NIGERIA @ 51: BEREAVEMENTS NOT ACHIEVEMENTS.
Saturday, October 1, 2011 3:20:00 PM
As expected, her numerous children would gather to celebrate the birthday of their beloved mother. It really should be a day of joy, celebrations and praises to the Lord.
51 years is a great milestone worthy to be celebrated. "We celebrate achievements not bereavements". At 51, Nigeria have been bereft of Unity, Peace and Justice which once united it's people and made them a single unit worthy to be celebrated and emulated because of their achievements, ability and greatness.
Nigerians now look at their past wishing they can reach that milestone again. The modern day government has been one known for promises and setting goals. Goals which seems more of illusions and unachievable.
The vision 2020 - Many Nigerians do not absolutely believe these goals can be achieved before the year 2020 given the slow pace or somehow retarding movement the country now operates. To some of them, the Vision 2020 project is more of a mirage and should be meant to deceive foolish people.
Peace & Unity - Perhaps the major tool in nation building. Peace & Unity was something that once united us when we possessed it. "You cannot showcase what you don't possess". Nowadays, this precious tool no longer exists. There's been talks from different people and countries that Nigeria will soon disintegrate. I remember vividly when the former Libyan President Col. Ghadaffi said the best thing for Nigeria is 'division' because of the lack of Peace in the country and also when Former President of the US said Nigeria will disintegrate by 2015. "When there's Peace, Unity will be affirmed. When Peace is absent, Unity goes off".
Militants group are now the major tormentor of Peace in the country. The two major groups comes from the two major parts of the country; the Niger Delta militants from the South (South-South) and the 'Boko Haram' from the North.
Niger Delta Militiants - The activities of oil companies in the oil rich Southern region of the country did raised eyebrows. The notable oil spilling from these companies have destroyed farmlands, waters (rivers, well, streams and more) and of course the aquatic life like the fish which serve as food and source of money to these people. What do you expect? When your government in collaboration with some foreign oil companies take from you what you have and never care about how their activities harm you neither do they care about your welfare! The government keeps backing these companies just because of the money but sometimes never shows concern about the well-being of the people. These made militants rise to say 'enough is enough, we're not animals. Give us what we deserve'. Even amnesty did not help. Though militants accepted the amnesty and surrendered their weapons based on the governments' promise to settle their demands. But their activities still looms today like bombing and notably kidnap because the government neglected most of them after the amnesty programme.
The 'Boko Haram' - The Islamic sect. have been the chief cause of major terrorist activities in the country. This group gets some of their funds and members from countries like Chad and Niger. They are strongly against Western influence or Civilization. Thus 'Boko Haram' means 'Civilization is prohibited'. They've commited various suicide bombings and carried out several attacks on Individuals and Government agencies. Their quest is definitely something I would say is born out of idleness or laziness. The world is a global village, civilization spreads as fast as wildfire. How can you think of removing civilization from a country like Nigeria. It's more of trying to get water out of stone.
There are many more issues which should rather make the country worry than celebrate. Poor social amenities, Internet fraud, 419, Poor infrastructures and most notably a Corrupt government which is becoming inevitable and the source of other problems.
Nigeria is now 51 years old but it's been bereaved and ought to be solving problems not celebrating. Though we celebrate but deep in our hearts, we know there isn't just much to be celebrated. "It's better to celebrate achievements than to celebrate age". A country whose people were once commited, proudly Nigerians, energetic, hardworking, happy and successful has now turned into a country whose people are now Torpor and Lassituded.
Nigeria: Once Achieved, now Bereaved.
May the good Lord save Nigeria.
Long live Nigeria.
God bless Nigeria.
Nigeria: Good People, Great Nation.
HEAL THE WORLD.
