I read blogs for a living

And I think I like it

21 days

,

21 days

People say it takes twenty-one days from the time you begin until it has become a routine. Not "Learn C++ in 21 days" kind of thingy — more like get up every day at 6:30 AM (I usually get up around 9:00 AM), stop drinking coffee (I drink a lot of coffee), do 200 sit-ups before breakfast (no comment...), etc. Well, after given it very little thought, I've decided to put this myth to a test. I just need something to do, and that's where you come in: Give me something to do for twenty-one days.

I'll use my blog as a diary during the attempt and post a summary when I'm done. I'm very eager to get started as I have a lot of questions related to this... How long does it take to break a new routine? Will I notice a difference if I suddenly stop and don't do "it" anymore? Hopefully I'll be able to answer some when I'm done.

So, anyone got something for me?

Stop smoking, drinking coffee and doing exercise would be obvious choices..
So I'm gonna go with saying every third word a octave higher than the others.. wanna see if that sticks? :D

Espen André Øverdahl 25. September 2007, 09:48

I don't smoke. I exercise 2-3 times a week. I guess I can stop drinking coffee, but I want something a bit more exotic.

Hit every word an octave higher than the others? Hm, no. P: +1 for originality though!

Cois 25. September 2007, 09:56

:D it was worth a shot..

Stomyr 25. September 2007, 10:35

Don't use any computer - XD

(Now that would be exotic - XD)

Stomyr 25. September 2007, 10:36

I did it once - I hold it for 3 moths... XD

Matt Cox 25. September 2007, 12:04

With Epsen working with computers on a daily basis, I dont think he could do that. It would be largely unproductive; though could blog about his experience using Opera Mini.

I think you should start drinking. Become an alcoholic; aim to drink at least 2 pints each night for 21 days. A night cap, if you will.

Stomyr 25. September 2007, 12:07

XD

Conny 25. September 2007, 12:08

Hm. Just let me think about it and post later...

Espen André Øverdahl 25. September 2007, 12:09

Maybe I should start drinking...

Stomyr 25. September 2007, 12:09

Naww....
Don't do that

DrLaunch 25. September 2007, 12:32

Mythbusters - My Opera Edition.

How about turning off the light when leaving a room?

Espen André Øverdahl 25. September 2007, 12:38

I already do that DrLaunch. I don't think I should start drinking either. Need more suggestions!

Stomyr 25. September 2007, 12:52

XD

Stomyr 25. September 2007, 12:53

hmmmm....
Donate to the poor?

Espen André Øverdahl 25. September 2007, 12:58

Make donations to the poor into a routine? No, don't think so. Once in a while is already enough.

Stomyr 25. September 2007, 13:02

Read a short story every day.

Matt Cox 25. September 2007, 13:18

Wank. Vigorously.

No need to blog about it, though.

Varish 25. September 2007, 13:45

:worried: Don't start drinking ... How about this one ... Try getting up early in the morning say 5:30 am or 6:00 am & go for jogging or a walk everyday for 21 days & then see if it becomes a habit

Espen André Øverdahl 25. September 2007, 15:21

Coxy's suggestion is somewhat disturbing, yet I am intrigued...

varish: Your suggestion is good, but not nearly as destructive as I want it to be.

It has to be something different... Anyone read "The Dice Man"? P:

Remco Lanting 25. September 2007, 15:25

  • Suit up!
  • Wear a tie to work
  • Leave your desk all clean and tidy at the end of the working day. Even help others do the same
  • Blog atleast two times a day
  • Be nice to everyone, all the time
  • Don't point out the bad, point out the good
  • Spank the monkeys everytime you feel like it
  • Only eat healty food
  • If you're getting something to drink (coffee?) always ask if people near you want some too
Combinations are possible too of course :D

Matt Cox 25. September 2007, 15:33

Espen... so long as it's feasible, I'll do the same thing as what you end up choosing and also blog about it. Not a competition or anything - just see how our experiences differ. It could be interesting.

It'll be the new 365.

