Well it is time again

, , , ...

Both for another Duploworld update (long overdue some would say:)) and to head off on another brief travel adventure...

Hi all:)

Well gues the major news is up there in line one already:)
On friday I will head off to Copenhagen again, for a little less than a week.
it will mainly be work stuff, as in countless meeeting on this and that, sneak in a mini conference and we are about there... but I guess I will get a chance to squeeze off a few photos while I am at it too, so you just got to wait and see:)

Winter bay

What I have left of spare time these days is spend outside, primarily with a camera attached to my eye and hand, but I do get some boarding time too:D
Now winter this year has been nothing short of amazing and when I say amazing, I mean amazingly winterly.
Unlike in Denmark where winter has been more or less absent, then up here we have had the hardest winter in more than 20 years.

Winter Kayaks

now how bad can it be you might ask?
Well, if we look at it in short oneliners:
- Disco bay has frozen over this winter
- Kangerussuaq has been at its coldest in over 20 years below -50C
- Maniitsoq have had visits from Polar bears
- The fiords around Nuuk has been steaming
- The fiords around Nuuk has even been partly frozen over, which the strong currents normally prevents.
- Nuuk have had prolong periods with well below -20C, several days in the -30C area
snowdunes

Now is that bad, well no it is not:) it means heaps of snow, which again means a lot of usage for snowshoes, snowboard and other outdoor accessories... something I really do enjoy:happy:
Sure one has to be close to nuts, to sit down somewhere way out in the lonely landscape, with a termo of hot coffee, to enjoy a sunset in solitude. Especially when the thermometer reads -29C (the icebow easily made up for it though;)).
But the truth is that I actually love it:happy:
Inuksuits

Well I think that is it for now, there is naturally a bounch of photos in the "Greenlandic Winter Photos" album, so go check it out:)
By the way, I have sorted it by date in a descending order, to make it easier to spot the latest additions (I will then a little int othe spring season cut it down till about 20 photos...
Yes I really do have an issue with the 300 MB limit Opera has - Please opera, can I get or even buy some more? and now that we are at it... The ability to move photos between albums would help a great deal too.
Sermitsiak

as said that is it for now... do take care you all:)

Low tide winter

, , , ...

would be a most suiteable tittle I think...

Hi All,

And welcome to a delayed, but winterly Duploworld update:)

A suitable tittle for the photo below.

Low Tide winter

The photo is from a walk Sunday afternoon, during the later hours of daylight, which by all means is something we do not have a lot of... that however is compensated, by a fair amount of snow, delightfully chilly weather and more snow falling today:) slopes are close to be ready for opening on nothing but real snow:D

There is 8 additional photos in the now updated "Greenlandic Winter Photos 2007" album.
Go take a look:)

Now I do need to apologize to all of you for not reading up on your blogs, but work is tough these days, a little tougher than I like it to be. But well, we cannot have it all can we:)

Now that is it for now a brief update just to let you know that I am alive and well.
Now back to a HUUUGE watchlist.

Do take care and thanks for stopping by:)

Greenlandic Portraits...

, , , ...

Hi All,

Second duploworld update in a row and this time as promised on Greenlandic Portraits.
If you do not want to read a mix of a bit technical photography stuff combined with a couple of pictures then do not read on.... because that is the main content of this post:D

I have as you may recall recently acquired a Pentax DA21mm Limited prime, a tiny and remarkable optical wonder. When mounted on camera it is just short of 3cm long(with hood) and resonably fast at f3.2. It is crafted in aluminium and build to have the feel of an old manual focus lens. but this is all gear talk. Why is it important, because I want you to understand that it is one little sturdy and tough piece of equipment and just as importantly I am thrilled about this little gem of a lens and the pictures I am able to take with it:D
well the last couple of posts has clearly (at least to me) proven that it fares well doing landscapes, in fact it sits on my camera as my standard lens. This saturday as we did our walk I intented to test how it performed wide open or close to for more environmental portraiture. I took my preferred model (miss Duplo) with me to have someone to appear in the shots.

My aim with the pictures, was to capture some shots of Miss Duplo that incuded a good feel of the surroundings and the Greenlandic environment.

Well know I took a lot of pictures and I am not going to upload them all, but here are four picture from the day, I will leave it for you to judge them, but I like these pictures and this kind of portraits, now what do you think?

