It's just life

So why get all worked up about it?

Playing with our logo

I was asked to fix some issues with logo clipping on the My Opera banners and buttons page a couple of days ago (the shadow had been cropped) and realized that I couldn't possibly go to work on fixing something that nasty. No offense to whoever came up with our 3d logo, but it's something of a disaster. Our community realized this a long time ago and has pusblished detailed critiques of its flaws - the legendary shadow highlights being among the...err...highlights.

So anyway, it was difficult for me to "fix" that thing without trying to do it up a little, so I went to work on a new one. I cooked up an alternative in Cinema 4d (the demo version...we're considering getting this app for future graphics work)

Now, granted, there is nothing spectacularly new here, but at least it looks slicker and more natural. A logo change is a pretty big step, however, and we are in fact very seriously considering changing our brand entirely, so this logo may never see the light of day. But I think it's a significant improvement over our current one.

Makes you wanna lick it. :D P:

Yeah it's better! Did you design the O?

...

Nice big textarea here to leave a long comment.

EivindFS 20. October 2005, 08:25

Yes, I did the new O. It's just a re-rendering of the old one however, so I can't lay claim to having designed it. And to be honest, I wouldn't want to

SerbianFighter 26. December 2005, 15:38

Hehe.. that shadow corp was reported by me
Not bad re-render, however it is too dark red for my taste, needs more shine....
I made this one a while ago.. nothing special, not to proud of it but people seem to like it becuase of that crystal shine ..

EivindFS 29. December 2005, 09:34

I have seen that one, SerbianFighter, and it is a very nice image, but I have second thoughts about its applicability as a logo. What you have there is a wallpaper design with reflections, dropshadows etc. A logo will be on a white background without any reflections. I would be interested to see how it looks then, could you make a version like that?

Any input is welcome; the branding process is something we will focus intensely on in the immediate future.

Thanks

I posted white one with no shadows or anything here, sometime ago...
It was just an idea, nothing special.. it was just one idea in which direction Opera should consider changing the logo
Imho this or this are much better choice since i really believe that Opera must show with its icon that it is a browser or in any way internet related program...
Anyhow... thats all for now since it is newyears and I don't want to waste your time
I can try writing more about this topic if you want me to

Hi EivindFS, the logo is clear categorical improvement. It does appear a bit murky and dark, and not so crisp but I assume that is a technical issue with lighting / resolution output etc. What is the font btw?

Good luck with the rebranding!

Jakub81 10. January 2006, 22:19

Logo doesn't really need all the highlights, shadows, gradients IMO.

EivindFS 11. January 2006, 14:48

Jakub, I agree with you 100%. Things are finally happening around here and I can absolutely guarantee that all shadows are history. The glossy 3d look will also hopefully disappear. We will see what comes out of this process.

SerbianFighter 12. January 2006, 19:23

Whatever does happen I just hope that asap this current logo and icon will be history...

EivindFS 13. January 2006, 13:24

ASAP indeed. However, ASAP may not be as fast as everyone'd like. This is a big-ass process. Much bigger than creating some graphics. But the wheels are turning

SerbianFighter 13. January 2006, 21:11

Well it is a very serious and very delicate matter. Once changed there is no turning back... I really (and you might find me a bit arrogant) think that Opera has nothing to lose, but still this should be played well to get as much attention as possible and to supersize results

EivindFS 16. January 2006, 10:45

What can I say, we are and will keep doing our best  We're very serious about this!

Can you write icon files of the new logo? I want to use it in place of my regular opera logo that comes with the browser... And when I used Opera 8.53 in 256 color mode, the logo looked VERY ugly... I checked the file and it SEEMS that there is no 256 color icon set in there, only a 32bit icon set... I would love to see this icon set optimized for all color resolutions... EXCEPT monocrome!

EivindFS 31. March 2006, 07:52

Pharaoh, this is not the new logo - just something I quickly produced to see how much better I could make it look. A "real" new logo is on the way and I will therefore not spend any more time with this one. Thank you for your interest though.

Pharaoh_Atem 31. March 2006, 23:10

Maybe the new logo will be included in the Opera 9 browser? Or is it just going to occur the same way Intel's did, silently?

drlaunch 3. July 2006, 17:11

While I'm waiting for the new logo I've made good use of the alternative here. I took the liberty to make a transparent PNG without a shadow for my own personal use and I put it in ObjectDock. Unfortunately it's not perfect and suffers from the "Magic wand" syndrome. I have some ugly white dots remaining around the edges due to me not being skilled enough.
And due to problems converting it to .ico I get some nasty black outlines if I try to set it as a program icon for Opera.
I know this is a little much to ask of you but could you post a proper transparent PNG and a proper .ico file of it?
If not I guess I'll wait until the new logo is ready.

Still reads as zero. Bad Feng-Shui...

vladimirg 10. May 2009, 09:03

The fixed version looks to me like the O is a part of a spherical surface, not a flat one
