The Complete Peanuts 1950-1952 by Charles M. Schulz

| © Elmar Driver

The Complete Peanuts 1950-1952 by Charles M. Schulz
Book review in English

Volume 1 of this amazing complete edition of the comic strips by Charles M. Schulz (published by Fantagraphics Books) is about the years 1950-1952. At the end of this first volume the reader also finds an essay about Charles M. Schulz and a detailed interview with this illustrator from the year 1987.

In October 1950 Charles M. Schulz had started his amazing Peanuts comic strips. Since then, his funny and big-headed characters appeared in the newspaper daily. In a subtle manner again and again he shows so many new variations of the same topics. And several times the reader probably might think about his own, also not perfect, life and he might smile about it then. | © Elmar Driver

Wolfberger Pinot Blanc 2007, Eguisheim

, , , ...

Pinot Blanc, vintage year 2007, Appellation Alsace Controlée

What the label says:
Established in 1902
"The Alsatian grape variety Pinot Blanc is known in Germany as Weißburgunder and is a grape variety of very good standing. Wolfberger Pinot Blanc is a delicately fruity, harmonious and refreshing wine."
"... goes very well along with fish, cold cuts and cheese."

I had mascarpone and bread with this low priced white wine. This cheese goes rather well with this wine. However, I'm afraid that I wasn't really enthusiastic about this Pinot Blanc from the Cave Wolfberger. Maybe it's just that I'm not a big fan of Pinot Blanc in general. I'll have to try some other Pinot Blancs by different winemakers. The remaining Wolfberger Pinot Blanc I enjoyed with Cassissée / Crème de Cassis by L'Héritier-Guyot, from the French city Dijon, and had a tasty Kir then.

"Dry, fresh and light white wine."

Low priced white wine, that I enjoyed with dinner. It goes well with fish, seafood and sausage. From my point of view, it goes especially well with goat's Camembert, some bread and a little butter.

My new photo album "Palace Monrepos, Germany"

, , , ...

Last winter I took some photos of the lakeside palace Monrepos and its environs.

Monrepos lies next to the German city Ludwigsburg in the southwest of Germany and was formerly used by the royal family of Württemberg.

The photo on the left shows some tree trunks lying next to a country-specific meadow with fruit trees, some kilometers away from the palace.

In the photo section you'll find more pictures in my new album "Palace Monrepos Germany".

My new photo album "Strasbourg, France"

I've spent 1 January 2009 and the turn of the year in Strasbourg and took some pictures, again with my cell phone.

Strasbourg is the capital of the Alsace region in northeastern France. The photo on the left shows an outer wall of the cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg with a small demon.

For more pictures have a look at my new album in the photo section.

Bram Stoker: Dracula / Bilingual book review

Bram Stoker: Dracula

| © Elmar Driver

Bram Stoker: Dracula
Book review in English

I've read the English book that was published by Penguin Books. If you aren't a native speaker you might have some problems while reading this text from the year 1897. From time to time there are also parts containing British dialects. But all in all it's worth reading the original English edition, of course.

This Penguin book has an introduction, a book list, notes, and some letters as well that were written between Bram Stoker and Walt Whitman. You'll also find a letter from Charlotte Stoker to her son Bram Stoker, an essay by Stoker about censorship and an interview that Stoker did with Winston Churchill.

The interesting thing about this text is that the story is told from different points of view, be it in diaries, letters, newspaper articles and so on. This first vampire story is far more than a spine-chiller. It makes us think about the nature of reality and dream. It's about identity, dream world, insanity, sexual desire and love. | © Elmar Driver

Have a look at my new photo album "Colmar, France"

, , , ...

In November 2008 I've spent an evening in Colmar which is a city in France and one of the bigger cities in the region Alsace, close to Germany.

Unfortunately I had some minor problems taking pictures in the evening with my cell phone.

So, I chose smaller sizes for the photos in this new photo album.

The picture on the left shows a teddy bear I saw in a show window of an exhibition featuring old toys.

David Flusser: Jesus / Bilingual book review

David Flusser: Jesus

| © Elmar Driver

David Flusser: Jesus
Book review in English

In Germany this book was published by Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag. The English version was published by The Magnes Press. I've read the book in German. David Flusser first published his biography of Jesus already thirty years ago and then shortly before his death in the year 2000 he published a totally revised book.

This book is about the Jewish Jesus. David Flusser portrays the historical person Jesus, based on the facts and profoundly. The author gets the reader thinking and sparks his interest in further information on Jesus. | © Elmar Driver

My new photo album "Stuttgart, Germany"

, , , ...

I've started a new photo album with pictures from Stuttgart. Stuttgart is the biggest town in southwestern Germany and the capital of the state Baden-Württemberg. The picture above shows the Königsbau, former home of the Stuttgart stock exchange, and next to it on the left the art museum. Both buildings are next to the castle square in the middle of town.

Right now there are only three photos in this album but more pictures are following soon. All the photos are taken with my mobile phone.

Ann Parker: Kunst des Hadsch / Hajj Paintings

, , , ...

| © Elmar Driver

Ann Parker / Avon Neal: Hajj Paintings
Folk Art of the Great Pilgrimage
Book review in English

This photo book with photos by Ann Parker and texts by Avon Neal was published in English by Smithsonian Inst. Press. The German edition which I have read was published by the German publisher Frederking & Thaler.

The book shows examples of the so-called hajj paintings which can be found in Egypt. If a muslim has pilgrimaged to Mecca, his house often is decorated with paintings by local painters. These wall paintings can be of different styles and quality. But there are always elements that can be assigned to the Hajj and to Islam, for example the Kaaba, Mount Arafat, Abraham and Ismael, the horse Buraq and more.

The text offers the reader descriptions of the paintings, some information about the painters and a more detailed description of the Hajj. This is a nice book for all people who are interested in art, Egypt, Islam and, of course, especially in the Hajj. | © Elmar Driver

Henry Barakat: Safar Barlik / A movie tip

"Safar Barlik" / "The Exile"
by Henry Barakat
with Fairuz
...
Lyrics and Musical Score: Rahbani Brothers
Lebanon 1967

Plot

The events of this film take place in Lebanon at a time prior to the First World War when most of the Arab countries were under the domination of the Ottoman Empire. These were very difficult days for the local population who had to endure injustice and cruelty, their crops were confiscated to feed the army and young men were recruited by force into the invaders' army.

If they tried to avoid this and were caught they were sent into exile, hence the title of the film. The fight against oppression is fully illustrated in the film and told in the songs and music. | © from the book "Fairouz - Legend and Legacy" by Kamal Boullata and Sargon Boulos

Taureck: Michel Foucault / Bilingual book review

Bernhard H. F. Taureck: Michel Foucault

| © Elmar Driver

Bernhard H. F. Taureck: Michel Foucault
Book review in English

I'm afraid that there is no English edition of this book available. This monograph in pocket edition of the philosopher Michel Foucault (1926-1984) was published in Germany by the Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag. It's not that much about Foucault's life but more about his contribution to the discourses of power, control, anthropology and so forth.

It is not always easy to follow the text and even with this book you still better read the original texts by Foucault himself but this book gives you a good idea of Foucault's world of thoughts. The author stresses the immense importance of different systems of thought coming up in history for Michel Foucault's own thinking and writing. Last not least, Bernhard F. H. Taureck calls the reader's attention to some nice related writers. | © Elmar Driver

John Milton Reading Room / A website tip

, , , ...

I've added a new link to my sidebar. The John Milton Reading Room contains all of John Milton's poetry and a nice selection of his prose.

A short biography of John Milton (1608-1674)

John Milton wrote essays, sonnets and, most importantly, Paradise Lost, considered by many scholars the greatest epic poem of the English language. Milton was a Londoner and received his education at Cambridge (1625-32), where he wrote his famous poem "On the Morning of Christ's Nativity." During his career Milton was an active voice on contemporary issues of politics and religion, and during the English Civil War he sided with the anti-royalists under Oliver Cromwell.

His rousing tracts supporting the Commonwealth -- which included an argument defending the execution of Charles I -- led to a position as a foreign secretary (1649). Milton somehow managed to escape serious punishment after the restoration of the monarchy (1660) and lived the remainder of his life quietly. Blind after 1652, he dictated the entirety of Paradise Lost (1667), the story of Satan's rebellion (and defeat) and the fall of Adam and Eve.

Four years later he published the story of Christ's triumph over Satan's temptations in Paradise Regained and the drama Samson Agonistes. His other famous writings include the masque Comus (1637), a defense of free speech titled Areopagiticaz (1644) and several sonnets, including "On His Blindness" ("When I consider how my light is spent") and "On His Deceased Wife" ("Methought I saw my late espoused saint"). | © Answers.com
