Dead: age 40 something

The trailer died before it's time
We had to move and leave our home behind. The trailer park is closing Jan 2011. And with no place willing to take on such an old trailer, and not being able to buy a lot to where I can park it, we have had to leave our home behind.

The battle with the trailer continues

Only because I had some money left over one day...

I repaired/replaced storm windows. Plastic wrap stuck over the windows wasn't gittin' it any more. Far too cold for that.

I installed what working windows came with the trailer. Took the busted ones to a glass shop. And measured what didn't ahve any windows at all. Got the repaired ones installed picked up the NEW windows and got them into place (more or less).

Still there was a couple of dollars left. I bought a few of the packets of wall outlet insulator kits. You know... the flat sheets about 1/8 inch thick with perforations for plugs or switches. Anyway my son and I went around and installed those.

In the kitchen the venting is thru the side wall with an old fan / twin door arraingment. So I cut two peieces of thinker foam and plugged that hole up. Danged fan didn't work anyway.

And that took care of two problems at once. It's a bit warmer in here and I no longer have any extra cash...

Upgraded (?) to Vista

,

Ok, it wasn't as bad as I first thought... I have Vista now and everything else is great - by comparison.

Opera 9.5

,

I'm sorry to have to say this, but Opera 9.5 is a disaster. I have been a long time user of Opera and I value having it on my computer... up until 9.5 came along.

I upgraded as I have done many times before. I looked at it and was impressed at the initial look&feel. But ALL my settings were gone. Book marks passwords addresses... everything.

This is NOT funny. I did NOT see any warnings. I did NOT see any dialog boxes asking me if or where my od info was. It was just like a NEW set up.

Sorry Charlie, you're out a here!

FORTUNATELY removing 9.5 left me with my intact previous version. With everything where it was.

For a few doallars more...

The trailer needed some holes repaired. Holes in the floor. (I dunno how I missed these when I was looking at it to buy).

Anyway... I had one hole - about 6 in in diameter right in front of the refridgerator. I was nervous over as I could see someone stepping thru it and a big lawsuit following.

Left over plywood from the water heater job was put to use again. I cut a piece (square) to just slightly bigger diemnsions than the hole and then cut the hole to fit the patch (Cleaver, huh? I watched This old house since the Bob Villa days) Along with two pieces twice as long as the hole for back-bracing I made short work of that nasty hole.

A slight adjustment to the throw rug in front of the refridg and it's as good as new.

I'm on a roll here...

Fist full of Dollars...

Had some money, had some time... Oh oh

I live in an older trailer. But it came complete with some places needing repairs. My Water heater sprung a leak. Not a drip drip drip sort of leak, not the kind you can't ignore for very long. <sigh>

Out with the old, in with the new. After a trip to Home Depot and cash exchanging hands, I loaded up the ol' VW and prepare to install the NEW water heater.

Getting the old one disconnect the retaining strap (it is a mobile home after all) and tip the bastard out of it's little cubbie hole and gently lay it on the ground. Well I did try to empty out the water. I put on a garden hose on the drain port. I would have bet there was more water inone of those tanks than what dribbled out of the hose. With the help of the park manager we got it on it's side, on the ground.

Then the fun begins... ( I seem to use elipses an awful lot, don't I?)

The leak had it's effect on the floor. Do you remmeber particle board? The stuff before waffer board.
Glue and saw dust. Prolly made the manufacturer a ton of money, until the first board got wet, that is. Water-proof glue would haave been a good idea back then, I bet.

No problem, a sheet of playwood and a piece of preasure treated 2x6 and we just make a new section of floor. Nothing fancy, who's gonna see it? And *I* think it's better than the rest of the trailers floors. Anyway, there was enough of the wood joists to make my repairs and we got the NEW water heater inplace and connected and we have hot water again. Wo hoo!!

The only problem was the hot water to the kitchen (just the other sidde of the wall0 got hooked up to the cold line and the cold water got hooked to the hot side. Well the water inlet was in a different place and with what we had on hand for plumbing we just switched the two lines under the sink. Except the cold water side (NOW hot) feeds the refridgerator.

I always save something for next time, how about you?

Months later

Trailer is moved... yeah!!

What an education!!!
Water in / water out. And everything in between. Shut down one bath room, to shorten plumbing chores. Too many leaks to frell with. Kitchen sink has HOT water but not cold. MY bathroom has water to one sink but not the other. In fact if you turn on the COLD water tap you get water -- everywhere under the sink. Tub has a steady leak and the toilet has none.

Furnace works -- all the time, it seems. When the sun comes out it gets hot and I only have two working windo cranks and they are on their last teeth.

Washing machine works OK (shakes on spin) but the drier is yet to be wired in.

Windows don't close very well but they match the front door.

But 6 more payments and its my castle!

Life is funny

Well not so much.

I'm moving, or trying to. I live in an apartment building and got an opportunity to move into a house trailer.

