Poverty

Today is the annual "Blog Action Day". Like last year, we worked together with the organizers to make sure the My Opera community would be involved.
The theme for this year is poverty and I want to discuss this in light of the current financial crisis. I think many have heard of Iceland and its complete collapse of its economy? Wow. They've taken a beating. The reason? Well, the debts of its banks are many times its annual gross domestic product of 14 billion euros. So, what happens when developed countries hit rock bottom (financial wise)? Import comes to a halt. People start saving instead of spending. There's no cash flow.
In every developed country there are many people living below the poverty threshold, and there can be many, many, more. Those are the ones I keep in mind on a day like this. Those who have lost everything.
I think what what Richard says is pretty accurate: "And I gasped and was amazed. So much money lost. Swept back four years in terms of household wealth. But you know what? It doesn't really matter. It's all on paper. Makes no difference at all to my current life. By the time I really need it, ten or fifteen years from now, things will be very different."

I'd love to see them spend time on the streets, not knowing when the next meal will be.

I tried to see this theme (poverty) in light of contemporary (fail) systematic happenings in the world economy and how this affects a developed country.

I've spent a little time on the streets in my life and it took a hell of a lot of effort, and even more help from friends to set me straight again. People don't appreciate that it's not just a roof over your head that you're missing out on, it's security and self respect. Nothing and nowhere is truly safe.
Trying to narrow the entirity of events that can be classified as poverty down into a solvable problem is something no-one can do, hence so many people saying they don't know what to write on the subject. Each person has a different view, and a different lifetime of experiences behind them. So while this day may raise awareness, I doubt it will provide any workable answers. My own experience says that the majority of people writing these posts are doing so to gain extra hits to their pages, and they'll happily ignore the next homeless person they pretend not to see.

"my evil stepmother in law to be believes that all homeless people choose to be homeless and could easily go back to their regular lives."
Maybe she lives in a fairytale...

And don't give a toss as to what is in their own backyard!
Talk is cheap. Ignorant hypocrisy rules in many homes!
Down here we have electric fences to keep livestock from wandering. I recommend ya throw one around said inlaws property,..Mik...Suntana..
Aside from the fact i have been unable to post from my blog for a few days, it has given me the opportunity to read what people see and feel about the subject of poverty. I enjoyed Mik's post, from his personal experience.
I too understand what it is like to be on the other side of the tracks.
People that have not had to deal with the desperation inflicted by poverty, have little to 'no' empathy on the subject.
It's a sad sad day when we donot help our own!
As an only child brought-up by my solo mother..bless her..we had things tuff most of the time.
Neighbours would come by with a meal fequently for us. My mother would cry.
And i have never forgotten this. Tonight i will cook a feast for my family. As usual part of this meal will go to my neighbour, she is a solo mother with 4, yes, 4 boys under 11 years. Many goons would say it is her fault or, where's the father! Nothing about the latter helps this woman and her children.
Love and respect DOES! Dignity is a strange and weird phenomenon to those that are poor. The few that restore a sense of dignity should receive a Queens commendation! It is extremely difficult to restore dignity that has been lost due to poverty.
Aint no love in the city!
Thanks for the post Espen..

Iceland what a place, it don't have to go pair shaped,, the methane thing just excellent, why isn't every where following Iceland and getting these systems in place and saving the environment and cash. Oh hold on we got Gas oil coal and and all the bombs to make it so or maybe Iceland don't play the game ;)
And no I'm not to bothered bout cash flow apart from mine at the moment! If they really needed extra cash why cant Governments clean up the money markets and take out all the trillions of dollars in illegal drugs money that they know about or what they spend on arms or spinning fears and making more complicated and difficult issues.......
Act2B what ever!