Picture 1:

Picture 2:

Picture 3:

Picture 4:

Well I think the results are interesting and it was fun doing something different. Set aside these more environmental portraits and landscapes which is great with it, then I think it will do well for street photography too and I have some of that scheduled on saturday. Furthermore it is tack sharp wide open which is a nice thing to know:)

One last thing. Loku has been tagging me and even though I am not going to tag anyone else, here are the first paragraph from page 123 (there is only one on the page),

White balance is a function for adjusting the color of an imageso that white objects appear white. Set the whtite balance if you are not satisfied with the colour balance taken with the white balance set to AWB (auto) or to intentionally apply a creative effect to your images. The default setting is AWB (auto).

I am currently rereading the manual to my camera, experimenting with metering settings AE and AL lock/link with mulitsegment metering... kind of geeky I know:D
Thanks for taggin me loku, I appreciate that.

well that is it... I will be back tomorrow with the last WPN update and without the rambling about gear:D:D
Thanks for listening to my ramblings and watching my pictures:)

I have made a decision...

, , , ...

Hi All,

Antoher Duploworld update for you all to read:)

As you know already and seen from the teaser there have been a lot of winter lately. and cold weather a blizzard has been raging more or less since friday and it is still here. winds peaking out just short of 200 km/h:eyes:
Well I have expereinced being thrown off my feet a few times but only one really scary experience. I was on my wait to the supermarket yesterday just as I reached teh top of a ridge wind grabbed me an litteraly threw me 60 meters back, slamming into our shed wall the first 15-20 meters I had no contact with the ground at all:yikes: that was actually rather scary... but I did not get anything but a little shocked, so it is kind of OK...
Temperature is pretty low too, here is a picture of our thermometer taken early afternoon saturday, did I hear anyone say spring?

anyway sunday afternoon we had a few hours of only light snow and not too heavy wind, we grabbed the chance and did a long walk.
To honour "this hungry Canadian" I talked Miss Duplo into doing this:

To settle the winner in the snowangel competion, we took up a nice little snowball fight... well guess who won it:D

Spirng is soo much fun up here:D:D:D

The decision I have taken is that I will end off my "Greenlandic Winter Pictures" gallery on friday, I am the last one running after my "snow mate" has stopped his album today. and as I am going to Copenhagen it will be a nice clean break. I will however not promise that my first spring pictures will be all snow free:D:D

You have already seen pictures from this saturday in "This post", we had a few hours with somewhat decent weather and I did some, in my opinion, rather interesting "portraits" too. Those will be shared tomorrow and on thursday I will post my remaining winter pictures. so there will be lots of news from Duploworld over the next few days:)

But I think I will end todays post with this picture from the sunday walk (it is a lake actually):

More news tomorrow, take care you all:)

3 simple pictures

, , , ...

HI All,

Not much of a Duploworld update... 3 titled pictures.

Icicles on a rail...

Coffee break or just freezing?

The old Harbour in Nuuk

Take good care you all:)

Hmm... and they call it spring?

, , , ...

Hi All,

I am back with another update from Duploworld and the title really says a lot about what this post is going to be all about, the spring or lack of same:D

I do however have a few surprise announcements hidden here too, so do not go away.

Lets start of with one of the surprise announcements. I have decied to post a little larger pictures and they will in the future have a "watermark" in them too.
As always ask before using them anywhere else:) I know most you would never do, but we all know it happens every now and then...
Anyway let me know what you think about it, one of the pictures in this post is shown full size just to examplify it.

Now back to weather, I mentioned in a comment to allans blog that things were out of the ordinary, weather wise.
It turned out that I was wrong because yesterday morning this view greeted me from the kitchen window:

One might say that things just returned to Normal. A blizzard came by and guess what it has not ended yet. weather forecast even predicts that it will nto peak until like monday:eyes:
Temperatures has dropped too a speady 10-15C below.
Well I went to work, thinking that it would be a silent day, but to my surprise things looked like a regular flying day:eyes:
Passengers boarding one of our more or less snowcovered Dash 7's:

A Sikorsky S61 drinking fuel (posted in full size to let you see the new size I have decided to post in):

I am continiously surprised by the weatherconditions we are able to operate in and remember these pictures was taken outside, so no windows in between...

These, and the following two pictures taken on my way home, makes me wonder if I at all will be able to join the SPN or if I have jump directly to SumPN:confused:
two more taken on my way home:

DId I hear anyone talking about spring? anyway it is good for the slopes, why I am really not complaining at all:D:D

Well and finally the big surprise announcement......

ready?..........

