My Opera is closing 1st of March

I read blogs for a living

And I think I like it

Facebook sucks

I've tried to like it. I've tried to be "active", but it blows so hard that I cancelled my account for the 2nd time today (I tried it for the first time summer year and a half ago).

When I tried to deactivate my account it said:

Are you deactivating because you are concerned about Facebook's Terms of Service? This was a mistake that we have now corrected.

WTF? Fail. I don't understand why people use FB or how it became popular in the first place.

Comments bananza!Good morning

LOL, I use Facebook as a 'real life' internet site. Got many co-workers and stuff.

I like it, because it's cute. faint
Yep, it's all about the blue colour. wink

But I don't like apps, MySpace has apps too, and they force you to invite people, and they don't do anything productive! There's only one, that's a calendar app and you can share appointments and stuff, other than that it's just bs.

I'm never too active on FB.

I hate it too! \o/

Espen André ØverdahlEspenAO Tuesday, March 10, 2009 12:42:03 PM

I prefer LinkedIn for my professional network. smile

Facebook is just way too much drama and it feels like I have no control of my own content. Nasty stuff.

Never been on Facebook.I love MyOpera,it works on my phone.I have great friends here.happy

When it comes to choosing a network (whether it's social, professional, bla bla) I have a strong dilemma: Should I go for popularity or style/coolness?
Sometimes I tend to go for more chic/elite sites (sites that not everyone knows) with a nice amount of users but not ridiculously huge rolleyes
And sometimes I go for the hip ones, with the most people. (MySpace)

FB used to be a networking site for students, then it become what is today: A total mess.

KYrenKYren Tuesday, March 10, 2009 1:04:59 PM

Hi Dan.bigsmile

Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvlidrlaunch Tuesday, March 10, 2009 1:18:26 PM

I don't use Facebook much. All I do is to import content from my other social sites and see my friends updates. The reason why I haven't ditched it is because my friends haven't discovered the benefit of being a member of other social networks.

slackwrdave Tuesday, March 10, 2009 1:32:19 PM

Take a look at hi5.com sometime. Totally kindergarten. yuck

mistressEVILmissevilat Tuesday, March 10, 2009 1:37:58 PM

I hate Facebook too. It's a mess!
"Home page" is flooded with apps and you miss important stuff.
"Only friends" by default... right, and how am i to know if that's the person i'm looking for without adding to friends?
blah.

KarenNerak Tuesday, March 10, 2009 1:49:30 PM

I can't agree more about the suckage factor. I had it about a year ago...got sick & flippin' tired of all the lame-ass applications, so said, "Screw this!" and deleted my account.

Well, over the past week I've had a couple people coming on pretty strong with the, "Please join me over there!" thing, so I decided to try again. bigeyes

The difference is that this time I have made it crystal clear that I will refuse any & all applications, so people aren't throwing sheep at me or whatever. I've found my best friend from High School, so that's one good thing.

Oddly, I was going to look for you over there today, Espen, but I guess I'll save my time! lol I totally understand your issues, though. The place blows more ass than Jenna Jameson at a porno festival! down

I use Facebook to spy on my friends! devil

Mad Scientist (عادل)qlue Tuesday, March 10, 2009 2:48:40 PM

No matter how hard I try to join others, I keep forgetting about them and returning to My Opera. left.
It's not about loyalty, I just like it here too much to waste time anywhere else. p

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, March 10, 2009 2:52:45 PM

Totally agree. Facebook sucks so much, even the version for those in the intelligence services.

I love the thought of spies updating their statuses and inviting others to join infiltrations though - "Totally infiltrated that terrorist group!!i1! Vlad from the other side infiltrated too and I got him drunk enough to say his real name and country of origin. His head's mounted above my bed now. LOLZ"

Angelikiellinidata Tuesday, March 10, 2009 3:40:16 PM

I love my Opera

Ruben Garciaeztigma Tuesday, March 10, 2009 3:59:38 PM

I don't use Facebook either, but it can't suck more than Hi5!

Charles SchlossChas4 Tuesday, March 10, 2009 4:44:05 PM

I am on MyOpera 97% longer than I am on Facebook during the day (facebook about 5 minutes a day if at all) smile

I just have facebook for high school and college friends, and some family

tho I did get one Opera convert that I know of from my facebook postings

Espen André ØverdahlEspenAO Tuesday, March 10, 2009 5:18:38 PM

My Opera owns most other blogging platforms (mostly because of the people here). We got other good sites like Virb and Vox. They are pretty shiny and My Opera needs a slight overhaul some places and get in some basic social networking features and we're good to go, but I can't complain. We're a very small team of people working on this service and with limited hardware. That just adds to the badass factor.

