Travelin' Light

True Life Confessions of a Chocoholic

Candy bars are now child's play- I have taken my idolatry of chocolate to a whole new level. I feel lightheaded, giddy, good-humored, peaceful-yet-energized. How did I do it? A square of unsweetened baking chocolate, that's how. I've become like one of those grim purists who prefer their coffee black- I find that without sugar the flavor of the chocolate is less corrupted. It tastes like its color. It is bitter like tree bark, sour and earthy. It makes me think of coffee and soil and green leaves and blue sky. It is like standing beside a smiling person in the sunshine, laughing and feeling the sun on the backs of my hands...
I have had too much chocolate I think! There is still a small chunk on my desk, sizeable enough to be seductive, but small enough to seem like an innocent indulgence. It sits within inches of my hand, coyly shrugging the paper wrapper from its dark shoulders. Dare I? The desklamp's golden light melts into its skin... No! No, I mustn't! I should save some for the morning. It will be easier to get out of bed that way. Better to take it easy anyhow. Probably won't sleep well tonight as it is. Well, there's always The Plague to finish....

Pure torture, that pic is.

...the aftermath

Well, I didn't wait until the morning. I devoured the rest of the chocolate after I finished the post last night. Today I have a very bad headache. Coinicidence? I think not.

That's a miserable price to pay! Hope you feel better soon. smile

There are worse hangovers to have...

As a connoisseur of hangovers, I am inclined to agree with earlax. Thank you for your concerns- after a few hours of sitting completely still with a cold vinegar compress on my face/head, I have recovered. It was rather a stiff price to pay. Overindulgence is like buying something with a credit card- you always pay later, and more than you reckoned on.

I prefer dark, but milk chocolate's good for bingeing. I'm trying to eliminate refined sugars from my diet.

Unsweetened? Oh my. I'm considered the chocolate fiend in my family, but unsweetened chocolate is a bit too far for me, most of the time. My wife actually bought me a "100% pure arriba cacao" bar some time ago. I've had a couple of squares of it, but it's been around a while and I haven't finished it.

On the other hand, I expect I'll like this one quite a lot. On some rainy day.

Ooooh! Chocolate and chiles is a good combination, second only to chocolate and cinnamon, in my opinion. Another of my opinions: there is a difference between chocolate and candy- candy is made with milk and sugar and is for babies.

That being said, I ate some chocolate chips today, the milk chocolate kind, and the rich, creamy sweetness took me by surprise.

Chocolate and coffee on one end - sugar at the other end. And *never* mix the two ends! (if it were for me, we could also completely drop sugar for, say, honey...)

There's a bar in central Madrid, Spain, renowned for its pure hot chocolate drinks. When I was there, back in September, we went along and ordered ourselves up a cup of the liquid black gold. The chocolate bar (no pun intended) is called "Valor" and if you mention that name to any Spaniard they will nod approvingly. The chocolate brand name "Valor" is a long established and delicious (pun intended) name & product. The usual custom is to order up a ration of hot just-fried churros (I'll leave you to google that word) and dip them into the cup of chocolate and then....moments of absolute 'yumminess'.

Oh, I love hot chocolate. That sounds like I treat I could become addicted to with ease!
