Deutsch:

tazpresso.

There are cooperatives in Ethiopia, Uganda and Tanzania and other African countries. The profits are kept by those cooperatives which decide democratically on the money's usage. The distribution is done by the Berlin based German newspaper die tageszeitung / taz. The import and the production are done by the GEPA - The Fair Trade Company.

tazpresso is organically grown and this is certificated by the EU. It has also got a certification of being fair traded. The small-scale farmers get a guaranteed price and long-term trade relations are important.

This espresso tastes only okay, though it has a nice crema and good consistency.

| © Elmar Driver

Ann Parker / Avon Neal: Hajj Paintings
Folk Art of the Great Pilgrimage
Book review in English

This photo book with photos by Ann Parker and texts by Avon Neal was published in English by Smithsonian Inst. Press. The German edition which I have read was published by the German publisher Frederking & Thaler.

The book shows examples of the so-called hajj paintings which can be found in Egypt. If a muslim has pilgrimaged to Mecca, his house often is decorated with paintings by local painters. These wall paintings can be of different styles and quality. But there are always elements that can be assigned to the Hajj and to Islam, for example the Kaaba, Mount Arafat, Abraham and Ismael, the horse Buraq and more.

The text offers the reader descriptions of the paintings, some information about the painters and a more detailed description of the Hajj. This is a nice book for all people who are interested in art, Egypt, Islam and, of course, especially in the Hajj. | © Elmar Driver

Raoul Peck: Lumumba (Movie recommendation)

, , , ...

"Lumumba"
by Raoul Peck
with Eriq Ebouaney,
Alex Descas,
Théophile Sowié,
Maka Kotto, ...
(France / Belgium / Haiti / Germany 2000)

Plot

The true story of the rise to power and brutal assassination of the formerly vilified and later redeemed leader of the independent Congo, Patrice Lumumba. Using newly discovered historical evidence, Haitian-born and later Congo-raised writer and director Raoul Peck renders an emotional and tautly woven account of the mail clerk and beer salesman with a flair for oratory and an uncompromising belief in the capacity of his homeland to build a prosperous nation independent of its former Belgium overlords.

Lumumba emerges here as the heroic sacrificial lamb dubiously portrayed by the international media and led to slaughter by commercial and political interests in Belgium, the United States, the international community, and his own administration; a true story of political intrigue and murder where political entities, captains of commerce, and the military dovetail in their quest for economic and political hegemony. | © L. Listen to the song "Mouso Niyalén" by Rokia Traoré

, , , ...

Artist: Rokia Traoré
Album: Wanita
Title: Mouso Niyalén
Year: 2000

Biography

Rokia Traoré's family was both a blessing and a curse for her musical career. Her father was a diplomat and she spent her childhood travelling over several continents, to Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, and France.

There she was exposed to a variety of styles of music, from classical, jazz, and pop to Indian traditional composition. However, her family was also part of Mali's nobility, which has traditional caste prohibitions against their members making music.

For her countryman Salif Keita, who was a member of the Manding people, it was an almost insurmountable burden. For Traore, though, the prohibitions were not as strict. The Bamana ethic group did have a musical tradition of their own, especially among women, with performers called griottes travelling to perform at weddings and gatherings.

Traore's musical style, however, has little in common with the griottes. Unlike their signature wailing sound, her voice is smooth and gentle, and her arrangements, while somewhat minimalist, make use of both traditional instruments like the balafon, n'goni, and kora, as well as acoustic guitar and electric bass.

That sound is evident on her debut release, Mouneissa, from 1998, but most evident on her 2000 release, Wanita. For Wanita, Traore wrote and arranged the entire album, seizing the controls from a male engineer who believed that a young girl was incapable of handling the production of an album. The result shows a deeply personal and individual style which reflects both innovation and tradition. (Stacia Proefrock, All Music Guide)
