And welcome to my humble OC home.
I have only this january received the D3, the majority of the photos posted from it, has been from either the Nikkor 14-24G f2.8 (the most impressive wide angle I have ever seen), Nikkor 70-200G f2.8 VR (excellent zoom) or the Nikkor 50mm f1.4 (decent, but not impressive).
There are a few photos from a Zeiss Distagon T* 28mm f2 (excellent is mildly put I think) in the Copenhagen album as well.
Aside from above my collection also holds a Zeiss Plannar T* 85mm f1.5 (another beauty) and Nikkor AIS 50mm f1.2 is on the way to complete ly manual focus kit.
Before January most of the photos were done with A Pentax K10D and a variety of prime and zoom lenses... ranging from 14mm to 200mm. among my favourites were the Pentax DA14mm f2.4, DA 21mm f3.2 Limited, FA 43mm f1.9 Limited, DA 70mm f2.4 Limited and FA 77mm f1.8 Limited.
Not to mention the Olympus Myu mini that does most of my snowboarding and skiing photos.

It indeed has been a while and thank you so much for the kind compliments.
I sincerely hope you will be able to go north seing the auroras one day, they are worth it.
Our winter has been the strongest since 1983 or so, that is what the locals have said at least... So it has been massive heaps of snow and I have loved every second of it:)
Then again, we usually have lots of snow in the winters, but this year has been extreme.
Speaking of DSLR's I think it is hard to go wrong with any of the newer DSLRs, they all produce darn good photos, the choice comes down to a couple of factors.
1) Ergonomics - go hold them, a camera that feels good in the hand and has a, for you, intuitive control layout will usually be used more often.
2) what is the end product? Web display or prints, maybe both and how large?
If you are below A4 size in general 6MP is more than enough, I have seen fine A3 prints from 6MP too.
Now for a beginners DSL, my shortlist would be, the Nikon D40 (not D40X or D60), Canon Digital rebel XT, Nikon D50 or D70, Pentax K100D or K100D Super.
but shoot me a PM or email if you have more questions on the subject.
I will joump to your blog in a second:)