Stomyr 25. September 2007, 15:47

XD

Christopher DaSilva 25. September 2007, 19:03

Wank vigorously, haha! I can't believe someone had the same suggestion as me P:

Mick-E 25. September 2007, 19:43

Learn to juggle

Ramūnas 25. September 2007, 20:21

As Remco said: Suit up!

Matt Cox 25. September 2007, 20:36

Psh, not suit up. It feels really ghey when you walk into work wearing posh clothes and you're not required to. Everyone else around you is staring at you in their casual clothes.

Christopher DaSilva 25. September 2007, 21:00

True.

DrLaunch 25. September 2007, 22:01

How about making a new dish for dinner every day for 21 days? And the dish can't be something you have had the last 21 days. :chef:

Cois 26. September 2007, 00:36

Go to gay clubs! Now there's an idea.. see if someone can make a habit of it.. :D Blue Oyster.. see Espenao come..

Christopher DaSilva 26. September 2007, 00:38

 I dunno if he'll go for painful habits :right:

Cois 26. September 2007, 00:53

HmmMmm Experience is strong in this one... many things he has seen..

DrLaunch 26. September 2007, 09:53

Are you speaking of experience, dannii?

Espen André Øverdahl 26. September 2007, 10:07

Most likely things to do for 21 days

Community suggests:

- Wear a tie to work
- Blog at least two times a day

Espen suggests:

- Don't write text messages or make any outgoing calls from my mobile phone (in fact; try not to use my mobile phone at all)
- Stop using hair products
- Stop shaving (I've started to get a tiny bit of beard)

That's what I can think of atm.

Matt Cox 26. September 2007, 10:19

Haha. Baby-faced Espen, don't kid yourself - you couldn't grow a beard even if you tried. P:

I'll back out of said challenges purely because I think I've took it upon myself anyway to blog daily.

Espen André Øverdahl 26. September 2007, 15:28

Damn you Coxy! I can grow a beard anytime I want.

Good luck blogging daily!

Christopher DaSilva 26. September 2007, 16:59

No, erm... Someone else's experience... yeah... :right:

Espen, grow a beard and take a picture everyday to see how it grows... Nah, that wouldn't be funny...

Stop using hair products? *slaps Espen* BLASPHEMY!

p:

Varish 27. September 2007, 02:55

So finally what have you decided to do for 21 days ?

Ramūnas 27. September 2007, 05:46

I really think this 21 day thing works, I just noticed that I got used to getting up at 8.30, and now that I have to get up at 9.30, I still end up getting up at 8.30, because I just can't sleep any more.

Cois 27. September 2007, 08:41

Hmmm... time... how about posting a few comments every day, at the same time every day and seeing if your internal clock would automatically be set after 21 days.. after typing that out it all sounds stupid now.. p:

Kimberly 27. September 2007, 16:36

ok, since you work with computers on a daily basis, try this:

write down ONE thing every day for 21 days, that totally IRKS you about a computer, and explain WHY that one thing irked you enough to write about it.

Christopher DaSilva 27. September 2007, 18:03

Wow, that sounds cool.

Kimberly 27. September 2007, 18:37

ty

Espen André Øverdahl 27. September 2007, 18:57

Man, if I wrote down everything that annoyed me about my computer I would've flipped. Besides, I think life is too short to be annoyed at things that you can do something with.

It's hard to pick a thing to do for 21 days... But, I promise to have something to do by the end of this weekend.

Christopher DaSilva 27. September 2007, 19:03

I take your word. I'll be checking this post by the end of the week

DrLaunch 27. September 2007, 19:31

I got a suggestion. Just to put this myth to a real test, try using another browser for 21 days. I'm pretty sure it's going to be difficult.

Christopher DaSilva 27. September 2007, 20:32

Kimberly 28. September 2007, 00:24

i didn't say EVERYTHING that irks you about a computer

I SAID ONE THING, EVERY DAY for 21 days

there is a difference

.ed 28. September 2007, 04:43

skype told me today is your birthday.

whatever you end up doing, let me know, i want to do this 21 days thing.

Conny 28. September 2007, 04:45

Espen has birthday today? ... :eyes:

Kimberly 28. September 2007, 05:39

well, if he does...then happy bday
