David Flusser hat diese Monographie über Jesus, die in Deutschland im Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag erschienen ist,schon vor über dreißig Jahren erstveröffentlicht und dann kurz vor seinem Tod im Jahr 2000 noch einmal völlig überarbeitet und neu veröffentlicht.
Im Zentrum dieses sehr gut lesbaren Buches steht der jüdische Jesus. Diese Schilderung des historischen Jesus ist sachlich und gleichzeitig tiefsinnig. David Flusser gibt dem Leser viele Denkanstöße und weckt die weitere Neugierde. | © Elmar Driver

In Germany this book was published by Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag. The English version was published by The Magnes Press. I've read the book in German. David Flusser first published his biography of Jesus already thirty years ago and then shortly before his death in the year 2000 he published a totally revised book.
This book is about the Jewish Jesus. And David Flusser portrays the historical person Jesus, based on the facts and very profoundly. The author gets the reader thinking and sparks his interest in further information on the historical person Jesus. | © Elmar Driver

Ann Parker / Avon Neal: Kunst des HadschBuchbesprechung auf DeutschIm Untertitel heißt es bei "Kunst des Hadsch" aus dem Verlag Fredering & Thaler "Wandbilder erzählen von der Pilgerreise nach Mekka".
Dieser Bildband mit Fotografien von Ann Parker und Texten von Avon Neal zeigt Beispiele der sogenannten Hadschmalerei, die in Ägypten weit verbreitet ist. Macht ein Muslim oder eine Muslima den Hadsch, so wird das Haus von, meist vor Ort lebenden, Malern mit Wandbildern dekoriert.
Diese Wandbilder können unterschiedlichster Art und Qualität sein. Immer wieder aber tauchen Elemente auf, die dem Hadsch bzw. dem Islam zugeordnet werden können. Beispiele hierfür sind die Kaaba, der Berg Arafat, Abraham und Ismael, das Pferd Buraq usw.

Book review in EnglishThis photo book with photos by Ann Parker and texts by Avon Neal was published in English by Smithsonian Inst. Press. The German edition which I have read was published by the German publisher Frederking & Thaler.
The book shows examples of the so-called hajj paintings which can be found in Egypt. If a muslim has pilgrimaged to Mecca, his house often is decorated with paintings by local painters. These wall paintings can be of different styles and quality. But there are always elements that can be assigned to the Hajj and to Islam, for example the Kaaba, Mount Arafat, Abraham and Ismael, the horse Buraq and more.
The text offers the reader descriptions of the paintings, some information about the painters and a more detailed description of the Hajj. This is a nice book for all people who are interested in art, Egypt, Islam and, of course, especially in the Hajj. | ©

Michael Tilly: Das Judentum / Buchbesprechung auf Deutsch
"Das Judentum" von Michael Tilly ist erschienen in der Reihe marixwissen im Marix Verlag und erzählt von der Geschichte des Judentums, von wichtigen jüdischen Texten und Denkern sowie von jüdischer Glaubenspraxis in Gottesdienst und Alltag.
In seiner historischen Darstellung beginnt Michael Tilly mit der Zeit des babylonischen Exils und verzichtet also auf eine Darstellung der Zeit davor bzw. die Darstellung der heilsgeschichtlichen Ursprünge. Er setzt Schwerpunkte und vermittelt dem Leser so einen Überblick über die Geschichte des Judentums bis zur Gegenwart.
Es folgt die fundierte Beschreibung der Textdokumente des Judentums und einiger jüdischer Denker. Die anschließende Schilderung jüdischen Lebens mit beispielsweise Erkärungen zu den religiösen Festen zeigt anschaulich, wie Juden auch heute ihren Glauben leben. | © Elmar Driver

