A balcony view (yep more Aurora borealis)

, , , ,

HI All,

A brief one from Duplo world.
I had the most amazing view from my balcony when I got home from the gym this evening.
Why not capture it and share it with you all:

A short while later it grew even stronger over the ridge:

I really love the winter for these amazing views alone:)

Take care you all:)

Thomas

Oh guess this will be a lengthy one...Argh... soo busy....

Seriously cool. The second one in particular looks amazing

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 2:53:06 AM

Thank you Richard:)

How were i ever able to live wihout a tripod and a wired remote:D

Sprogger McSprogsprogger Thursday, November 23, 2006 2:56:30 AM

exactly up
No cable release for my camera, I use the auto timer- 2 secs

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 3:03:02 AM

It works great too:yes:
have only play tested it yet, but bulb mode is all the sudden useful with a cable remote...

Sprogger McSprogsprogger Thursday, November 23, 2006 3:11:15 AM

Bulb mode- is that the one that lets you hold the shutter open as long as you want.
Handy

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 3:17:04 AM

Yep it is... the trick with the wired remote is that it has an button lock function, where I can lock the butten when pressed and shutter open, let go of the remote, go smoke a cigarette and come back and release the lock and and close the shuttter.

that is a neat feature I think... have not had a real need for it yet, but I might will at some point... something to experiment with anyway.

Sprogger McSprogsprogger Thursday, November 23, 2006 3:23:56 AM

You could get one of those cool long exposures of the stars, where you can see the circular motion of them throught the sky. especialy good since you are so far north:D

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 3:44:01 AM

I have to think of that... just got to find a view where the aurora will not be in the way:D:D

Spectacular photos D.!!!

There are certain people who take certain substances hoping to see visions like that smilesmile

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsıwickedlizard Thursday, November 23, 2006 10:13:15 AM

that is amazing! are they always green there??? I wonder what causes those green colors...

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 11:30:00 AM

HI Waka,

Thank you:)

Yep, that is so true:) I were about to check if my coffee were alright when I saw this the first time up here:D:D

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 11:33:51 AM

Thanks Wicked:)

Auroras are usually green, but as I recall from last year colours will be changing over the season.

I have no clue as to what actually causes it to be green or to appear in the first place:)

I just enjoy the view:D

cool! i´ll have a search on the internet and see if there is any reason for the colors!

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 1:38:10 PM

Thanks Waka:)

Wikipedia is soo nice to have:)

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 1:39:39 PM

Hi Wicked,

Great:)

Let me know if you find anything...

Allanricewood Thursday, November 23, 2006 7:09:07 PM

Very exquisite!

I like the first one better. I find the juxtaposition between the smooth curves of the light and the squares of the town.

The colours are magnificent.

Good job.

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 9:32:38 PM

Hi Allan,

Thank you,

I am glad you like that first picture, because when originally writing the post (before hitting save) it were the only one there.
I decided to post the second one to show powerful it got.

It really is a whole new challenge doing shots when it is dark. But hey a new set of rules to learn. I like that about photography, every aspect of it holds its own lessons to work on and each leasson evolving as experience grows.

Thanks again Alan.

you are welcome and interesting stuff... sort of takes the magic away... p

Eliane a/k/a Ellymomable Thursday, November 23, 2006 10:44:11 PM

I really can't say which photo I like the best. They are both utterly wonderful. I look forward to seeing more.

Do you have polar bears there? It would be super cool if you could get a shot of a polar bear in the foreground of the Northern Lights! Just imagine it...

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 10:44:27 PM

Not really, at least not when you see it for real...

It does look magic, I mean if it is plasma energy or a guy with a huge green flashlight, does not really make a difference when you see it float acros the sky at night:D

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 10:56:49 PM

Hi Momable,

thank you:)

well I live pretty fra from where polar bears normally are seen, but I does happen that they gets lost on the ice cap and by accidence comes by. creates a fair amount of panic. though it has not happen in my time up here.

The idea is great:yes:, but:
While it would make a beautiful picture, then bear in mind that these cute bears tend to be agreesive and will consider you an afternoon snack.
They are faster than you on ground (top speed of 60 km/h), they are far better climbers and they are way faster in water. ohh and their paw is about the size the head of an average person.

People up here has a lot more respect for those animals than I expected when arriving here.

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsıwickedlizard Thursday, November 23, 2006 11:05:21 PM

up bigsmile

Eliane a/k/a Ellymomable Thursday, November 23, 2006 11:07:24 PM

Didn't realize they are so aggressive in Greenland! In Alaska they rummage through the garbage bins!

I wasn't suggesting that you get close to them or any wild animal, however -- you got those superduper lenses, right?

I was just imagining it and thought I would share my musings...

ALLY G.ALLY_G Thursday, November 23, 2006 11:36:19 PM

bigeyes Wow, that looks wonderful, especially the second one.
Great photos, Thomas. Thank you for that! happy

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Thursday, November 23, 2006 11:42:19 PM

Well up here they are treated with a great deal of respect.

I know and I did not mean to bash you in any way, my apology if it came out like that...
Personally I would love to be able to shoot pictures of polar bears or any other wild animal:)

Though I do have decent lenses, but nothing with a range anywhere near long enough to attempt suff like that:(

Well you do not have to suggest that I get close to wild animals:D
I once walked into a tigers cage volounterely and yep there were a full grown tiger in it...

I appreciate you musings, so again my apologies if it came out harsh.

Take care:)

Louisvolkuro Friday, November 24, 2006 3:41:26 AM

Peter Battypjbatty Saturday, December 9, 2006 5:26:50 PM

Hey, just wandered onto your blog again. Lovely photos - did you have to do much adjustment for the exposures or did they come out ok?

I've seen photos of the same thing from Scotland so I'll have to try next time I'm up a bit further north - must be a wonderful thing to watch.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Sunday, December 10, 2006 12:12:03 AM

Hi Pj,

Welcome back, a pleasure having you here again:)
And thanks for the nice compliments.

Well the metering in the camera is pretty precise, but it is a fully manual process when shooting those shots, at least for me.
I have gotten a fell for how strong they are and how the camera must be dialed in, but the first shots were a learning process.
The two in this post are my latest aurora shots and were captured in the first attempt.

Auroras are amazing, I hope you find some of them:)

Take care and thanks for stopping by.

pomdla Friday, December 15, 2006 8:01:44 PM

Hey Thomas! Those are totally awesome shots, I have yet to see the Northern Lights here in Canada, I think I need to go further north. The view in Greenland looks spectacular!

Thomas Bojer EltorpDuplo Friday, December 15, 2006 8:05:56 PM

Hi Pomdla,

Thank you:) I think you has to be pretty far North to see the Auroras. They are decent enough here but Kangerlussuaq a bit further North has a reputation of being the best place in the world for them.

Thanks for stopping by:)