I have been invited to display my pictures in The official Pentax Photo Gallery:eyes:
I am really honoured and very hapy about it, being invited to join photographers as experienced as some of the people in there, is really a big honour to me. the site is currently in beta, but check back every now and then, some of the pictures posted there (not by me) is downright breathtaking:up:
Only nag is that only pictures taken with all pentac gear is allowed, which limits the pictures I am able to submit. But the only non pentac lens staying in my collection is a macro, so over time it will even out.
So far 9 pictures has been approved to the galleries.
Thanks Ned and John, I appreciate it greatly:yes:

Well that is it:)

Have a wonderfull weekend all and do take care:)

Thomas

Another set of new views.

, , , ...

Hi All,

Yep another Duploworld update rolling in:)
And there is no new lenses in this one;) but pictures in stead and a single question.

Now well for the pictures. All taken this Saturday, during my five hours walk to another frozen paradise, a melting water river located at the outskirts of Nuuk. It was a pretty dangerous walk as everything including the places I wre to walk wascovered in a thick carpet of sheer ice. But enoguh blabbering here they are:
Frozen river - part I:

Frozen river - part II:

A distant Harbour view:

Nuussuaq by night:

Now for the main question of this post it is a simple...
Why?

I live in place where nature is as stricking as anything I have ever come acroos, Why it so hard to respect it? care for it? do we have to destroy it?

Well no more ranting from me, do take care you all:)

Thomas

So many things to tell...

, , , ...

Hi All,

Time for another update from Duploworld. And I have lots to tell, including the opportunity to show you a whole new view of Greenland. But on with the updates.

The Amsterdam and Copenhagen album has been updated with 5 new pictures all taken at "Amager Strandpark" a newly build beacharea in Copenhagen. A beautiful place full of "Simplicity" and "Love"

It has been great to come back to Greenland, mostly because I have missed the nature and amazing scenic landscapes that Greenland is so full of.
And those landscapes are what the rest of this post is all about, because as I got home, i was greeted by two new "babies"
I give you the Pentax DA 14mm and DA 21mm Limited primes:

Well is that so special you might ask, well it is because they are a lot wider than what i otherwise own and that has made for a whole new perspective on things and has in a way reopened my eyes to the fantastic surroundings we have up here:)
Also they have brought me a lot closer to getting high quality primes covering my most used focal lengths, only two to go, but they are unfortunately rather pricey too. As they belongs to a limited serie of lenses, made to meet the standard of the world finest lenses.
But that is merely technial ramblings and really the most important thing is that they are tools used to challenge and express my creativity, as well as enjoy it more.

Over the last few days I have:

"Visited an ancient Greenlandic home"

"Seen a frozen world"

"Even seen a man made landscape"

Well I hope you liked these "new views" on Nuuk, because like it or not I am going to bring you more of them:D
Mroe of them can be found in the "Greenlandic Winter Pictures" album

What else to tell, well another trip to Copenhagen has been called upon me, I am leaving for Copenhagen again end March.
Ohh, and according to the forecasts snow are going to return to Nuuk this weekend and we really lacks snow more than ever... we just have enought to keep the slopes open.

That is it for now all.

Do take care:)

Thomas

fun - confusion - fun

, , , ...

Hi All,

Well Duploworld calling again:) Updates are getting back to a more regular pattern again and I will hopefully soon be back to the usual twice a week:)

Well it has been the usual busy week, but weather has caused a lot of chaos and confusion, even messed up my planning.

I were scheduled to travel to Qaqortoq this Wednesday. Weather messed up that trip and in the end I ended up cancelling it all together:( Upside were that it left me a lot of time to actually take care of things I otherwise would have had a hard time getting done:)
Kind of sad though as it would have been my first trip to somewhere in Greenland, but hey I will most likely get other chances:)

Yesterday were picture taking day again... the landscape up here is still heavily affected by the last few rounds of Fohn winds. But it were great being alone in nature, just the camera and I.
Well did I get something to show for it? sure I did... there are new pictures in the "Greenlandic Winter Pictures" album and a single example is right below:

Saturday Night we went to a birthday at some friends house, good fun and lasted until 7 this morning... now that was fun:D

The upcomming week is all about meetings, meetings and meetings... and then the week after I am off for Copenhagen and guess what... more meetings...:faint:
Upside is that Miss Duplo:love: will be joining me this time:)

Anyway ending this update is another picture, taken on the way home from work this Thursday.

Take care you all and have a nice week:)

Thomas