It had to be moved. Big ordeal here.
Remove the skirting.
Disconnect the electrical service,
water supply
remove the Air conditioners
several awnings
the sewer
Unblock
tip in the tip out section
reattach the trailer hitch
And of course it has no tires...

Well I had done such tasks before. Years ago... I have my son helpping me. No problem... Unfortunately I am no longer the man I once was. I'm several sizes bigger. I tackle what I can and with some unexpected help, I get it done, excepting the tires of course. I arrainge to barrow a set.

Geting the trailler moved turned out to be another problem. The mover (ottter driver) missed a couple of scheduled times. And then decided to tell me that the trailer might not fit on the lot...

Well I had already given notice based on his quoted price (which was wrong on the low side)

Several back and forths netting very little progress.

Opera site, NEW features

To me anyway. the photo section is pretty cool. I have photos on another site (WEBSHOTS) But this is a bit better. It took me a while to get the hang of uploading image files. They were not immediatly displayed and I feared the worse. Anyway I have a three albums going and ideas for more. I think this is a great boon to Opera users although I don't see where it's restricted to Opera owners exclusivly.

Makes me wonder what will they think of next?

Good Job Opera Team!!

USB or not USB That is the question

Seems all my USB ports are on vacation. I didn't give my permission, and yet there seems to be NO USB ports working.

Men are from Mars / Women are from Venus -- Well maybe not

I've been thinking about that saying/book. Although I have not read the book, I still have opinions about the saying.

I guess they are trying to say men and women have no idea what each other is thinking.

But I put it to you, no one has an inside look into someone else's thoughts. I can be completely baffled but a males thinking on some subject as I can be by a woman's.

Did I start a new gender? No. It's far more likely that no one has any better notion on what someone else is thinking, gender notwithstanding.

On the other hand, I became a single parent (w/custody) I felt many of the same things mothers feel due in large part to my circumstances.

When my son was little (4 years old) I fed him and bathed him while I was working (I'm a truck driver). I got him enrolled into school. I worried over his every day away from me, much like the other mothers did. Just like my first wife did our family.

I railed against the judical system when child support was late (7 years late).

What you don't know is I have been on both sides of the family falling apart nightmare. I have been the non custodial parent and now I'm the one with custody. A unique perspective, wouldn't you agree?

But this isn't my only basis for my opinions. I submit that no one has very much insight into anyone else's mind, male or female. In other words, I can't read a females mind, not because I'm a male, but rather because I can not read anyone's mind.

When placed into similar circumstances male or female will act very much alike. NOT exactly but similarly.

If I become enraged, I might smack you in the mouth. A woman similarly enraged, might cry, or she might smack you in the mouth.

Or faced with some other problem, both genders will solve it with whatever skills they happen to have. Small guys might reach the same conclusion as a female, Or women with more of a physical presences (delicately meaning big) but it's more a choice based on physical size rather a limit put upon by gender.

At least I think things tend to go that way with other factors playing less of a role in our choices.

So are men and women from different planets? I think we share the same planet and we share the same zip code and even live on the same block.

Things I'd like to see...

I'd like to see (hear) Farscape on Sirius Radio. I think a radio drama would allow the fans to still enjoy the show and also the stars could still persue their on camera roles.

I'd like to see a Star Trek show based around Star Fleet Academy. Incorporating clips from all the other franchises as histroy lessons where the original actors are no longer able or willing to perform. I think this could be the longest version yet. Indiviuals (~25%) of the main cast would graduate every year and be replaced. Freshman could be young - unknown actors (ie ER) With veteran actors holding teaching positions/administration. Class assignments might be something like 'Provide 500 megs on the history of the ships named Enterprise (video/comments)' Or guest lecturers could be on campus such as Avery Brooks (Capt Sisko).

You read it here first!! (-:

Aw crap...

It seems my hard drive died(on Dad) furious cry faint

Shouldn't I know better... by now?!?

I THOUGHT I was clearing out space on my hard drive. I didn't REALLY need to. I had extra users on my system (earlier experiments). So I delete a couple.

I thought I was deleteing inactive accounts (I was sure Windows would mention if I was deleteing files in use... Tain't so. Next time I rebooted... _I_ was gone. Some idiot was there looking back at me.

I say IDIOT because he knew nothing about me. Contacts passwords(wand) bookmarks... nada!

I have searched everywhere I can think of for this info... Many dead-ends have been followed.

In another experiment, I had exported my contacts so I did run accross those. But importing those to a list Opera already had... Now I need to prune away the NON contact enteries.

Live and learn... trail and error.

PS I had auto back ups on but alas something else had'em turned off.

Dead Like Me

I just learned of the SHOWTIME show 'Dead Like Me' was cancelled. Too bad. I really like this show. Bought the first seasons show on DVD. I guess it weren't enough to convince anyone of how good (maybe 'different' is a better word) is/was.
irked

Mail

It seems I can't see mail... well at least some of it is ,arked read and there for will not appear for any reason.

I know there are icons that control what is visible but no combination (so far) has made past mail visible. I see a count (0 12890) and NOTHING I can do
