Ubuntu 8.04 on a compaq F763NR PART 3

,

I had a few hangs when running the ZD1211 and AR5007 simultaneously.

WPA seems to be an issue. I want connections as seamless as my ath interface in freebsd.

Configure the supplicant crap and you're done.

Not so in ubuntu's graphical configuration tools.

I only had seamless connections when I replaced the FON with an open DLINK POS.

Anyway, I dont have the patience to sort this all out now so the father-in-law is in vista and perfectly content with content with Firefox 3 and the 3 bookmarks I've added.

Maybe the next time they go on a trip I'll update and try it again.

:-(

If I have spare time I'll be trying to build comixwall again and moving from a macbook pro to a 2.4Ghz Imac on leopard. I'm not looking forward to the bloat and stupid visual effects in 10.5 but my mbp is getting dated.

Ubuntu 8.04 on a compaq F763NR PART 2

Saturday I was able to get the notebook hardwired.

After running updates I installed nvidia drivers via the "Hardware Drivers" utility.

Now X looks perfect.

Today my zd1211 based airlink usb 802.11g device can connect to my FON access point. Maybe there was a patch in the updates.

Hong installed flash in firefox and now my father-in-law can read SINA until he needs a nap.

The only thing left for me to fix is the lack of ar5007 support.

I tried moving the hardware switch but the light stays amber.

I've found two disappointments. My in-laws use skype and there's no AMD64 build. I've always wanted to convert them to gizmo project but there are no AMD64 builds of gizmo5.

:-(

I actually have more choice of software on my E51.

This afternoon I found instructions to get the AR5007 up.

I was able to make one successful connection to my WPA encrypted FON

The network manager interface in ubuntu is a nightmare. I can save a location but it's never set. scselect on Mac OS X is much better.

Every time I reboot it connects to the FON's open network.

at least now I"m down to one annoyance

Experiment: Ubuntu 8.04 on a compaq F763NR

My 77 year old father-in-law has recently taken to reading online news on an old 800Mhz dell with a tiny screen.

For his birthday we picked up a possibly refurbed HP/compaq notebook.

These are my notes on our experience.

1st night. I called for the recovery media knowing I could do it myself but support insists I make my own recovery media. I start the wizard... and it takes a really long time to ask for a blank.

Friday. Hong finished burning the restore DVDs. I installed ubuntu 8.04 which was painless.

And now the problems begin.

Atheros AR5007 will not connect to my FON
GeForce 7000M is not working with X

ethernet cant pass any traffic through my mac.

Every other device I've ever patched directly into my mac has gone right through.
I can ssh into my mac from ubuntu but that's it. irritating!

Saturday I am going to try two things.

Look at this
http://madwifi.org/ticket/1679
and try some random nvidia garbage I downloaded
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.05-pkg2.run

I doubt I will be able to abandon FreeBSD for Ubuntu but for family members its ease of use is perfect.