Book review in English
This book was published in Germany by Marix Verlag and is about Jewish history, important Jewish texts and persons. It's about today's everyday life and prayers as well.
The author Michael Tilly starts his description of Jewish history with the exile in Babylon. Thus he doesn't talk about the time before and the origins known from the Bible or Torah. By emphasizing important aspects of Jewish history, Michael Tilly gives the reader a good overview of Jewish history until today.
Then Michael Tilly describes very well some important Jewish texts and some persons behind those texts too. In the last part of his book the author explains the meaning of religious holidays, the service in the synagogue and other aspects of today's Jewish life. | © Elmar Driver

Alan Posener: Maria / Buchbesprechung auf Deutsch
Dieses knappe Taschenbuch aus dem Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag über Maria, die Mutter Jesu, ist erschienen in der Reihe "rowohlts monographien". Die "rororo Monographien" wurden begründet von Kurt Kusenberg und werden nun herausgegeben von Wolfgang Müller und Uwe Naumann.
Neben der Darstellung / Vermutung der "historischen" Maria, beschreibt Alan Posener auch, wie sich die Marienverehrung entwickelt hat bzw. wie die unterschiedlichen religiösen Gruppierungen "ihre" Vorstellung von Maria entwickelten.
Wie immer in dieser Reihe bei Rowohlt, sind im Anhang Zeugnisse berühmter Persönlichkeiten angeführt. Unter anderem ein Auszug aus "Let it be" von den Beatles: "When I find myself in times of trouble/ Mother Mary comes to me/ Speaking words of wisdom:/ Let it be." ... Alan Posener: Maria / Book review in English
It seems that unfortunately there isn't an English edition of this title but only a Spanish one. I've read the German pocket book which is published by the German publisher "Rowohlt Verlag", within a series of short monographs.
These monographs usually have many illustrations and show us also what famous persons said about the person being portrayed, like in that Beatles song "Let it be", for instance. In the song it says about the Virgin Mary: "When I find myself in times of trouble/ Mother Mary comes to me/ Speaking words of wisdom:/ Let it be."
So, this book is about Mary, the mother of Jesus or the Virgin Mary. And Alan Posener writes about the "historical" Mary and about the adoration of the Virgin Mary as well. Different religious groups developed their very own perceptions of Mary. ... By the way, Alan Posener writes a nice blog, too. Günter Kettermann: Atlas zur Geschichte des IslamDieser im Verlag der Wissenschaftlichen Buchgesellschaft erschienene Atlas bietet viele gute Karten und knapp gefasste Artikel über die Zeit vom 7. Jh. bis in unsere Zeit.
Das hier berücksichtigte Gebiet reicht von Westafrika bis Indonesien. Wenn man den "Atlas zur Geschichte des Islam" nicht nur als Nachschlagewerk benutzt, sondern komplett durchliest, stören manchmal die detaillierten Aufzählungen und der eher stichwortartige Stil.
Aber gerade in den Details finden sich oft interessante Aspekte und Informationen. Hin und wieder vermisst man natürlich etwas mehr zusammenhängende Darstellungen. Der Text erklärt sich dann unter Umständen nicht ohne weitere Informationen.
Alles in allem aber eine gute Gesamtdarstellung, die sehr viele Anhaltspunkte für weitere Lektüren und die sonstige Beschäftigung mit dem Thema Islam bietet. | ©

Two pieces taken from the Mass in B MinorAbout the musicThe Mass in B Minor is the only musical setting of the Latin Ordinary that Bach wrote. In his Mass in B Minor, Bach sets to music the traditional five texts of the Ordinary that composers had focused upon for centuries. These are the Kyrie (in English, "Lord, have mercy"), Gloria ("Glory to God in the highest"), Credo ("I believe in one God"), Sanctus ("Holy, holy, holy Lord"), and Agnus Dei ("Lamb of God").
Bach's setting is a little unusual in that he separates the final section of text of the Sanctus (beginning with the word "benedictus" and lumps it together with the final movement, the Agnus Dei.
It is not clear whether Bach wrote the B minor Mass for a Lutheran service, or for the city of Dresden, which was primarily a Catholic city. | ©
