Life with Linux pt. 1

There's two ways to get in the pool. One is to get in slowly while adjusting to the water. The other way is to jump right in, I jumped right in. My closer friends will tell you I've been fighting an uphill struggle against this operating system, and I think I've got it right finally. My computer doesn't crash any more like it used to, though it's still prone to when the memory gets overloaded. Now for my initial impressions.
Linux is fuckin hard. In windows everything was laid out for you. You had my computer whcih monitored all your stuff, you had the C drive with it's different preset folders to put everything. In linux there is only one default folder, and it's name is "/" pronounced "root". You have to make everything else.
Aside from that, linux has another problem, fuckin hippies make it. These hippies in particular are against anything not deemed free software. They loathe large corporations and are even against Opera. In my opininion opera has gained much traction because it doesn't have fuckin google or microsoft behind it, but that's another story. I hate hippies, but I love linux, god I'm torn. Also because of these hippies, mp3s, the most common music format, cannot be played within linux. Linux.
Next time I'll talk about productivity apps.

Linux and anything else is exactly that, triying to drive a car by just watching other people driving could be potentially hard to do it.
I used to see computer classes (with windows) and for many people I met, computer were fucking hard. (By computers of course they were talking about windows).

Unless you are using linux from scratch, most linux distributions have everything set up for you including a /home/<you> folder which will be a life savers in the future, specially when upgrading/installing new distributions.
Aside for the philosophy that the ones that make this OS or their particular believes there are legal matters why you can't distribute commercial software. For example if you read the opera license, even thought is free to download and use is prohibited to re-distribute the software without the consent of Opera Inc. This makes it that even if you could distribute Opera, Opera Inc could change heart and your distro will be fucked.
Even worst is the case with the mp3 formats where you need to pay royalties to the patente holder to distribute codecs to process this files. If you make an OS that is 'free' you can't really pay someone else rights. Even Microsoft needs to pay in order to distribute mp3 capabilities on their Operating systems.
So yeah, in part is because they are hippies, in part is because they dont want to jail. Unfortunatly end users are a big ignorant about software and patent law and how does it impact software, but once you face the mess of the US legal system related to either software or content, is like getting a big reality check.

I dont know how one can think linux will be mainstream...like just installing music and video codecs it beyond most mircroserfs capabilities

Last I heard OSX doesn't come with WMV-WMA codec support nor Windows come with XVID-Quicktime-AAC support.
