Another sign of spring has emerged...

Hi All,
Yep duploworld update time again:)
When I say another sign of spring I am not talking about actual flora peaking through the snow. I am talking about another very certain sign of spring in Greenland.
But more on that later...
Because first of all I have a little creative idea to all of you photo people out there... some of you may know about it already, but some may find this useful...
I have had this little gadget for some time now, it is called an "L-bracket". Now what is such a tiny thingy good for? well if you are not into tripods then it is of little use... but much like a vertical grip for the camera this one is a gadget that helps avoid the annoying "portrait orientation dilemma" when using a tripod.
WE all now that placing the camera on a tipod is easily done when shooting in landscape orientation, camera is centered over the tripod and all:
The problem occurs when we all the sudden want to shoot in portrait orientation, without an L-bracket, this is what happens:
Annoying because the weight is now shifted off the center of the tripod and one has to reposition the tripod to get the same view of things. the off center issue is nonexisting if one uses a sturdy tripod, but the annoyance of having to reposition the entire tripod in height and angle is big to me. Well by adding an L-Bracket, this is what become an option:

Making swich between landscape and portrait orientation an easy thing and even maintaining the same position relative to the subject your a trying to capture:)
I love this little thingy... yes it is a littl expensive and yes it requires and arca swiss compatibe quick-release tripod head, but I would not be without it:)
Kirk and RRS makes them, custom made for a variety of cameras to ensure a perfect fit.
Just thought I would let you all know...
Now, back to the story about another significant sign of spring, it is not the temperature... it is still well below 0C, neither is it lack of snow (it has been snowing all day today:D) not the light either even though it is amazing these days:),
No it is the size of the ice flakes that floats by out in the fiords... just take a look at one of the most recent "Greenlandic Spring Pictures" below:
Now if the picture leaves any doubt, then I can tell you that it was a large piece of ice:) not sure if it makes sense, but bigger iceflakes means spring has arrived...
The weekend has been spend outside, even today where heavy snow has been falling again.. yep hopefully means another few weeks of boarding:D
Lastly I just want to share another picture from saturday night:
That is it, now I will go on reading blogs...
Take care:)
Thomas

But yeah it came out pretty nicely, I actually like the view to it during night time:)

Night shots and a lot of water often seem to be a nice combination - as in your photo here. But I reckon that now you´re experiencing biig ice in that water, the days of night shots are soon history, for some time
That sentence was rubbish - I hope you get my point

Glad to see that I can help you spend money:D No seriously... I think it is a very nice little helper and I know they make it for the D200 too.
That is so true... and thank you for liking it... and yeah that last sentence did not make much sense but I did get the point:D
Take care:)

Some wonderful photos, Thomas. I like the saturday night photo.

Actually it is not a paradox at all.. when temperature rises the glacier melting process speeds up which causes larger Ice flakes to breack off, and at least by Nuuk standards, what you see in the picture is a larger one.
Thank you for the fine compliment:)

How wonderful to have you back here:happy: Thank you for your generous compliment.it is deeply appreciated.
Yes I like to think of Greenland as a beautiful place... just like most other regions in the world... beautiful but different.
Take care:)

Greenland was on the news over here, apparently a new island emerged from the ocean that had never been there before. Expert are saying it's a sign of global warming

It really is a very nice solution for portrait orientation tripod work.
That is news to me and I live here... do you know where? do you have a link?... I thought that global warming was supposed to make oceans rise though:confused: I would expect that to make islands disappear not appear:D

It's funny because you don't have much flora or fauna to look at in Greenland but you have wonderful nature's spectacles like auroras and icebergs to compensate. I guess every part of the world has its equivalent share of beauty.

Always a plasure to have you around. and thank you for the nice compliments, I appreciate them:)

It is indeed a fun thing that each region of the world has its own wonders... we do have lots of fauna though, but it is not easy to capture, but includes a variety of whales, seals, polar bears, snow rabbits, snow foxes, rein deers, musk oxes, and quite a few birds... But none of it is living anywhere near Nuuk... except the Ravens perhaps...
It requires a long trip by boat to get anywhere near them... I think they hada polar bear visiting a fw years back... not really a nice thought:yikes:
Take care:)

Well not much for them to feed from... no flora means more or less no animals...
