Life is good sometimes

, , , ...

Hi All,

And welcome to what seems to be the second Duploworld update in a week and what is likely the first actual mark of my slow return to my blog and to the OC.
Now my watchlist is a total mess and soo many things has been posted that I cannot promise to read up on everything that has been going on, but I will do my best over the next few days...

Now the reason for my time away is personal and there is yet a long way to go, but as said I am nt sure this is the place to share it, thus I will try using this space to focus on the positive aspects of my life and share all the good stuff that happens around me

Life is good

Above is from a day trip this Sunday and marks the initiation of my "Greenlandic Spring Photos 2009" gallery.
Sunday was in many ways an Absolutely amazing day and included what was probably the most amazing snowboarding day in my life

A friend and I fired up his Snowmobile, strap my snowboard on the back and head into the mountains behind Nuuk.

The Kobbe fiord viewpoint

We had quite a few runs during the day and took turns riding the snowmobile down while the other had the full pleasure of hitting some pure and very deep arctic powder runs
Add to that the upsides of snowboarding with a view like the one above and I dare say that life do not get much better than that. a temperature of leasurely -13C and the low hanging spring sun blasting away on a clear blue sky definitely helped too
walk no further

Now as You can see I had the camera with me, not while boarding, but the one of us driving the snowmobile carried it at all times, but as driving a snowmobile downhill and shooting photos at the same time is a little more than I am capable of, then you will have to satisfy with photos from the breaks.
Showoff

My friend and snowmobile owner decided to show me how to drive one of these babies, quite a show off, but an upside was that it gave me a chance to shoot something different than my surroundings
No he really is a pretty tight driver and seeing him handling the snowmobile, was quite impressive.

Now as promised in my last post I an not entirely done with posting winter photos either and what better way to round up this post, by showing you all another winter shot.

Arctic winter nights

Thanks for reading all and do take care

A vacation update....

, , , ...

... is unfortunately not what this post is about:(

Hi All,

And welcome to a Duploworld update, that has not only been delayed, but also does not contain the vacation update I have promised you:(
no real reason except that my work has kept me too busy to get the photos uploaded and everything ready yet. However tomorrow is a National holiday, so there is a good chance you will see it tomorrow sometime. I keep my fingers crossed that work will not mess it up again, but no promises.

Well actually it was not all works fault, did something interesting saturday evening, but you will have to wait a bit to hear more, as the final outcome is yet uncertain. Interesting it is though.

Sunday I actually spend two hours doing some more visial research on my theory about Greenlandic Spring.
The photo below does seem to support my theory and was fully worth the two hours on my belly in a combination of rock, wet snow, ice and the tiny signs of spring.
"Autumnal Spring"

Now I really do hope you like it, I got a few more from the trip, but they will be uploaded later on.
Just wanted to give a sign of life and say hi.
Friday evening we are off on a weekend boat trip into the fiords, something I am looking forward to.

Take care you all:)

What the snow revealed and a sunset

, , , ...

Hi All,

A Duploworldupdate with a couple of more from the emerging spring in Greenland and yes I am still working on a meaningful selection of photos to go with the vacation report, hopefully tomorrow will be the day.
What the snow revealed

Well above may by some be taken as a sign of spring and commented as ohh, flowers popping up already, but look more closely...
What you see are actually autumn, but due to the fast drop in temperature when the winter approaches, it seems that the faded summer of 2007 has actually been frozen down, to reveal it self again ones the snow melts away.
If I look closely when on my walks, it seems that in stead of slowly dying away, autumn was frosen down and has stayed that way during winter. It seems that our spring is actually initiated by the previous autumn dissolving while the comming spring emmerges?
Not sure I am right, but that is my conclusion on the last week of observations and a thing I will explore further.
What the snow revealed #2

Now the walk was neither very long in terms of distance, nor that challenging per se... however, the snowfileds still here has gone into their most dangerous season. due to the increased strength of the sun and the high temperature.
Walking without snowshoes can become a dangerous thing, as there at places are real lakes below or streams of melting water, so it is a season where one has to watch his steps.
Sunset road

Well, I think that is it for now. I hope to be back tomorrow with a Vacation update:)

Do take care you all:)

Greenlandic Bananas and perhaps an early sign of spring?

