Duplo's blog

- Just another blog on the internet -

Taking off again and...

, , , , ,

A tiny, tiny rant over a little thing that actually disappointed me quite a lot.

Hi All,

And welcome to a Duploworld update. well only two things to tell really.
First one is just a short message that in not too many hours I will be heading towards Copenhagen again for a few days. Not too eager, but any chance to visit my family should be treasured and it is smile
I still have not gotten all the way around my watchlist and my apologies to those I have not visited for a while. I will however strive to get by shortly to see what you have all been up to.
Mugshot - take #1

Now todays topic is actually examplified perfectly in the photo above.
While a standard mugshot and nothing special per se, it is the outcome of a most disappointing experience.
Miss Duplo is about to complete her drivers license (Yeha I know, a little late in life, but better late than never smile ). A drivers license like any valid ID requires a photo that has to be of a certain standard, whith expalins why it is face forward and all.
She went to the local camera store/photo studio to have her photo taken. Now instead of going through trouble of spending the 5 minutes it would have taken to light up two strobes and spend less than 2 minutes working over the RAW file as I did above. they used a large instant film camera with and a front mounted on camera flash, safe to say that it resulted in a photo that was poor, full of harsh shadows and totally unflattering (I dare say almost anyone would have done better with a disposable camera furious
Miss Duplo was a little sad and felt that the 12 EUR spend on the 30 seconds of poor work was over the top, especially the result considered.
I spend the 5 (ok 10 maybe, i need to unfold the lighstands, mount umbrellas etc.) minutes and she now has a photo for her drivers license that is well above average I would say.
My point with this story is, that if you do own a studio, a camera store even. Why would you not want to deliver an end result satisfactory to both your customer and your self.
That particular store, which will remain unnamed, has lost any future printing or other business from me.
I just find it sad when what should be a professional turns out not to be so.
You may think that I am overreacting on a tiny unimportant matter and In a way I am, but hey 5 minutes would have brought them a happy customer. I guess I just miss the days where those 5 minutes mattered.

Ok enough ranting for one post I think, in stead here is a flower photo to round off the post (I even know the name bigsmile ).
Dandelion - after the rain

Thanks for reading and putting up with my rant smile

Ohh and do take care you all smile

Thomas

Indeed, Thomas. I have thought the same about these passport-photo-shops. But then again I thought that a passport photo isn't about flattering, it's about the facial recognition.

But you're right, of course. If you have a choice between a bit of dedication and sloppiness, why not choose the first?

beavidal Tuesday, July 15, 2008 12:36:26 PM

Congrats to her Thomas!!! I never got mine sad shame on me! But I didnt pass the street exam sad Don't know when I'm gonna try again!
But it's important to any people have a drive license, even if you don't drive too much!
smile

Great stuff, love the details on the flower yes

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Tuesday, July 15, 2008 10:07:38 PM

Hi Allan,
Well this is not just a passport photo store, these guys actually has a full studio used for more serious portraiture as well.
Agree on the bit about facial recognition vs. flattering, but as I am quite aware you know, my point was, why not achieve both smile

starstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstar

Well Bea, she still needs to pass a couple of exams before getting it smile but she had to deliver a photo to the police beforehand.

starstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstar

Thank you Andy happy

Glad you do Asgeir.
Thank you.

Always excellent... I love your photos up
I own a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 - it has RAW capability and I am becoming more experienced as I develop the digital negatives into tiff, But I am a very long way from achieving the quality you display here. My dslr is somewhere in the future, awaiting me as a new owner, by which time I should have enough experience in the 'art' that you practice on a higher level and display here up

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Tuesday, July 15, 2008 11:15:03 PM

Thank you so much Loku happy
Appreciate your kind compliments a lot.

I have seen your photos progress and always enjoyed them.

You are most welcome Loku.

Well, I've heard stories about 'pro' wedding photographers whose EXIF data show that the whole event was shot in 'auto' mode. No playing around with depth of field or shutter speeds at all.

Sometimes it's about what you can (obviously) get away with.

OTOH, those are very nice photos above smile

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Friday, July 18, 2008 1:01:41 AM

too true, even some shooting in jpg, at that... my selfesteem would not be up to anything but RAW and a combination of full manual and aperture priority.
Not that my nerves would be up to even trying to shoot a full wedding smile

Sure enough it is about "what you can get away with" (especially when they are pretty much the only studio in town. But that was my point, I may be fooling myself, but I seem to recall a time where people cared too much about their profession.

