I'd like to briefly review the latest album by Miranda!, an Argentinian pop group. While they may not be widely known to English-speaking audiences... well, it's my blog and I can do whatever I want!
First, some general thoughts:
Compared to previous albums, this one is not as strong.
It maintains the excellent sound quality reached in their last album (El disco de tu corazón).
Most songs now have a less electronic feel.
Most songs deal with lost love, and are rather sad as a result.
Lyrically, there are several nice lines mixed with some less polished ones.
Ale Sergi (the lead singer) now sings in a lower voice in most songs.
Songs lack a "break", or an "explosion": they are rather flat and could use some more dynamics.
Song by song:
Mentía: addictive, fast, a very well crafted dance number. It reminds this old listener of past hits, at least in terms of beat and rhythm. Instantly enjoyable. Lyrically, it is a well written description of the difficulty of letting go after losing someone you love, although with a couple of tongue-in-cheek moments.
Lo que siento por tí: the bass pounds constantly during the song, it gives it a very uplifting feel. Nicely sung, melodically appealing. The background vocals (Es amor, es amor - it's love, it's love) work wonderfully.
Romance juvenil: this one starts with a screeching synth sound that might make you cringe, but wait -I think this is the best song in the album. Nice voices and a lovely melody make this number another sure hit.
El showcito: pervy lyrics and a dance groove. Maybe influenced by Michael Jackson or other 80's dance numbers. Great fun, and another probable single.
Tu mirada: I find this the first low point. A bit repetitive and boring, with few melodic variations. The lyrics are beatiful though.
Tu misterioso alguien: great song.
Si pudiera volver: I couldn't remember this song, so I had to listen to it again to write this. No wonder why I had forgotten about it. Not bad, but not great.
No lo digas: I didn't like the voice at the beginning of the song, but it then picks up quickly. Great lyrics about hoping to have one last night of love to remember, and not just a painful breakup. Not very plausible, but a nice fantasy nonetheless.
Entre mis brazos: I didn't like this one as far as music is concerned. Lyrically, it's not as depressing as the rest, although it's a bit simplistic repetitive.
Hola probando: I like the music and how well it is sung.
I think Miranda now needs to take their act to another level, by trying to be a bit more daring in terms of composition. Most songs on this album sounds as though they could be sung by football supporters during a match. Although not necessarily a bad thing, as this shows how catchy they are, having several such numbers tells you something about a growing lack of creativity.
Maybe their intention is to reach a wider audience... using less electronic instruments, singing in a lower voice, and reducing the number of dance tunes seem to point in that direction.
