NIGERIA @ 50: NOT TO CELEBRATE BUT TO DELIBERATE.

, , , , ,

On the 1st of October 1960; 50 years ago, Nigeria was created. We gained independence from the British and we got the freedom we have been waiting for. We knew it's time to start building our country so we started to build a nation with the vision of making it a model, our leaders made so much effort towards realizing this. We were proud of our growth and resources and determined to achieve our goal because we had great leaders to lead us to the promised land.
The standard of education was growing steadily, economy was growing fast, we started to develop our infrastructures, foreign investors came in also. Together we had the zeal to make Nigeria great.
Somewhere, somehow, everything began to collapse steadily. Greed, Corruption, Injustice and Violence began to take over. Our country seemed to be collapsing and all we did was criticize our corrupt leaders. Few of us prayed for the country, few of us thought of what we can do to save our country and few of us believed in our potentials. We struggled through the years seeking to revive the country, seeking to revive the tattered image but things doesn't seem to be getting better because of the greed and mostly corruption that dwelt in us.
Today, the education sector has changed. The power sector has changed. What about other amenities that should improve the country? Foreign investors are not coming as much and some of them are leaving especially because of the failed power sector. We have an education sector where gaining admissions to schools is not much of merit but of the rich. A power sector where the nation cannot boast of steady power and where some places have been in blackout for a long time. Roads are not motorable anymore. The economy is falling and the embezzlement of goverment funds by the politicians doesn't seem to be getting any better. A country where safety can not be guaranteed because of the bad security system. A nation where unknown people now kill or assassinate the security operatives for fear of being caught or exposed. Even the average man cannot live a proper standard of life because of the high rate of poverty. Yet we want to celebrate our golden jubilee with billions of Naira.
This is not what our founding fathers have left. They probably won't be happy with the way things are. We still pretend as if nothing bad is happening to us, the leaders try to cover up things. "A man who knows he has been poisoned and yet pretends as if it's not harming him will die slowly and may not be saved". Despite our problems, we still boast of having the largest black population in the world, being the most populous black nation, being the giant of Africa. "It's not about what you have but what you have achieved with what you have". Our mission now seems more of an illusion to us. This is not the time for much celebration but the time for deliberation. We're celebrating as if we have succeeded in building a perfect nation. Our problems are more than our achievements. If it could get this bad in 50 years, what about the next 50 years?
Nigeria is fifty, most of us are guilty, there is no safety, power is not steady, factories aren't busy, rural areas are empty, everyone for the city, schools lack quality, streets are filthy, everywhere is noisy, parents full of vanity, children are naughty, diseases are plenty, healthcare is costly, roadblocks are many, road vehicles rickety, journeys are risky, leaders not thrifty, religiousness is scanty, don't cry in self-pity, let's all arise quickly, everybody in unity, all working jointly, seriously in honesty, not being greedy and God will show mercy.
We should pray for our country, that God bless us with leaders like King Solomon. That we live in peace and harmony. That corruption destroys us no more. That we build our nation progressively. The only thing we should celebrate is thanking God for keeping us till this moment. That we didn't perish despite what we're going through. We have to put all hands on deck to ensure we achieve our goal. Our ancestors will be proud of us indeed.
You are a Saviour.
God bless Nigeria.
Nigeria: Good People, Great Nation.
HEAL THE WORLD.

Thanks so much. I'm proud of you too. Thanks for praying for Nigeria. We hope things get better in the near future.

KYLEcastus2 Friday, October 1, 2010 1:24:26 PM

ok,i have read your blog.seems to me that foreign investors will not invest because your country is rife with corruption, who in the right mind would invest in such a corrupted place?Your country is no different from some others,India,Vietnam,Pakistan, etc, whereby corruption is on a grand scale, and it is divided into the super rich, and the low level poor,so you are not unique. In your country, and others,it seems that it is everyman for himself, and the weak go to the wall,i cannot see this changing without a revolution, but do the weak have the resolve for this?i doubt it.and i cannot blame them, they will be sought out and punished if they show any sign of rebellion. So what is the solution?i have no idea,it is a culture trip, and almost impossible to change, maybe your prayers will help, although they have not up to now.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Friday, October 1, 2010 3:16:09 PM

It's not impossible to change. If the people can change, the country will change. Who's the people here? The leaders of course. Corruption didn't start at this level in the country, it started slowly but we failed to see into the future and see the harm it can cause. We let it spread. Some countries like yours has corruption also but you people are fighting it. Same can happen here. If we fight it with truth, we're sure of victory. We need the leaders to be role models. If they are, younger ones will learn from them.

KYLEcastus2 Friday, October 1, 2010 3:20:11 PM

leaders as role models,,such a task,,,it will take many years,if at all.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Friday, October 1, 2010 3:30:49 PM

Yes! We need time to transform Nigeria. You don't expect miracles in this serious situation. It's a step by step affair. Just like it took your country a long time to be like it is.

KYLEcastus2 Friday, October 1, 2010 3:34:09 PM

of course, patience is the key word.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Friday, October 1, 2010 3:38:01 PM

If you had gone through the difficult times like this with your country, you would have understood it can be changed. You were quick to rule out.

Things may even worsen by 50 more years if changes doesn't start now. The problems seems to be worsening now. Look at the students all having bad results, what about the massacre, the bomb on the 50th anniversary celebration, what about sports just take a look at football also. This just seems to be the beginning of another terrific time. It seems the problems are spreading. Sports wasn't this bad before, bombs wasn't exploding before, not too much bloodshed before, no mass failure in exams before but it's all beginning. We need a turning point.
@Kyle. Maybe you should visit someday.

