Album Review: Night Work - Scissor Sisters

Lately I have been listening to a lot of music I had never paid attention to. Giving it a chance, so to speak. Queen was my first love, and as all first loves, it's the strongest. I guess that having suffered a little in my personal life made me more open to new things, I don't know. Well, I decided to download a few albums by Muse (who are often compared to Queen) and Scissor Sisters (erm, I really liked the single I Don't Feel Like Dancin' a few years back
). I tried to like Muse, I listened to several of their albums many times, but it was never really enjoyable. If I had to recommend one of their albums, It'd be Black Holes and Revelations. Maybe it's mainstream, OK, but it was the only one who I really enjoyed. Scissor Sisters was a completely different story: it was love at first listen.
Summing up, I like Queen, Scissor Sisters, Miranda!, and Mecano. I know what you're thinking.

No, I'm not gay
. I just happened to love the Sisters' debut album. Great melodies, clever lyrics, infectious rhythm, and a lot of energy. Apart from I Don't Feel Like Dancin', I didn't like their second (Ta-Dah) as much as the first. However, I knew they had a lot of potential, and I was expecting their third album anxiously.THE REVIEW
All in all, I really like this album. Although their latest songs are not as good as their early ones, I'd say they are better than the ones in Ta-Dah.
1. Night Work: If you don't want to dance to this, you must be dead. Pure fun. It reminds me of Olivia Newton-John, and that's a good thing!
2. Whole New Way: OK song. According to some people, it has a very straightforward sexual interpretation. It's about something nobody had ever written about (look it up!)
3. Fire with Fire: I really loved this song when I first heard it, no wonder it was the first single. The lyrics are a bit repetitive and vague, but the melody is fantastic, and it's sung with passion. Great contrast between quiet and loud moments. It reminds me of U2. I find the single version to be superior to the album version, because it is a bit shorter and more 'concentrated.'
4. Any Which Way: Nice dance tune, excellent bassline, a lot of energy. Ana (the girl in the band) does a spoken part which doesn't sound too hot to me. The live version with Kylie Minogue was much better.
5. Harder You Get: I didn't enjoy this song much. Weak melody. The lyrics are a bit obscure, but I suppose they may conceal some redeeming points.
6. Running Out: This immediately reminded me of Devo, probably because of the way it's sung and played. Nice dance song, but definitely not the best in the album.
7. Something Like This: This one grew on me. Repetitive but hypnotic.
8. Skin This Cat: Sparse instrumentation, minimalistic sounding overall. This may be the best of Ana's vocal contributions to date. Actually, it's one of the few parts in which she can be heard at all!
9. Skin Tight: Lovely melody, good rhythm. Jake sings this one beautifully. I think the lyrics have several sexual references, but I'm mostly paying attention to the music. Another high point.
10. Sex and Violence: I adore this song. Jake shows he doesn't only sing in falsetto. Dark music, dark lyrics, driving beat.
11. Nightlife: Good lyrics, but I don't find the music especially memorable.
12. Invisible Light: The last song, and one of the best. Again, the lyrics do not make perfect sense, but they refer to nightlife and fun as most of the album, although from a rather glum point of view. Long and with great dynamics: I can picture this being a smash hit in clubs. Lovely collaboration by Ian McKellen.
In short, six strong songs plus six weaker ones. And since the latter are only weak by comparison, I can wholeheartedly recommend this album, especially if you like dance music. I'll try to pay more attention to the lyrics from now on, as this band has generally produced good material in this area.
Let me know what you think!
