E PLURIBUS UNUM

One Among Many, No Better, No Worse, Just A Wayfaring Stranger

A Strange Sound

I got up about seven this morning, feeling a lot better about everything, inspite of the fact that It was already cloudy and threatening to rain. Today being trash pickup day, we had two cans out, which they picked up about eight o'clock.

The wind was blowing pretty hard, so I went out right away to pick them up, and bring them back into the garage so they would not blow away. As I brought the cans back up the driveway, I heard a familiar sound, a sound that you might hear when some one blows accross the mouth of an empty Coke bottle, and my wife and I had been hearing this sound for about four days and nights, and I must say that it sounded kind of spooky in the middle of the night. We thought it had something to do with the furnace, because we only heard it when the furnace was running, until we turned the furnace off, and we still heard it. Then this morning as I was bringing the cans up, I heard it even louder, and it seemed to be coming from the side of the house, and that's where our airconditioner is, so I went to check it, knowing that it is attached to the furnace, even though it's not being used. That's when I noticed the sound was actually coming from the gas meter, which is very close to the airconditioner. The screw on cap was missing from the regulator. I put my thumb over the hole, and the sound stopped. Fortunately, the cap was on the ground right under the meter. I screwed the cap back on, probably saving us a large repair bill. The reason it made the noise when the furnace was off, is because the water heater is also run by gas.

The timeing was just right because tomorrow morning, my wife and I are going to Southern Illinois to be with her daughter and grandchildren over Easter Sunday. I'm taking my laptop, but I don't know how well it will work down there, so I might be MIA for a few days.

Thank you for your support, take care my friends.

HI Michelle, I don't believe it was an actual gas leak, the regulator was just vibrating without the cap being screwd on.
Maybe it doesn't get cold enough to need a furnace there. Isn't the Cape pretty far south?
Thanks Michelle, and have a wonderful Easter.

this is, indeed, why we do not have furnaces or the monsters that lurk within them! (as seen in several strange American films) ha! ha!
May you and Janet have a blessed Easter holiday

Hope you folks have a great trip this Easter season. And thanks for the card for St Patrick’s Day. Those strange sounds will shake you up sometimes. We do not personally have gas out here where we live, even though it is available. I am a little leery of it anyplace where the ground might shake. We have very mild winters here on the coast of South Carolina and do require very little heat in the colder periods of the year.

Hey Michelle, I do know something about those furnace monsters. When I was about seven, we lived in a small two bedroom house, and I had three sisters, so you know where I slept? Yep, you guessed it, in the basement, with the coal burning furnace, and it did make some strange noises in the night, but it really didn't effect me, effect me, effect me...............bwaaahahahahaha! :right:

Thanks Edward, we did have a good trip, it rained like crazy on the way down, but it was sunny all the way home.

You're right about that gas, and I do have a good healthy respect for it, and you know the ground can shake anywhere in the world.
It works really well, but I'm like you, I am a little leery of it too.
Take care, and have a great day.
