The Dualism of Social Media

, , ,

Ever thought how social media applications [1] intend to create new ways we interact with each other and most rely on a heavy user interaction to make it work? One (academic) term often used to describe this is "critical mass":

"[...] the existence of sufficient momentum in a social system such that the momentum becomes self-sustaining and fuels further growth.

The purpose of social media is to facilitate communication and generate "buzz" (online activity) by people like you and me, but there's one thing which is getting on my nerve: The immense diversity (and overload) of upcoming services that makes it difficult to know where and who your contacts are! It just... fails. This is what I like to call the dualism of social media. The purpose of communicating with people just drowns in a mess of account management and always being on the look out for the "next big thing". It. Never. Ends.

Being in the industry myself I see a lot of BS (mostly because of ambiguous brands). Services like Ping.fm and Nambu brings out excessive forehead sweating just by reading their taglines! How can someone have so many active profiles and still manage to eat and take a crapper every now and then?

So, personally I choose not to jump on most of the social media sites. /rant off

Man, this post was actually three times as long.

Ah, the "I've got a million friends on Facebook, two million on MySpace, write blog posts three times a day, update my Twitter profile every five minutes, yet have a full time job and am a great mother to my 6 home-schooled kids" syndrome.

No-one real can keep up with so many sites. I'm addicted to the web and I only use this site and Wordpress, with the Wordpress one being mainly a back-up of the decent posts I've made here. I host the images I use in my blog elsewhere but don't get involved in the social aspect of that.

I guess the social web is kind of like high school. You can learn a lot, but nobody's there for that. We're here to build relationships with people - some of us want to build up some close friends, others want to feel popular by thinking everyone they've ever come in contact with is a dear friend (Facebook Fever) who absolutely has to know everything they ever do. Each type finds their own way rewarding and usually wonders what the hell the others are thinking by acting the way they do. Yeah, just like high school but with more women who want to think they're elegant cats and more guys who like to think they're rampaging wolves.

same here,

sometimes I wonder if people with so many active sites are not only addicted but they want "to belong"
something that in their real life are not able to achieve.
Every site needs time and that time
is taken away from their family,
when they pretend to be "there" for their kids,
as the above mother claims,
they fool themselves only,
we all know the reality.
I post daily on Opera and I find that the bond I developed with my loyal readers is priceless and worth the time and efford.

Dark FurieFurie Wednesday, April 8, 2009 8:33:53 AM

A lot of people want to belong to something, true. Also a lot of people don't want to make the effort it takes to be a part of something. It's kind of like religion in that aspect. A place to hang out where you can meet like-minded people and not have to have them in your home. The majority of people who go to church (in this country at least) are in it for the social aspect rather than the religious side of it. Then they realise that's not for them and come here sending me messages about how I'm going to hell for statements like that. lol A lot of people do have multiple profiles because they're looking for the right place for them and most sites don't let you shut down a username. Some have them so they can keep up with friends who've found the right place for them.

The mother I mentioned can be found all over the web to different degrees. She loves her kids and does everything for them constantly. We know that because she's constantly talking about it online 24/7. Yeah, slight problem there eh? lol My girl and I found this place when we were living in a hell town where we didn't actually want to socialise with any of the drugged up residents. This became our social hangout and a hobby we could share. We've had some ups and downs here, but we keep to the rule that real life comes first. It's a simple idea but so hard for people to carry out all the time. I've already burned one dinner by getting lost in my watchlist. o

hmmmmmmmmm should I open another can of worms here?
why somehow I also find,
people that go to church more often,
have more profiles in numerous sites?
They are also
the ones that need to confess more often too?
And when I say NEED I really mean it.
I am only spiritual nor religious but
I know if I go to hell ,
(a believe we live our hell or heaven in our life times only),
but if I will,
all my friends will be there too. party

There is a line btwn "Socializing" on line and "being lost" in it,
the net is a black hole
and the more one spreads profiles in it,
the deeper in the hole he/she gets.

As for moms that glorify themselves on line 24/7
about their "motherly skills" to their kids,
they are usually also the ones that have kids (according to the statistics) not doing good in school/High School Drop outs
and with early addictions to drugs and alcohol. sad

Family time is not just playing games on line together,
it is sharing concerns and feelings.

Socializing starts at home and if each and every one is just
in frond of a screen sending msgs to each other via FaceBook / Twitter and
what ever,
then no church can save their family from a down fall..

" I've already burned one dinner by getting lost in my watchlist. "

lol one is nothing! Pad yourself on the back ,
at least you are not one of the housewives that copy and pastes
pictures of cakes and more on line,
claiming they did them in their 24/7 on line confessions bigsmile

I have a profile on myspace, facebook, bebo, twitter, and here on my.opera. I have only like 10 friends on each. I update my status with ping.fm and that is about it. If someone sends me a message or comments on my status then I get an email on my blackberry, and most of the time reply from my phone unless I'm at a computer. I am rarely ever on the actual sites.

Things have changed. You joined here in 2007 according to your profile. They even changed names for members back then. Thing is, stuff like that interferes with the running of a site so they stopped doing things like that.

A little while ago (couple of months at most) someone was flooding the forums out. A quick look at his profile was all it took to see him threatening legal action against Opera because they wouldn't close his account, hence him acting like a 3 year old and throwing a paddy in an attempt to close it. Personally I'd have changed the password on the account, put a load of gay porn photos in his albums and put his e-mail address public so forum members could get revenge, but I'm not a mod here.

Anthony John Lourensantwap Friday, April 10, 2009 8:00:26 AM

He hee.. U funny Mik

My Opera accounts are part of your Opera Services account. The reason why we do not delete profiles here is because many use Opera Link and other services tied in with My Opera. If someone want their profile deleted they can request a manual ban from our end. Use the contact form.

We're not a**holes. If you want your account removed/deleted/moved/renamed, etc, we will do it.

Dark FurieFurie Friday, April 10, 2009 3:06:15 PM

I stand corrected. left

Dark FurieFurie Friday, April 10, 2009 9:13:16 PM

Never didn't believe you about the e-mail dude. I was just under the impression that things had changed. My mistake, just the format has changed. bigsmile

I spend about eight hours or more a day on My Opera and I still can't get through my watchlist. scared.
I do not have time for even more social networks. Hell, I don't even get time to do a daily blog. lol.
I've got no family, (siblings don't count) and finding people in my area capable of chatting about anything other than local gossip is unlikely. irked.
What was this post about again? *scrolls up to re-read the post*
Ah yes, the net is getting somewhat top heavy with social sites now, isn't it? yes.