, , , ...

Hi All,

Well while I am rounding up the vacation report, here is a Duploworld update to keep you reading:)

Greenlandic Bananas

Well actually they have not been grown in Greenland, but this is how banas usually look when they arrive in the shops in Nuuk. Not very tempting I would say, but then again, by the time they reach the smaller settlements and villages they have changed colour... to Brown:yuck:
A colleague that grew up in one of the smaller settlements actually told me that as a child when he arrived in Nuuk, he would not eat a yellow banana as that was not how they were supposed to look (they used to be brown:yuck:)
Ohh well, not sure it is funny to read, but I find it a kind of fun...

First signs of spring?

Icicles has started to appear and the snow are slowly melting away, but then again there is a fair amount of snow that needs to be melted by the sun and the slopes are still open, but these icicles are a definite sign that spring are slowly returning to Greenland.

Thanks for reading this short update and do take care:)

It has returned....

The magic Greenlandic light...

Hi All:)

Welcome to a duploworld update dedicated to the magic greenlandic nights.

It all started when looking out our balcony doorway:

Through the balcony Dorway

Not too magical, but it marked the beginning of a couple of days with clear night skies and thus the return of the magic Greenlandic nights...
Even though spring is what the calendar claims it to be, weather and temperature thinks differently.
Sunday temperature read -20C and unusually clear skies, mostly it has been overcast, windy and snowy.
Just like this view:
Through my living room window

Not spring like at all. Just take a look here, not exactly what a balcony should look like at spring, not complaining though, because...
This sunday was spend snowboarding, I experimented with a "strapped to the board" camera, however the vibrations indured while shredding full speed, caused the camera to shut down after having delivered a 3 minute shaky blur of video capture... not much fun...
This weekend I will experiment with a helmet camera instead, having my body absorbing most of the vibrations and hopefully delivering a more usable output of what our slopes are like, so look out for that:)
Now back to the subject.
Harbour Night

Above was captured sunday night, with temperatures around -20C, heavy wind and snow whirling around everywhere, finding a location that would not mean having the front element of the lens snowcovered in seconds was a challenge, but we finally managed to find the above location.
I was joined by a good friend named HH, "camera assistant" and outdoor enthusiast:)

Slapping on a slightly longer lens, gave me a second chance...
Harbour night

Well not much more to tell... 3 more days and I am officially starting a 2 week vacation:happy:
First a weekend on snowboard up here, then a flight to Copenhagen monday morning and friday morning we set off towards "Club La Santa" on Lanzarote:happy:
Probaly giong to make a quick stop in Malmö before heading off from Copenhagen, but that is it.

Well guess that is it for now, more photos in the "Greenlandic Spring Photos 2008" album.

Do take care you all:)

On Copenhagen, Spring and the weekend

, , , ...

Hi All,

Finally a fresh duploworld update:)

Ohh I got so many news to share... almost too many... but I hope that some of you will actually make it to the bottom of this post:)
But well first things first... I spend a little less than a week in Copenhagen.
Copenhagen: Brick Wall

Copenhagen was, the usual irrellevant work stuff set aside, a true pleasure. Windy and grey yes, but compared to Nuuk it was darn close to being summerly:D
I had a great weekend down there, spend most of the time in the inner city on foot, have not done that in a while and it proved quite interesting. I rediscovered a lot of well known places, but the "Denmark 2008" gallery really is a lot more saying than I can ever be.
Copenhagen: The Huckster Pub

