Alizée - Une Enfant du Siecle - Review

, , , ,

What's happening to me is odd. I'm totally, hopelessly, hooked. I had seen a video of hers several years ago, and thought, 'hm, cute girl...' and then forgot all about her. Now I watched a video again and I can't stop listening to her music.
Of course, the first thing that attracted me was the way she looked. I don't want to attempt to describe her, see for yourselves...

My jaw hit the floor. I guess you could call it love at first sight. So, at first, I mainly focused on the videos and I mostly ignored the music. After a while, I decided to just listen to her albums. What a surprise. I'm partial to pop music, and many of her songs were appealing to me. Mind you, she only sings the songs, other people write and produce them, but when I like something, I don't really mind who made it.

She has four albums: Gourmandises, Mes Courants Electriques, Psychedelices, and Une Enfant Du Siecle. I donwnloaded all four albums at once (I know, I know) and it took me a while to find my favorite. Now I have it. I'm completely addicted to UEDS.

Une Enfant Du Siecle

First of all, let me tell you that I know very little French, and I use translations from websites such as alizee-reflections.net to get a better idea of what she's singing about. In spite of this, I can still feel the atmosphere transmitted by the songs through the music and vocal lines. It's a sombre album, but one which is capable of making me feel sad or happy in a second.

It's a concept album of sorts about Edie Sedgwick, one of Andy Warhol's muses. After reading the lyrics and listening to the music, I've noticed that some songs reference her life more clearly than others.

up Best tracks in my opinion:

Eden Eden: haunting melody, beautiful soft voice, strange lyrics that make my mind evoke surreal landscapes and emotions.
Grand Central: upbeat, fun melody. Playful changes of pace.
Les Collines: the one you can actually dance to. A bit repetitive but really catchy. Those Ohhs are priceless.
Un Coeur Fendre: My favourite. A lovely, fast, and catchy tune with clever and moving lyrics. The last line just stuns me.

The whole album is really nice to listen to in the background, as it is generally soft and tracks 'connect' to each other seamlessly.

I *really* want to get the original CD. It doesn't feel right to listen to something I like so much without somehow acknowledging the artist and her team's efforts. I might end up ordering it from France or somewhere, but I'll get it somehow.

I might be going crazy about all this... but to judge from many fan websites, I'm not alone. lol

I'd be glad to hear your opinions.
