ICT DAY COURTESY OF MASENO UNIVERSITY

, ,

At first, the event attended by thousands of students seemed a logistical nightmare. But kudos goes to Anna for lending me a hand on that event that sounded too impromptu to us.
The detail depth of organization, publicity and the success attests to every member of Opera Campus Crew, Maseno University Chapter.
The very first edition of Maseno University ICT day, was a testament to the philanthropic spirit of the Dean of students, Chairman Computer Science Department, the VC, the list is endless.
The event was in one way a farewell to the current Vice Chancellor whose term is coming to an end this December. This one was a busy one unlike “our baby”. We didn’t have time to go round to look at what people were exhibiting. But among the exhibitors were:
1. Microsoft
2. CompLynnx
3. Zain Kenya
4. Massatech
5. SOMU- Our students organization leaders
6. Our ICT department
7. Our local radio station- Equator FM
8. Cisco, Kenya
9. Kenya Commercial Bank
10. Equity bank
11. Orange
Students and visitors went round absorbing this and that from one stand to another. Ours came as the third stand in the order prescribed by the organizers.
In the process, we got to share information about OCC, Opera 10.63 and Unite in detail. The final blow came at around noon-the Vice Chancellor’s convoy. With him was the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional manager Mark Matunga, Technologist Strategist Paul Roy and many others whose identity remained anonymous. From the photos on the right am sure everyone reading this is going OMG!!!
Whitney, we appreciate your effort for giving such a wonderful demonstration.

Opera In Kenya

About a month and half ago, I and Whitney decided to form a group on facebook whose main purpose was to advertise the campus crew activity. The target group was Maseno University students only as specified by the name "Opera In Maseno". The objective was met, but then we had too few people then.
When Zara learned about the group, she suggested that we should probably change the name to be Opera In Kenya so that it would be open to anyone from our country Kenya.

We saw it appropriate too since some of our former high school colleagues had already joined the group despite the it bearing the name Maseno. So we did changed the name to Opera In Kenya. We invited our friends from Kenya to join this group and most of them responded positively. Other OCC members are also very cooperative and some are in the process of inviting their friends too.
The population currently is 157 members majority being Maseno University students. This number is increasing tremendously with an average of 20 people joining in a week. This shows that after one year I will be having approximately 1500 members. The discussion board is not yet that active but I have noticed a number of postings of late. With the great support from Zara and Alexander I believe that the group will give its best.

Opera In Maseno University

We have been wondering how you write a blog on a recent success without looking or rather sounding like we are bragging. Anyway here I go. The day started quite like unusual. We had changed the dates due to a last minute venue dispute(it’s a very high trafficked venue) and spent the better part of our night with our significant others, no I'm kidding we were running around making sure that our friends and their friends knew of the changes and that all the equipment necessary would be there.

Friday the ninth of October, two classes till the Demo starts(had a very crucial Engineering Math lecture) hearts pounding, silent prayers being said to make the day a success and then the buzz of hustle and bustle, things needed and were done in seconds. At last the Demo stand was ready comprising of laptops, screens for slideshows, woofers for entertainment, registration forms and volunteers for all the work.
Amazing team indeed we have here.
Work was divided diligently and to ones appropriate strengths. More than two hundred students and eleven lectures attended the event.
All was as planned, some OCC members would direct passers-by from the adjacent road while others explained from the slides about Opera Software. Much emphasis was put on the newly released Opera 10, OCC was our third stage where they were given a thorough break down of the OCC and its activities including the curriculum.
Those with their laptops, flash-disks and any mass storage devices were given an opportunity to get the software. At this point registration forms were handed out to those willing to join OCC, of which many were. Our final stage was to show appreciation to those that had taken their time from their busy schedule to attend. We gave out "LOVE YOUR BROWSER" badges and a few pens. All in all attendance was so good we had to go for another batch of registration form (Zara can vouch for that from the high number of newly applications.) Here are a few photos and a video depicting events from that day.