Set aside a stroll down "Vesterbro", the old "Red Light district" of Copenhagen, I think the by far most interesting place was the Legal Graffiti area located around the southern harbour.
Even though it is a legal graffiti area, it still has a sense of worn out, dirty and slightly "Dangerous" feel to it. A very interesting place photographically speaking.
The guys working their art here is truly talented and what I particularly enjoy is to see how beautiful this often looked down on artform can be when exercised in a legal environment.
One of the most interesting things I have done in a good while.
Copenhagen: Doorway

Being back in Greenland and seeing the calendar claiming it to be spring is simply something that does not fit reality very well. but as my seasonal albums follows the calendar I have opened up my "Greenland Spring Photos 2008" album.
THis weekend has been almost exclusively snowboarding for me and today I even brought my tiny red mini olympus with me up there, keep promising myself that I should bring my big camera, but I actually end up getting too carried away boarding when I am out there... it is one of the few things in life that I am actually equally passionate about, compared to photography.
A moderate -12C and occational snowbursts proved perfect conditions for boarding fast. the fact that we have had so much snow this year that we have been awarded with a new steeper slope only adds to the fun. That slope is meant for speed... ohh and a bit of airtime here and there:D
Simply too much fun:D It is actually necessary to walk a bit from the top lifts to get there, but it is definitely well worth the walk:D
Duplo getting ready

What else to tell... ohh yes... in just 14 days I am going on vacation for two full weeks, I am SOO much looking forward to it... one of the weeks will be spend at "Club La Santa" located on Lanzarote... the other week in Copenhagen.
Now i think that is it for now, I will bounce out and enjoy the witnerly Spring, not to mention Dinner, Miss Duplo just told me it is ready:)

Do take care you all:)

Hmm... and they call it spring?

, , , ...

Hi All,

I am back with another update from Duploworld and the title really says a lot about what this post is going to be all about, the spring or lack of same:D

I do however have a few surprise announcements hidden here too, so do not go away.

Lets start of with one of the surprise announcements. I have decied to post a little larger pictures and they will in the future have a "watermark" in them too.
As always ask before using them anywhere else:) I know most you would never do, but we all know it happens every now and then...
Anyway let me know what you think about it, one of the pictures in this post is shown full size just to examplify it.

Now back to weather, I mentioned in a comment to allans blog that things were out of the ordinary, weather wise.
It turned out that I was wrong because yesterday morning this view greeted me from the kitchen window:

One might say that things just returned to Normal. A blizzard came by and guess what it has not ended yet. weather forecast even predicts that it will nto peak until like monday:eyes:
Temperatures has dropped too a speady 10-15C below.
Well I went to work, thinking that it would be a silent day, but to my surprise things looked like a regular flying day:eyes:
Passengers boarding one of our more or less snowcovered Dash 7's:

A Sikorsky S61 drinking fuel (posted in full size to let you see the new size I have decided to post in):

I am continiously surprised by the weatherconditions we are able to operate in and remember these pictures was taken outside, so no windows in between...

These, and the following two pictures taken on my way home, makes me wonder if I at all will be able to join the SPN or if I have jump directly to SumPN:confused:
two more taken on my way home:

DId I hear anyone talking about spring? anyway it is good for the slopes, why I am really not complaining at all:D:D

Well and finally the big surprise announcement......

ready?..........

I have been invited to display my pictures in The official Pentax Photo Gallery:eyes:
I am really honoured and very hapy about it, being invited to join photographers as experienced as some of the people in there, is really a big honour to me. the site is currently in beta, but check back every now and then, some of the pictures posted there (not by me) is downright breathtaking:up:
Only nag is that only pictures taken with all pentac gear is allowed, which limits the pictures I am able to submit. But the only non pentac lens staying in my collection is a macro, so over time it will even out.
So far 9 pictures has been approved to the galleries.
Thanks Ned and John, I appreciate it greatly:yes:

Well that is it:)

Have a wonderfull weekend all and do take care:)

Thomas