KYLEcastus2 Sunday, October 3, 2010 8:39:45 AM

well maybe one day i will, but you are a nation with multiple problems, needs a radical re-think by all,but difficult to overcome corruption when it is embedded so deep.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Sunday, October 3, 2010 8:48:57 AM

It's not as difficult as you rule. Maybe a revolution is the easiest way and i'll be happy to have you head the team.

KYLEcastus2 Sunday, October 3, 2010 8:52:40 AM

revolution sometimes makes things happen, but a cost of many lives,so i pass on that invitation, the pen is mightier than the sword is a phrase that comes to mind.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Sunday, October 3, 2010 8:59:29 AM

So you're scared of dying now

KYLEcastus2 Sunday, October 3, 2010 9:05:05 AM

no,just hate violence.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Sunday, October 3, 2010 9:55:28 AM

So do i. Dialogue is the best way from the way i see it. Change, younger generation coming up strong and positive.

KYLEcastus2 Sunday, October 3, 2010 10:08:39 AM

yes, many students are involved in all manner of activities, they do a good job.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Sunday, October 3, 2010 10:20:31 AM

Yes. Let's keep it up and the future will be great. We still need parental guidance especially for those of us going bad. It's not about what we want to be but also about what we want the world to be like.

KYLEcastus2 Sunday, October 3, 2010 10:23:57 AM

well what we become is vital to what we give to the world.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Sunday, October 3, 2010 10:39:45 AM

Not everyone. You should know the word GREED still exists.

KYLEcastus2 Sunday, October 3, 2010 10:41:35 AM

well that is an ongoing problem, some people are just not diverse enough in intelligence,so they break the law, such are people.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Sunday, October 3, 2010 10:50:15 AM

Racism. Because they are scared of anything different from them.

KYLEcastus2 Sunday, October 3, 2010 10:55:05 AM

not just racism, bigots and discrimination as a whole is still rife in some parts, this just shows a low level of intelligence, but they can be dangerous.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Sunday, October 3, 2010 10:58:48 AM

Not just some parts. Everywhere, people get discriminated for different things. It's not late to start working for transformation.

KYLEcastus2 Sunday, October 3, 2010 11:00:52 AM

well it is against the law in the uk to discriminate against anyone, and people have been jailed for doing so,,other countries may like to follow.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Sunday, October 3, 2010 11:12:49 AM

No country supports discrimination either. It doesn't mean people can't break the law. Even if someone discriminates me and the police arrests and jail the person, i still know and feel that i've been discriminated.

KYLEcastus2 Sunday, October 3, 2010 11:18:16 AM

well yes,but at least you know they are being punished, and they may think twice before doing it again.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Sunday, October 3, 2010 11:27:31 AM

Changing their mentality is the thing. They won't even think about doing it talk more of thinking twice.

KYLEcastus2 Sunday, October 3, 2010 11:37:55 AM

well maybe punishment may do this.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Monday, October 4, 2010 2:21:13 PM

Punishment may scare them but not change them. A heart to heart talk is the best way to change somebody's mentality. I hope you know that.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Monday, October 4, 2010 2:21:31 PM

KYLEcastus2 Monday, October 4, 2010 2:55:24 PM

you are talking about people who will go to any lengths to obtain money,,i will let you have the heart to heart ,,doh doh

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Monday, October 4, 2010 11:03:58 PM

you still don't seem to understand. ok! here's a question for you: why are you not going to any length to have money?

KYLEcastus2 Tuesday, October 5, 2010 6:24:42 AM

because i have money,i work at weekends sometimes when i need cash.it is you that does not understand people, people are diverse, and many do as they wish, you will not change them, they will not let you, come to the real world, and burst that bubble your in.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Tuesday, October 5, 2010 6:52:29 AM

Do you think the real world of yours is meant to be bad anyway?

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Tuesday, October 5, 2010 6:53:13 AM

Do you think the real world of yours is meant to be bad anyway?

KYLEcastus2 Tuesday, October 5, 2010 6:55:35 AM

the world is diverse,good/bad,,live with it,people are people, and you will not change that.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Tuesday, October 5, 2010 7:00:39 AM

Yes they are people, the world is diverse but we can change that. I mean the bad ones can be changed, they weren't born bad anyway. Someone changed them, why wasn't it impossible for to change them in the first place?

KYLEcastus2 Tuesday, October 5, 2010 7:03:43 AM

the thinking of these people changed, they wish for easy money without working for it.no one changed them, they change themselves.wish you would stop trying to change the world,it will drive you nuts.

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Tuesday, October 5, 2010 7:20:46 AM

Did you tell that to Martin Luther King or Nelson Mandela?

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Tuesday, October 5, 2010 7:22:21 AM

Did you tell that to Martin Luther King or Nelson Mandela?

KYLEcastus2 Tuesday, October 5, 2010 7:23:25 AM

you class yourself with these people?how arrogant,,times are different now,you try and change the world, you will fail,,

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Tuesday, October 5, 2010 7:29:42 AM

I didn't class myself with them. What i'm saying is this: it wasn't that people didn't tell them they couldn't do it but they didn't listen, they did it. I'm not the only one on this, there are millions more. If we keep the zeal, we can do it.

KYLEcastus2 Tuesday, October 5, 2010 7:32:26 AM

ok,i know what you say,so try and voice your opinion against the nigerian government,,and you will be killed, this is fact, you want to die?

Prince Universe (Activista)ELHAMEED Tuesday, October 5, 2010 7:35:34 AM

I don't mind dying for the good. I'm already trying though. As i get older, i get tougher. I'm not scared of dying but i'm scared of losing a loved one.

KYLEcastus2 Tuesday, October 5, 2010 7:36:50 AM

you go against a government like yours and friends and family will die,,are you prepared for that?
