E PLURIBUS UNUM

One Among Many, No Better, No Worse, Just A Wayfaring Stranger

Epiphany

Epiphany, I guess I had one the moment I decided to post this on my blog. As far as I know, I had never heard the word until one day I was talking to my daughter on the phone, and she actually used the word in a sentence just as though she used it every day, and I said, "You had a what?" Of course she had to explain the meaning to me, and ever since then I've been looking for a chance to use the word in a conversation with one of my friends, but so far I haven't had the chance, or if I have, I missed it. I'm afraid now, that if I do, they will think I'm just showing off, using a word that I just learned yesterday. I really admire my daughter for expanding her vocabulary, and then having the courage to use it. Of course I've always been proud of all my children, for the many things that they have accomplished. Much more than I ever have, and that is as it should be.

We all have epiphanies throughout our lives. My first was the first time I held my newborn son, lo, these many years ago.

Isn't that, after all, what life is all about?

Good post, Larry.

Many years ago, when I was a young Sailor we had a Division Officer that would post his "word for the day" on his chalk board and each man in the division was required to go in his office, when he was not there, and find out what the word of the day was. We were required to learn to spell the word and use it three times that day. One never knew when he might see you during that day and ask you what the word of the day was. Many of the Sailors thought this was a high school thing and disliked it, but I thought it was something we all could use. I remember one of these “word for the day” offerings was epiphany and even though I can not recall the last time I used the word, I will remember it always.

Thank you Stardancer, I agree. I know I've had many through out my life, I just didn't know the proper name for it until my daughter used it in a conversation we had over the phone. I probably should have learned that word when I was her age.

Hello Edward, nice to hear from you. You know, when I was a young Sailor, (Many years ago), I probably would'nt have liked that either. It was not until much later that I learned to appreciate what I managed to learn in English class. Of course now I wish I had studied more when I was in school. You know what they say about hindsight.

Smart and progressive Division Officer!. We use "epiphany" all the time in my family. My mother has a long love affair with words and she passed that on to her daughters. We use "innapropriate" speech as though it is quite natural and ordinary in our conversations. :D

I used to do that when my oldest daughter was little, I would get her to learn one new word from the dictionary every day and use it in a sentence. Also had her read one article from a newspaper or magazine every day to enrich her vocabulary. I actually had an epiphany the other day myself........

I know what you mean Michelle, I know I could do better in my everyday conversations, but I'm like that other guy. If some one asks, "Could you improve your grammer"? I probably would say, "Huh, you kiddin', what for"?

That's a great idea Claudette, I wish now, that my parents had done something like. I wouldn't have liked it, but I would have been better off for it.
I will not ask you about your epiphany. :D
