I read blogs for a living

And I think I like it

Weblog awards

, , ,

My Opera is one of the finalists in the "Weblog awards" for "Best Online Community". I had never heard of it before, but apparently they are pretty big (500,000 votes cast in 2007 (source)). I had my doubts promoting it too much because other finalists in the award ceremony include communities such as "Jennifer Marohasy" (huh?), "Michael Jackson Fan Forum" (hm...), and so on.

Anyway, at the moment I'm pretty excited because My Opera might win! We've never been nominated to anything before, so it feels good to be acknowledged at least.

This is my plea to you: Vote My Opera!

Now in second position.

I was wondering about the quality of the competition (Jennifer Marohasy is a single Wordpress blog with multiple authors for example) myself. Seems like the big communities have been kept out of it or find it beneath their notice. Either way, all publicity is good publicity.

@Furie: Yes, my thoughts exactly. Not sure why the big boys have been left out. Maybe they're too corporate, while My Opera feels more "independent"?

Not sure, tbh.

Member numbers are around 2 million here, 5 million on Wordpress so not all that much difference. You'd think this place would be in that sort of competition not up against the baby communities.

Since the introduction of social networking features we seem to be acquiring some of the problems that the big sites have, which have begun to nullify the friendly neighbourhood feel this place had when I arrived (this can also be blamed on me settling down here). And the OC was originally designed to allow Opera browser users to get help so it's still got a perceived corporate background to it.

I just can't figure out how we got included in this competition. Anyway enough of my mildly psychotic ramblings, on with the slaughter of smaller communities.

I still see My Opera as the home of Opera users, but it has expanded rapidly. There are many who use My Opera just for the blogging service (who are not fan of the browser), which I think is great.

We got included through Postman Pechkin who nominated My Opera and I guess "they" (Weblog awards) felt we were a good match?

Furie 9. January 2009, 16:20

Ah, a nomination affair then. That makes a bit more sense.
