Russia and Ukraine browser usage statistics chart (2006-2008)

, , , , , ,

Browser usage in post-USSR countries such as Russia and Ukraine is very different from global statistics.
That's how it looks from 2006 to 2008, according to liveinternet.ru:

You can see how Opera browser compares to Firefox share -- they are almost equal.
Also notice a big and quickly increasing presence of Opera Mini.
But most exciting thing to notice is that Blue Sea of IE is drying out year by year, month by month.

I think that Microsoft with IE 8 release will fight back. My prediction that if MS will continue to bundle Windows with IE, IE's global market share may stabilize or even start groving again.
BTW, IE 8 is a pretty good browser...
All I want now (as a web designer) is a quick death for IE 6! Die! Die! Die!

I was in on the Russian Wap site revolution in 2006 at all the many .ru sites using the phone's built in browser or the very early google attempts at Wap formatting. Are these thousands of phones ever logged? I know they have lots of fun that was added to with abphone image search and file sharing sites.

One of the reasons is that some time ago in Russia you could by a CD full of software with cracks and keys. And on most of such CDs there was a copy of Opera. This way of getting software was quite popular (due to poor Internet coverage in the country, time of dial-up). And, Opera was much faster and stable that IE, so most people with Internet (dial-up) prefered to use Opera.

StatCounter shows that Opera is the most popular browser in Russia. The user base is also growing faster than Firefox’s.
