)

Peter Battypjbatty Wednesday, March 14, 2007 9:07:51 PM

Have a quick look - I posted a pic with you in mind wink

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Wednesday, March 14, 2007 10:02:37 PM

Looks good, very nice work:up:

It really is wide...

Peter Battypjbatty Thursday, March 15, 2007 9:29:39 PM

Damn you with your lens buying! I've been eyeing up the Nikon 24-120mm VR all day now and I really shouldn't buy it, but....

I'm very nearly at the 'what the hell...' stage but I'm hanging in there!

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, March 15, 2007 11:55:45 PM

Sounds like a very nice lens, VR on short focal lengths are a very nice feature for low light photography:) is it a fast one?

Be strong PJ, be strong.

Peter Battypjbatty Friday, March 16, 2007 5:38:05 PM

f/3.5-5.6 I think so not too bad. I was reading some reviews of it and many prefer the 18-200mm VR. That might explain why nobody seems to have any in stock! It's not the sharpest lens but for travelling, what else do you need? VR and 18-200mm focal length (it's designed for the DX sensor in all the Nikon DSLRs) and f3.5-5.6.

Either that or a 35mm prime, since my 50mm f/1.8 shoots like a 80mm.

Might hold on for a while, perhaps Nikon will bring out something new in the autumn.

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Friday, March 16, 2007 7:29:16 PM

Well PJ,

Interesting... I think I would go with the 35mm prime... it would fit well in between the 10-20 and the 50... and most likely be fast than the zooms too and have superior IQ.

I cannot wait to receive my 35mm:D

Peter Battypjbatty Saturday, March 17, 2007 4:18:03 PM

Yeah, I'm thinking that too. I already have a cheap Tamron 55-200mm, which is surprisingly good optically but has slow and noisy AF. Also, the 35mm prime is much cheaper than the 18-200mm zoom (which is nearly £500 and in short supply) so I may splash out soon.

I love my 50mm prime and it's hard to get anything but sharp images from it. Not bad for £100 brand new!

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Sunday, March 18, 2007 9:19:22 PM

Well mine should be arriving any day now, maybe in a couple of days...
The pentax 35 is very similar in feel to the pentax 50, the latter is amazing so I am really looking forward to it.

Anyway good luck with your decision. I am looking forward to hear and see what you ends up with:)

Adele BrandSittingFox Thursday, March 29, 2007 7:26:03 PM

Hi Thomas, I got the Tamron! Well, I bought it from a Californian shop and my brother in law has just brought it back to the UK for me. I'm loving it, my best lens by a mile. First pics here

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, March 29, 2007 8:32:06 PM

Hi Sittingfox,

WOW:eyes:

That is one big lens... and it seems to take good pictures in your hands too.

Congrats:cheers:
