Gewurztraminer 2008, Cave D'Obernai

, , , ...

Deutsch:

Gewurztraminer / Les Cigognes, Jahrgang 2008, Appellation Alsace Controlée

Gewurztraminer / Les Cigognes, vintage year 2008, Appellation Alsace Controlée
Mis en bouteille par Cave D'Obernai - France
13% vol., servir frais / to be served at cool temperature

What the label says:

"This wine, rather aromatic, shows a rich bouquet - with flavors of fruits, flowers and spices."
"Can be served as an apéritif or along with foie gras, spicy types of cheese and along with the dessert."

The French city Obernai lies 25 km southwesterly from the city Strasbourg. This low priced Gewurztraminer was a tasty apéritif and I liked it with some bread and munster cheese, too. It also went well with an Alsatian cheese from the Vosges region produced by the Fromagerie Siffert Frères but I liked this white wine best with a rather delicate cheese called Grès des Vosges.

Wolfberger Pinot Blanc 2007, Eguisheim

Deutsch:

"The Alsatian grape variety Pinot Blanc is known in Germany as Weißburgunder and is a grape variety of very good standing. Wolfberger Pinot Blanc is a delicately fruity, harmonious and refreshing wine."

"... goes very well along with fish, cold cuts and cheese."

I had mascarpone and bread with this low priced white wine. This cheese goes rather well with this wine. However, I'm afraid that I wasn't really enthusiastic about this Pinot Blanc from the Cave Wolfberger. Maybe it's just that I'm not a big fan of Pinot Blanc in general. I'll have to try some other Pinot Blancs by different winemakers. The remaining Wolfberger Pinot Blanc I enjoyed with Cassissée / Crème de Cassis by L'Héritier-Guyot, from the French city Dijon, and had a tasty Kir then.

Deutsch:

"Dry, fresh and light white wine."

Low priced white wine, that I enjoyed with dinner. It goes well with fish, seafood and sausage. From my point of view, it goes especially well with goat's Camembert, some bread and a little butter.

My new photo album "Strasbourg, France"

I've spent 1 January 2009 and the turn of the year in Strasbourg and took some pictures, again with my cell phone.

Strasbourg is the capital of the Alsace region in northeastern France. The photo on the left shows an outer wall of the cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg with a small demon.

For more pictures have a look at my new album in the photo section.

In November 2008 I've spent an evening in Colmar which is a city in France and one of the bigger cities in the region Alsace, close to Germany.

Unfortunately I had some minor problems taking pictures in the evening with my cell phone.

So, I chose smaller sizes for the photos in this new photo album.

The picture on the left shows a teddy bear I saw in a show window of an exhibition featuring old toys.

Taureck: Michel Foucault / Bilingual book review

Bernhard H. F. Taureck: Michel Foucault

| © Elmar Driver

Bernhard H. F. Taureck: Michel Foucault
Book review in English

I'm afraid that there is no English edition of this book available. This monograph in pocket edition of the philosopher Michel Foucault (1926-1984) was published in Germany by the Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag. It's not that much about Foucault's life but more about his contribution to the discourses of power, control, anthropology and so forth.

It is not always easy to follow the text and even with this book you still better read the original texts by Foucault himself but this book gives you a good idea of Foucault's world of thoughts. The author stresses the immense importance of different systems of thought coming up in history for Michel Foucault's own thinking and writing. Last not least, Bernhard F. H. Taureck calls the reader's attention to some nice related writers. | © Elmar Driver

Lemmy Caution alias Ivan Johnson and Natasha von Braun discuss the meaning of love

Johnson: No, when I talked about falling in love
Natasha: In love? What’s that?
[Johnson walks around Natasha]
Johnson: This
Natasha: No, I know what that is: it’s sensuality
Johnson: No, sensuality flows from it
It cannot exist without love
Natasha: So what is love, then?
[Natasha’s voice:]
Your voice, your eyes...
...your hands, your lips...
Our silences, our words...
Light that goes...
...light that returns
A single smile between us both
In quest of knowledge...
...I watched night create day...
...while we seemed unchanged
O beloved of all, beloved of one alone...
...your mouth silently promised to be happy
Away, away, says hate; never, never, says love
A caress leads us from our childhood
Increasingly I see the human form...
...as a lover’s dialogue
The heart has but one mouth
Everything ordered by chance
All words without aforethought
Sentiments adrift
Men roam the city
A glance, a word
Because I love you
Everything moves
To live, only advance!
Aim straight for those you love
I went towards you, endlessly towards the light
If you smile, it is to enfold me all the better
The rays of your arms pierce the mist

Leos Carax: Les Amants du Pont Neuf (Movie tip)

"Les Amants du Pont-Neuf"
("The Lovers on the Bridge")
by Leos Carax
with Juliette Binoche,
Denis Lavant,
Klaus-Michael Gruber,
Daniel Buain,
Edith Scob,
...
France 1991

Plot

Set against Paris' oldest bridge, the Pont Neuf, while it was closed for repairs, this film is a love story between two young vagrants: Alex, a would be circus performer addicted to alcohol and sedatives and Michele, a painter driven to a life on the streets because of a failed relationship and an affliction which is slowly turning her blind. The film portrays the harsh existence of the homeless as Alex, Michele and Hans, an older vagrant survive on the streets with their wits.

As they both slowly get their lives back together, Michele becomes increasingly dependent on Alex as her vision deteriorates further. Fearing that Michele will leave him if she receives a new medical treatment Alex attempts to keep Michele practically a prisoner. The streets, skies and waterways of Paris are used as a backdrop to the story in a series of stunning visuals which dominate the film. | © IMDb

"Diva" by Jean-Jacques Beineix

Plot

Young Parisian mail courier, living a bohemian lifestyle, is content with his circle of friends and listening to opera, particularly one exceptional American diva who refuses to be recorded. So enamored with her, he makes an illegal tape of her at a concert. But when the tape is confused with one implicating a powerful politician with the mob, he must use all his ingenuity to survive. Particularly notable for its stylish New-Wave production values and extended motorcycle chase scene.

Jean-Luc Godard: Nouvelle Vague (Movie recommendation)

"Nouvelle Vague"
("New Wave")
by Jean-Luc Godard
with Alain Delon,
Domiziana Giordano,
Jacques Dacqmine,
Christophe Odent,
Roland Amstutz,
Cécile Reigher,
Laurence Côte,
Joseph Lisbona,
...
(Switzerland / France 1990)

Plot

Nouvelle Vague marks the beginning of a period in Jean-Luc Godard's career in which he made films that looked back on his previous work. In these retrospective films, Godard asked himself whether it is possible to continue as a film director under the conditions imposed by international commercial cinema. Appropriately enough, Nouvelle Vague concerns the return of a man (Roger Lennox / Richard Lennox, played by Alain Delon, superstar of 60s and 70s international cinema) who may or may not have returned from the dead.

The film's narrative is extremely disjointed and might be better understood as an essay on the idea of returning. The theme of a return from the dead gives Godard the opportunity to come back to the religious imagery and theological considerations that interested him from 1983's Hail Mary. The film's dialogue is a patchwork of unattributed quotations from works of literature, philosophy, and economics, a technique that Godard adopted in most of his films after this one. Even if the film's "story" is not easy to understand, the beauty of its images and sounds, along with the sublime rhythms of the editing, may be enough to ravish some audiences. | © Louis Schwartz, All Movie Guide
