I read blogs for a living

And I think I like it

DotEd vs. Espen: Coffee Drinking Challenge

, , , ,

trophy

Done! I win!

DotEd and I had no idea we would have a small audience following these battles (yes, there will be several ).

It got hyped a bit, but we will do our best to entertain you. Maybe it will inspire you to do something similar with someone here at My Opera as well, that would've been cool!

To us, it's not as much the contest (or the coffee for that matter) thats cool, but the fact that two people, on different corners of the planet can have a public coffee drinking challenge spur of the moment and already have an audience waiting feverishly. It's awesome.

Below you see a chat log from yesterday when Ed was on his morning train to work that inspired to the first battle:

[07.06.2007 15:30:32] Ed Palumbo sier : yo

[07.06.2007 15:30:55] Ed Palumbo sier : i just accidentally called you

[07.06.2007 15:35:12] Espen A. sier : heya, no probs. was out getting coffee anyway

[07.06.2007 15:35:52] Ed Palumbo sier : we should have a day wehere we compete between ourselves as to who can have the most cups of coffee

[07.06.2007 15:36:06] Espen A. sier : i've had 6 so far, but is soon 4 pm here so...

[07.06.2007 15:36:17] Espen A. sier : what are u up to?

[07.06.2007 15:36:22] Ed Palumbo sier : and blog a picture of each cup before and after

[07.06.2007 15:36:29] Espen A. sier : ye

[07.06.2007 15:36:33] Espen A. sier : "The Race"

We had talked about doing this for some time, so we just decided to do it. There will be updates throughout the day on our blogs so you can follow each of us as we're chugging down coffee. Ed and I are not allowed to look at each others blogs due to time difference (so he don't see that I've had six cups and he just push for seven). We also encourage everyone who's following this to not reveal how many cups of coffee we've had to each other (but feel free to cheer for one of us :D).

The first cup

cup of coffee

Time: 09:43:16 AM

Arrived at work a bit late today. I have to remember to drink a lot of water today if I'm gonna win this. I have no idea how many cups of coffee Ed drinks, but I have a feeling it's a lot.

Number two

cup of coffee

Time: 10:11:13 AM

The first cup went fast. Went straight for another one. I'm feeling strong today.

Third cup

cup of coffee

Time: 10:33:13 AM

Have to calm down. Got some water as well. Don't want to hit the wall.

Four and five

cup of coffee

Time: 12:07:08 PM

Back from lunch. Had a cup of coffee with my meal, and another one when I finished.

Six!

coffee man

Time: 12:27:10 PM

Stacey took this photo of me. Thomas will shoot one of me taking a piss later.

Startin' to get messy

more coffee

Time: 13:29:01 PM

But it goes surprisingly well. Number seven is going down now.

Artistic

cup of coffee

Time: 14:44:42 PM

Thomas: "Geez, another cup of coffee?"

Black box of evil

black box of evil

Vetle was right.

Nine aaaand ten!

a lot of coffee

Time: 15:56:57

Two went down with lightning speed. I can really feel the coffee now. Hard to concentrate. Restless. A tasty cappuccino is next. That pure black coffee really messed my stomach up at the end. One hour left at work - kamikaze style now!

Stop!

After the cappuccino I didn't feel so good. But I managed to bring down one more. That brings me to twelve (12) cups of :coffee: I feeil I could've done better. :frown: But it's now DotEd's turn! Point your browser over to his blog! I hope it will be an exciting race ... :left: :right: :eyes:

And so it begins ...Rocket Brothers

Is that from a coffee machine at Opera, or are you running down to 7/11 every other minute?

DrLaunch 8. June 2007, 08:54

This is going to be so hard on your liver and kidneys. Make sure you try to balance it with other stuff. Like water.

They say developers are tools to convert caffeine into code. I wonder what what the result will be from you.

Yeah, that's a coffee machine here at Opera. I was thinking about headin' down to 7/11 later and get a big one ... And I know this will be hard on my organs. I've started to sweat a bit.

Stomyr 8. June 2007, 09:00

Well, I drink 5 (or sometimes more) cups of my own strong coffee on a daily basis - sometimes w/o eating anything. However, in your case (I don't know how many cups of coffee do you drink on a daily basis), I recommend you to eat something - or you'll have a bad stomach ache.

seaempty 8. June 2007, 09:22

hahahhaha awesome

Although this has me worried that I drink too much caffeine related products. If you have 6 or 7 cups a day, I have that in a morning O_o

Although it's mainly tea, which has some medicinal qualities.

Stomyr 8. June 2007, 09:26

You can't make a black tea as strong as my coffee is.

(*drinking my 4th cup of coffee*)

(And also as far as I know, the black tea has less caffeine, than coffee. )

Vetle Roeim 8. June 2007, 10:11

Dude, I don't think drinking that much Mysterious Black Goo from the Coffee Machine of Evil is a good idea!

Espen André Øverdahl 8. June 2007, 10:14

Updated with my fourth and fifth cup.

Kasper Adolph 8. June 2007, 12:05

Can you beat me? I drink two in the morning, two at lunch, two in the afternoon and two in the evening. And that's just for meals (breakfast, lunch, afternoon-something-which-includes-cake and evening-something-which-includes-cake). Then there's all the ones in between!

Go Espen! Go Espen! p:

DrLaunch 8. June 2007, 13:48

I wonder if you're going to get any sleep at all tonight.

Ramūnas 8. June 2007, 14:16

Who needs sleep anyway? No sleep FTW!

Go espen!

Vetle Roeim 8. June 2007, 14:53

Be careful! Here's what happened when Fry had 100 cups of coffee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWVWppDPpDg

Øyvind Østlund 8. June 2007, 16:43

Random guess. Vetler is your boss, and want you back on monday? If not before? :D

Matt Cox 8. June 2007, 17:47

Great stuff! You psycho!

At least your coffee looks like coffee; I took a trip over to DotEd's blog and his looks as fake as any other american product.

No matter how many cups he drinks, I can't help but wonder whether your coffee will still be stronger.

Karen 8. June 2007, 19:45

Finally someone else who takes their coffee as seriously as I do. :coffee:

.ed 8. June 2007, 21:52

AGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
i lost?!?!

man but i blogged sooo sweeter! comentary ftw!

oh and coxy, i was putting cream in mine, i cant really stand the taste of coffee... made this kinda hard, but i did my last one black as night.

Geoff Girardin 8. June 2007, 22:32

Perhaps it was the sweet commentary that slowed you down?

Anton 9. June 2007, 05:00

I give ed two cups of coffee as "he doesnt drink coffee" credit. I would probably puke at 5 cups, you guys are champs. Tomorrow you need to photograph your horrible horrible bagged-eyes.

.ed 9. June 2007, 07:49

my eyes are always sexy. but tomorrow they will probably be 1% less sexy.

by the way, it should be noted that on my train ride home i fell asleep, hard and fast. when i woke up i checked my pulse, normally when i am awake my pulse is a very low 6bpm, and i sleep at 40 or so.. (most people sleep around 60)

so i woke up and checked it, i was sleeping with a pulse of 82bpm.

scary

Miss Kimbers 14. June 2007, 06:52

haha Brilliant idea for a blog post! Did you have to pay for the coffees or were they free office ones?

I must say, I never liked coffee, but a friend made me a really nice coffee , so now I like it  I like putting sugar on a teaspoon, and then dipping it into the coffee and eating the coffeeish sugar Mmmmm :D

Espen André Øverdahl 14. June 2007, 08:24

I just had the (crappy) free office ones. :frown:

I've been drinkin' coffee since a was little kid!
