E PLURIBUS UNUM

One Among Many, No Better, No Worse, Just A Wayfaring Stranger

This Is What Love Is About

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.

I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.

While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.

The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health.

He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.

As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.

He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.

I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?'

He smiled as he patted my hand and said,

'She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is.'

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought,

'That is the kind of love I want in my life.'

True love is neither physical, nor romantic.

True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.

'Life isn't about how to survive the storm,

but how to dance in the rain.'

A great post, again, Larry.
On dancing in the rain, unconditional love, acceptance and getting old, if you haven't seen it, definitely a fantastic movie : http://www.newline.com/properties/notebookthe.html

Thanks Stardancer, I don't know about dancing in the rain, but when I lived out in Washington State, I enjoyed walking in the rain. I don't do it here in Illinois because of the lightning. It seems every time it rains here, we get thunder and lightning.

Remember "Gene Kelly, Singing in the Rain"? I love that part of the movie.

P.S. All is well here, I pray the same for you.

Thank you Ozmargot, for your comment, and the link. I have seen the movie, and my wife and I both loved it. The story is very much like the one in my post, but I had forgotten about the movie until you sent the link. Thanks again, I've watched the trailer three times now.

I did a little dancin' in the rain today. We had a nice little shower here, at the end of which a rainbow made a valiant effort to appear in the eastern sky. I stood outside in the last sprinkles and watched the very faint rainbow fade in and out, and finally fade completely away. When the rainbow lost its struggle to brilliantly appear, it made me sad. But then I felt grateful that I had seen it all.

Then I splashed in the sprinkles and through the puddles back to my porch.

:sing: "I'm singin' in the rain, just singin' in the rain. What a glorious feelin', I'm happy again..." :sing:

"The Notebook" was lovely, as is this little piece, which I read somewhere before and never forgot. Indeed. "I still know who she is" :smile:Love can take some years to really flourish for some people..but when it does....

wonderful post Larry.

Thank you Michelle, it's good to hear from you again. I hope you are feeling better.

I truly believe that is the kind of love my wife and I have for each other.
I'm thinking back to last November when she had the stroke, and how close I came to losing her.

"Gene Kelly, Singing in the Rain"? "The Notebook"?
Help me! I am turning into a softy. Heck, maybe I always was.

 Yeah, I think so. Me too, it's not a bad thing, even Clint Eastwood had a soft spot. At least I think he did.

LOL Tell me it's not so!

As "Dirty Harry", No. As in, "The Good The Bad, and the Ugly", NO! But in the "Bridges of Madison County" ???? Maybe you didn't watch that one, too lovey dovey, but I watched it mostly for Meril Streep, and I would do it again.

Darn, caught me. Watched it too.

Clint sang in "Paint Your Wagon." Honest. He really did.

I watched "Paint Your Wagon" years ago, but don't remember the singing, or maybe I just subconsciously blanked that part out of my memory.

Oh, my. Wish I could do that.

I'm serious, I don't remember Clint singing in that movie. Of course there is a lot I don't remember about that movie. It's gotta be at least 20 years ago that I watched it, and you know how us senior citizens get sometimes. :left: :right:
