Arctic Weekend Cruise - Day 2
Saturday, May 10, 2008 3:40:00 AM
Quite early that Saturday morning the first of the 12 woke up. He slowly made his way to the deck.
And caught the first glimes of a lonly fisherman heading out in the early morning sun, while mist were still covering the fiord:
Heading out
Now sitting up there on the deck several other members of the 12, joined the first on the deck and together they enjoyed the view towards Qoornoq, the destination for the morning hike.
It looked so pretty in the early morning sun and speaks Greenland in a way few other places they had seen before has managed.
Qoornoq
Qoornoq, was once a settlement that housed a fish factory and a small community of fishermen and hunters.
Some time ago the fish factory was closed down and the settlement abandoned.
Today it serves as a summerhouse area with the ruins of the old fish factory to remind people visiting of a time that used to be. Volounteers has slowly restored the old white stone church and it is now a beautiul museum and another mark of what used to be:
The Chruch in Qoornoq
The 12 visited the abandoned fish factory and continued to a small secluded bay area where another certain sign revealed it self. Iceflakes from the glacier hidden awaydeep into the fiord. the 12 was speachless watching the ice flakes in the strong sunlight.
Ice flakes in Qoornoq bay
The 12 returned to the ship and while they enjoyed a fine lunch heavy low hanging clouds blew in and the wind turned stronger.
Clouds and peaks
The trip however continued past a mountain called "Innajuattoq", pretty much a huge cube shaped stone block rising almost vertical 1200 meters above the fiord. The weather however made the views quite unappealing to the 12 and the day ended as they reached a bay area just outside "Timmiannguit" near "Qooqqut"
And this area is where Day 3 was spend