Why does that ring a bell? confused

Espen: The main feature that attracted me to Opera was the simplicity and full functionality.
To be honest, I kinda got scared when I began to see that the updates were starting to look a bit like Facbook or MySpace but that's just me.

Now, srsly, I like it this way and I wouldn't it to change. Maybe some extra space for photos (yeah I know, I know, limited hardware) but we do have a lot of photography fans here. cool

I'd love you to keep it simple and so pretty as it is today!! bigsmile

Dark FurieFurie Tuesday, March 10, 2009 6:20:37 PM

Because you're a spy Dan? p.

Social networking features lead to blog posts about cutting toenails, and MySpace style users. The serious sites however give more control to their users. In my opinion Myo should copy some features from Wordpress to allow greater sidebar control, especially the very useful and simple basic text/HTML sidebar add on.

yep, that's what i'm also waiting for. but my.opera just got 2m users compared with facebooks 175m... awww on the other side it's quality not quantity that matters; and we all know, where the quality's at home yes

KYrenKYren Tuesday, March 10, 2009 9:22:03 PM

What Furie said, copy some features from Wordpress.
I would like more PIM applications integrated to OC,like an online todo list.

slackwrdave Tuesday, March 10, 2009 9:33:33 PM

It would also be good to see ma.gnolia removed as a bookmarking option on my opera as they had total data loss in January and are now dead in the water.

Simpy would be a nice replacement, as it works well, and is odd and non-mainstream, just like many of us!

Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvlidrlaunch Tuesday, March 10, 2009 9:36:17 PM

KYren: You can use notes as a to do list. They're even accessible through the Opera Link interface here on My Opera.

I would not like more non-social apps integrated into My Opera Community. A to do list integrated into My Opera would only lead to more non-social apps like a calendar, email client, graphics editor, word processor and other unrelated stuff. No. Keep My Opera a strictly social site. I would hovever love if Opera Link turned social.

Angelikiellinidata Tuesday, March 10, 2009 9:40:45 PM

no

"Facebook could be worse... It could be MySpace."

Thanks. We will remove. Simpy looks interesting. Anyone else got some good tips for us?

Dustin WilsonKhadgar Wednesday, March 11, 2009 12:33:59 AM

I couldn't agree more. While my sister, her friends, and my friends were having drama on My Space and Facebook my life was content (in that department). I think My Opera could improve a lot by just letting the user have more control over his/her markup and not just CSS. A template system similar to what Tumblr does would be nice for that sort of thing.

Regardless, for keeping up with friends Twitter (and MyOpera!) does a much better job of that for me.

KarenNerak Wednesday, March 11, 2009 1:21:24 AM

If I were to add another pill to the plethora of pills I'm already taking, my diet would consist of only pills and coffee.

left Wait. I might like that idea. right This pill you speak of. Where would 'one' find/get it?

Matthewnoah counte Wednesday, March 11, 2009 2:18:09 AM

I've been very happy with MyOpera, and I do not have time to spend testing other such products, though I have some sense of what many of them do. I had never heard of Virb before today, and when I looked, I saw something that I've been hoping to see in blog software - threaded comments. It probably exists elsewhere, but I've not seen it. I sure would like it, though.

KarenNerak Wednesday, March 11, 2009 2:48:41 AM

Uh, Matthew. One word: PLURK. irked

Matthewnoah counte Wednesday, March 11, 2009 4:25:36 AM

Hahaha. Yeah. Plurk is a time sink. I didn't count it though, because it doesn't offer the breadth of amenities that MyOpera does (in fact, it only offers social microblogging, which it does pretty well). Then again, what other service can offer what MyOpera does? Ning maybe, but you run into the pay-to-play issue as soon as people start paying attention to you.

Assuming that someone starts paying attention to you...

KarenNerak Wednesday, March 11, 2009 4:29:37 AM

I stopped paying attention to you on Plurk. left I'm such a non-Plurking bad friend. cry

....back to The Biggest Loser I go! It's almost over!...so intense! bigeyes

Thruth WangThruth Wednesday, March 11, 2009 7:45:45 AM

Christopher DaSilvadannii Wednesday, March 11, 2009 11:01:27 AM

This is so off topic but, what is microblogging? confused

Using half a sentence to say what usually requires four paragraphs.

Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvlidrlaunch Wednesday, March 11, 2009 12:32:50 PM

Facebook groups have the power to influence companies to change their product line. I doubt any group can even make a dent in Facebook from the outside.

But I've started from the inside. By using applications to import my other social content. And inviting other people to those social apps. If more people do so, maybe we can take back the treasure from that dragon.
