Working on the new My Opera and want your feedback
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 1:15:33 PM
I'm currently in Sweden, in Opera's Gothenburg appartment office. Yes, it is actually an apartment made into an office. It seems like most Swedes enjoy working in apartments. The best thing about it is no shoes on! Yes, holy mother of sweetness, the casual just got even more casual. I'm tempted to take off my pants soon too.
Fred and I are brainstorming the future of My Opera. The service will be upgraded visually and an early sketch of the new site looks something like this:
I want your feedback on what you want to see more of on My Opera and is this the correct approach we're taking with it? What we're thinking of doing in detail is:
- No longer have two consumer blogs for Opera (community and Choose Opera) - combine it in one "News" section, but have the option to spotlight community posts on the front page.
- Personalize your "Home" section with only personal things. More focus on the activity feed with quick links such as "add a new blog post", "upload pictures", etc. We also want to display more community activities in general.
- Replace the "Community" section with a "Popular" section and only show popular stuff happening on My Opera right now.
- "Operanize" the Opera section. More Opera customize stuff and move the Opera forums there.
What do you want to see done with My Opera and especially the official front page sections?
I'll end this post with a picture of Fred and my pink mouse.

Why stop there?
For myself, I'll be fine with anything on my opera that isn't too cluttered, blink, or has so much javascript that it slows my browser down (i.e. Slashdot). My opera is a good lookin' site.

I think "Community" should stay,
"popularity" was in High School and it should stay there...
I am just saying
wonderful list of ideas,
I am looking forward to see them happening

Reduce the height of top bar.
We have reported lot of :bug:s but not yet fixed.
Skin page needs improvement (feed and watch for new comments, comment editing, number of comments per page, etc.)
Custom error page.

Or a "Today is" announcement block linked to the countdowns and only showing when one hits zero. Or a popular posts block showing the 10 most visited on the blog.
2) I'd like to add my own comments underneath favourites. At the moment I don't use the feature because I can better explain things in the sidebar links, or in posts. Adding the ability to write comments would increase the value of the feature in my opinion.
3) Comment Moderation. I'd like to set a group of comments (all, members, friends, none) as safe and have them show up as normal, then the rest are kept private until I check them and allow them to be posted to my page. People in the group that are moderated will be told that their comment is awaiting moderation.
4) Inbox. I'd like to have threaded conversations appear there, with the ability to delete all parts with one click. I'd also like to select to view more than 10 messages on one page, and a single checkmark at the top of the column of messages to mark all for deletion.
5) Friends management. Ignore all option would be great.
6) Albums. Having one central image depository that allows us to select which of our albums a given image appears in would be great, allowing easy moving without losing comments and the ability to have the same image and comments appear in several albums.
7) Social networks. Automatic linking to networks is fine but sometimes people will only want one type of post to be pushed to the network. Having a checkbox inside the Add Post screen that allows us to choose whether to share the post or not as we're making it would be great.
8) Mailed blog posts. Currently when someone mails a blog post via e-mail or MMS the post shows up immediately. I was thinking that adding Draft to the subject would indicate to save the post as a private draft for later editing.
9) A screen high statue of me on the frontpage that all must click to worship before they can sign up.
10) Just for fun and a little competition, set the members of the week against each other in a monthly community vote to find the Member Of The Month. Then set 12 of them loose in an arena filled with weapons to find the Member Of The Year.
11) Opera Leapfrog, a simple system that when clicked takes you to a random post from any time that's in your language.
12) A way to flag blogs that appear as local when in another language so we can ignore them on the blogroll, or maybe have them changed from english to vietnamese.
13) A way to hide ourselves from the activity feed of anyone else.
14) Feed moderation. I'd like to set up my feed to only show a small introduction (like the watchlist does) and a read more link, along with sharing options. I've set up a Feedburner feed to do that but had to add it as a sticky post link meaning the effect is pretty much lost.
15) The ability to rearrange the sidebar elements in the order I prefer.
16) An optional Similar Posts section at the end of posts, that links readers to about five extra posts in the blog that are most similar to the one currently being read.
I don't think it's a good idea to move the forums. There's enough people wandering around the site lost who haven't found the forums to ask the questions they need to, without them being hidden away.

Each of us is an individual with different needs from a site. For example, of the things I asked for, I want 1,2,3,6,12,14 and 16 for myself. The rest are things I think others would find useful, especially number 9.

I'm thinking we could remove the community blog from the front page and put subscriptions and friend feeds there only. Perhaps with some options to filter by blogs, photos, statuses and so on. Having links to the blog post creator and photo uploader on the same page would be a good idea.
The forums needs its own news page, just like the messages and subscriptions. And we need to be able to subscribe to threads, sub-forums, forums, friends, you name it.
The mobile version of My Opera looks a bit outdated. Perhaps it could use some big thumb friendly buttons and icons for navigation.

I would like to see friends updates and status moved to the top of the page.
spotlighting specific blog posts is a fine idea, as long as it doesn't result in losing member of the week.
Otherwise knock yourself out with changes.

A couple weeks ago, I spotlighted a new member, which resulted in that person being in the #1 position in my sidebar. Now, I realize that to most people this is insignificant, but to me it's a big deal. I'm compulsive about the order in which things go!
Soooooo, in order to put things back in the proper order, I had to UNspotlight the previously spotlighted people and then REspotlight them in the proper order.
The option to be able to drag & drop the spotlighted junk on our About page would be incredibly spiffy. If not drag & drop, then perhaps some other system.

I thought of another option I would LOVE to have here on my.opera while I was shampooing my hair ten minutes ago! (approx.) It would be flippin' badass if there were an "Unsubscribe" button in the alerts section...next to the "Mark As Read" button.
I find that at times, I've either grown tired of a thread or it's all but died, and I get all pissy when I get an alert and then have to actually take the time to go to the person's blog & click the Unsubscribe button there. It'd be SO flippin' much easier if there was said button in the Latest News section!

No. We will still have the community section. We won't replace it. Bad choice of words from my end. We want to improve how people are finding groups, blogs, photos, whatever. We can get better at using tags, for example. Display community trends, like what Twitter is doing, etc. There's always room for improvement and that's what we're working on. We don't want to remove options or features. That's evil.TabTabmartel # Thursday, September 17, 2009 11:30:44 AM
