Greenlandic Portraits...

Hi All,
Second duploworld update in a row and this time as promised on Greenlandic Portraits.
If you do not want to read a mix of a bit technical photography stuff combined with a couple of pictures then do not read on.... because that is the main content of this post:D
I have as you may recall recently acquired a Pentax DA21mm Limited prime, a tiny and remarkable optical wonder. When mounted on camera it is just short of 3cm long(with hood) and resonably fast at f3.2. It is crafted in aluminium and build to have the feel of an old manual focus lens. but this is all gear talk. Why is it important, because I want you to understand that it is one little sturdy and tough piece of equipment and just as importantly I am thrilled about this little gem of a lens and the pictures I am able to take with it:D
well the last couple of posts has clearly (at least to me) proven that it fares well doing landscapes, in fact it sits on my camera as my standard lens. This saturday as we did our walk I intented to test how it performed wide open or close to for more environmental portraiture. I took my preferred model (miss Duplo) with me to have someone to appear in the shots.
My aim with the pictures, was to capture some shots of Miss Duplo that incuded a good feel of the surroundings and the Greenlandic environment.
Well know I took a lot of pictures and I am not going to upload them all, but here are four picture from the day, I will leave it for you to judge them, but I like these pictures and this kind of portraits, now what do you think?

Well I think the results are interesting and it was fun doing something different. Set aside these more environmental portraits and landscapes which is great with it, then I think it will do well for street photography too and I have some of that scheduled on saturday. Furthermore it is tack sharp wide open which is a nice thing to know:)
One last thing. Loku has been tagging me and even though I am not going to tag anyone else, here are the first paragraph from page 123 (there is only one on the page),
I am currently rereading the manual to my camera, experimenting with metering settings AE and AL lock/link with mulitsegment metering... kind of geeky I know:D
Thanks for taggin me loku, I appreciate that.
well that is it... I will be back tomorrow with the last WPN update and without the rambling about gear:D:D
Thanks for listening to my ramblings and watching my pictures:)

White balance is a function for adjusting the color of an imageso that white objects appear white. Set the whtite balance if you are not satisfied with the colour balance taken with the white balance set to AWB (auto) or to intentionally apply a creative effect to your images. The default setting is AWB (auto).

Thank you for your kind compliment and for telling me how the photo works on you. Tat is actually quite usefull for me.
I would love to capture that too:) Unfortunately this was a rather windy day, but on a day without wind that should be possible... I will keep the idea in mind.
Thanks again a really usefull comment this one of yours:)

Keep it up and well done to Miss Duplo for being the model. I love how you call her Miss Duplo - makes me smile every time

And I do agree, that number 4 turned out rather good... but that is part of the fun with experiments.
And I still have a lot to learn about shooting people (with a camera, that is)

THanks first of all:)
The miss Duplo is actually not entirely my idea... Richard actually deserves the honour... he came up with the original idea. as faras I know at least.
It is very kind of her to model in my pictures, but as my camera is snapping almost constantly, I guess she has just gotten used to the idea.
The third on is OK, but while the positioning of the horizon adds to the picture, then I would have preferred if I would have been able to lower it a bit... The current position is a bit distracting to me...
Thanks again:)

I have never visited Greenland, but I think that #3 photo suits your purpose best. Portrait and environment together.
I am quite impressed by your new lens regarding sharpness (to the extend it´s possible to tell fram a rather compressed jpeg). But what about barrel distortion? You have placed the horizon close to the middle of the photos in both cases. Had you placed it neat the top, would it be distorted. That´s rather inevitable with extreme wide-angles, isn´t it?
Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo # Thursday, March 22, 2007 10:36:54 PM
I agree with you on that. I just have that nag about the positioning of the horizon in it. But for a test it is about the right working distance, I think.
It is amazingly sharp and I think distorsions is surprisingly well controlled. I expected a lot more distorsion.
In this picture taken with the same lens you get a way better feel of the distorsion, as I have not corected it.
You knwo this already but the huge advantage of primes is that they generally speaking is sharper, more contrasty and suffers a lot less from distorsions. They do often have a better "feel" (bokeh, rendering, etc) too. I prefer them by far, but you loose the zoom flexibility.
So, to answer you question yes it would have been distorted, but only marginally so. It does amazingly well in this department for such a wide angle lens.
Just out of curiosity, are you shooting primes or zooms?
Take care:)

I probably should do that one of these days.

Yep well not end to end. mut as it is highly configurable then it is need at time to understand how a given manufacturer has inplemented certain things.
the whole issue about configuring the relation between focus points, metering system and even AF is something that will decide how the camera calulates the exposure of a given scene. why understanding it is important.
that said for landscapes I still often fins myself using the spot meter and full manual. which is a way of totally bypassing the above settings.
RTFM is an advise, that often saves one from a lot of frustration:D

I dont know if i could cope with all these lenses you have to choose from, the varity it can give you is amazing but I imagine I would miss most of the shots I take just from having to decide what lens to use and fitting it.
Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo # Thursday, March 29, 2007 12:23:28 AM
Well it is a different world compared to the ultrazoom camera type and choices are many, I do not bring all the lenses all the time, they each have their unique strengths. typically I bring 3-5 lenses, selected for the kind of photography I set out to do.
It makes me think a lot more about what I do and why. basically I would be able to cover 90 percent of my photography with one zoom, but I prefer the primes for their more individual character...
I have gotten fairly used to swapping lenses though:D

beautiful photos of a wonderful woman...
anyway my compliments to both and to the photographer.