Appreciate you liking the photos:happy:
As written above, a fairly standard "mugshot", but yeah I like it too (I am probably a little biased though smile )

mr. and ms. duplo,

i write to you today because i agree with thomas. i provide customer service in my profession -- sometimes it is based on my corporations limitations and policies, but providing quality customer service is rather easy compared to just getting by on a paycheck! imo.

ms. duplo, you are a very beautiful woman and i think you and all customers who pay for a photograph derserve the best. maybe these so-called professions should go back to school and learn their craft!

in the USA, we pay for the staff of the state government to not only take our photo and complete our paperwork, they have to provide the testing facilities and produce the drivers license. every person who passes the exams (both written and physical, i.e.; driving test) is then ask to pay an additional fee to get their paperwork process and an official license issue (produced). it is a common joke that if a person thinks they look bad today, just get out their drivers license and look at it. they always look worse in that photo!

adults usually have between seven and ten years between license renewals. you should see my photo, it is so old and my nose and eyes still look the same. my hair, glasses, and wrinkles have grown out of that younger photo -- i think i'm up for renewal in 2010. ha, ha -- wonder how i'll look then?

sincerely, deborah.

Hi Deborah,

I would say we agree completely.

Thanks for explaining the drivers license policy in the US, quite different from the one in Denmark, my drivers license is up for reneval in 2050:)
SO in Denmark you have quite a lot of people actually looking quite different from their drivers license:)

I will pass on your generous compliment to Miss Duplo.

Thank you Deborah.

Thomas

Yes, I'd be a raw shooter also, with a bias towards manual or aperture priority. A wedding is something I'd like to try to do. I haven't done one yet, but I'd like to see how well I could do.

Fortunately my brother has 3 daughters. And my sister-in-law has extracted a promise out of me to be their wedding photographer... smile

Seems like we agree on that setup smile
I am sure you would do pretty good at a wedding up

That sounds good smile guess you better start practise quick lighting setups on the go already bigsmile
Well I have the odd feeling that I am going to run into a couple of weddings down the line as well, luckily none of them are just around the corner and I plan to go "second" on one or two before that time comes.

deborah1bluebox Monday, July 21, 2008 10:56:15 PM

just remember people, the wedding photographer doesn't get to enjoy the party (wedding) until after it is over and done with. i wouldn't recommend being the 'photographer' at a family event, unless you plan on ignoring your family and friends. that's my opinion, my friend missed out on an important event because he was so damned good at his profession.

hungryghost Tuesday, July 22, 2008 9:09:42 PM

More travelling? Oh my. You never stand still do you...

and that's the best way of dealing with business that don't meet your standards...never go back if you can help it.

Sprogger McSprogsprogger Tuesday, July 22, 2008 11:38:48 PM

Wonderful work as always Duplo, tried my hand at some passport sized shots recently. Vastly different subject in mine though wink

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Wednesday, July 23, 2008 3:49:20 AM

Thanks for reminding Deborah smile
I was not talking about family on my part though smile
As you say you are not going to be part of the event and no way I would want to miss out on a future wedding including my brother or sister, because I was stuck behind a camera.

starstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstar

Well Mr. Hungry I do try actually, but I have always had a hard time sitting still for too long bigsmile
Agree completely on the business thing too, what I experience could be compared to you being talked into buying a bad pair of running shoes buy a sales guy, I guess bigsmile

starstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstarstar

Thank you Richard happy
I have to check your blog out in a moment then.

Uncle MickMickeyjoe-Irl Tuesday, July 29, 2008 6:03:42 PM

I alwyas thought that was in the regulations wink

Valid passport photos must make the subject look dire.

Now that I see what can be done I'm going to insist on more flattering shots for mine.

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Friday, August 1, 2008 3:41:26 AM

lol
I think you are right Mickey J... but I have always been good at bending rules bigsmile

It's been ages since I visited your blog. o Sorry! I have just spent a good half an hour back tracking.
Your girlfriend's photo is really good! I just had to stop my back tracking to say so! bigsmile I totally agree with you on the so called studios who take the crappiest photos of people for the public to see and it isn't exactly cheap either. irked

Luckily, we have a photographer who does take a bit more care with his photos... unfortunately, it's mostly his assistant that does that kind of work as he's so good, he's busy doing other types of photography elsewhere. I always end up looking like a zombie! scared They use such a harsh light, it literally makes my skin look bluish!

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Tuesday, November 18, 2008 3:46:53 AM

It is indeed great to have you back wicked up
Thanks for liking the photo of Miss Duplo happy
I think it is a decent photo of her.

I am also very happy to hear that you have a good studio where you live, it is something to appreciate.
I hope the assistant catches up down the line, Looking bluish is definitely not good.
I actually used a relatively hard light in the photo above, but I agree soft light is generally preferable.
