It has been a long time since our last posting.

But still, quietly, without fanfare, each week we have been gathering for mindfulness practice. Over three years now, we have been gathering. Quietly, without fanfare.

We will continue to do so.

If you live in the Birmingham area, and would like to cultivate your own sense of mindfulness, please feel free to join us Monday evenings, 7-8:30 pm, at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Indian Springs.

Here is our schedule for the rest of the month:

Monday, April 28: Touching the Earth

Each gathering follows a similar format:

On Poems, Prayers, and Practical Practices

, , , ...

When daylight savings time came, the light changed. Have you noticed?

In the mornings, on waking, the first thing I notice is a row of trees across the street. In the direct light of the day, they look red and muted. In the slanty morning light, they look like brilliant balls of flame.

Both ways, those trees are exquisite.

In the evenings, a warm orange washes over everything, bringing even more new hues out of the already multicolored landscape. This light stops me. Breathtaking beauty, all around.

In preparation for the coming winter, I've been feeding myself poems. When a poem like Mary Oliver's "Mindful" comes into my world, I wonder why on earth doctors do not prescribe poetry like pills. It is so good for the soul, with very few side effects.

In preparation for Thanksgiving, here's a new video from Brother David Steindl-Rast: Giver of All Good Gifts

This past Monday at our sangha meeting, we practiced mindful eating. It is amazing how good a simple clementine can taste. All it takes is slowing down, being there, enjoying each bite. It works best when there's a friend there to share the practice and the joy.

Here is the latest version of the Five Contemplations. Feel free to print these out and use them as a blessing before each meal. It is sometimes fun to begin a meal with just a few minutes of mindful eating before talking. Enjoy!

This food is a gift of the earth, the sky, numerous living beings and much hard and loving work.

May we eat with mindfulness and gratitude so as to be worthy to receive it.

May we recognize and transform our unwholesome mental formations, especially our greed, and learn to eat with moderation.

May we keep our compassion alive by eating in such a way that we reduce the suffering of living beings, preserve our planet and reverse the process of global warming.

We accept this food so that we may nurture our sisterhood and brotherhood, strengthen our sangha and nourish our ideal of serving all beings.

If you are here, we'd love to have you come sit with us any Monday evening. If you are far away, we'd love to hear news from your life and your practice.

Thank you all for being there.

Not a Solitary Path

, ,

"There is a lot of suffering, yes, and we have to embrace all this suffering. But to get strong, we also need to touch the positive elements, and when we are strong, we can embrace the suffering in us and all around us. If we see a group of people living mindfully, capable of smiling, of loving, we gain confidence in our future. When we practice mindful breathing, smiling, resting, walking, and working, then we become a positive element in society, and we will inspire confidence all around us. This is the way to avoid letting despair overwhelm us. It is also the way to help the younger generation so they do not lose hope. It is very important that we live our daily life in such a way that demonstrates that a future is possible."

Update on Fires Near Deer Park Monastery

, ,

It is wonderful to be part of such a wide-ranging, deeply caring community. Most of the hits on this website in the past few days have been from people checking in on how Deer Park has fared in the recent fires.

Here is a message shared by Karen Hilsberg on October 23:

Dear friends,

I have spoken with a several sangha friends today who have been in touch with our Deer Park monastic and lay friends today, and everyone is safe...in temples in Long Beach and Orange County. The fire is not too near to Deer Park monastery at this time and though parts of Escondido have been evacuated, others are able to remain safely in their homes.

Please continue to pray for rain and for the wellness and happiness of so many people who have lost their homes in these fires in Southern California. It is a reminder of the impermanence of life and how fortunate we are to have this practice, our teacher and our sangha... plus so many conditions for our own happiness here and now.

May we all be happy and well,
Karen

According to this blog, the monastics have now been able to return to Deer Park safely. Apparently the winds slowed down and the fires stopped three miles from the property line.

Another Southern California sangha member recommended clicking here for a good map of the area that shows where the fires are and what the current evacuation status is.

While Deer Park appears to have been spared for now, there are so many others in that area who will be needing assistance of all sorts. If you feel moved to contribute in some way, visit North County Times / CW5 Fire Relief Campaign.

May the rains come to aid the firefighters in putting out the remaining fires.
May all who need it find safe shelter,
and all the care and support they need to begin to build new lives
from the ashes.

Pray for Rain

,

As you know, much of Southern California is burning.

Once I realized how extensive the fires were, I began to make some enquiries about Deer Park, the monastery in Escondido, just outside of San Diego.

I did not get any news, until this morning.

Apparently, the residents have been evacuated, and they are safe. But the fires, on last reporting, are "in their back yard."

For those of you who would like more details, please click here.

For all who are suffering in Southern California right now,
may there be rain.
For all the places that are burning,
let there be less wind.
For all who lose their homes,
let them find safe harbor and warm hearts to welcome them.
For all of us who are watching
from afar,
let us find ways to help.

Once, in Nicaragua,
going around the poor barrios of Managua
in search of food, clothing
for people who had been hit by a tidal wave on the Pacific coast,
I was struck over and over again
by people's generosity ~
a woman with two shirts hanging on her clothesline
gave us one, with these words:

"When we had the hurricanes,
the floods, the earthquakes,
the volcanic eruptions. . .
others helped us.

Now it is our turn."

Another day, it may be us.

Today, since it is our brothers and sisters,
how can we help?

The Five Mindfulness Trainings and Healing Our Home

"The Five Mindfulness Trainings are Love itself. To love is to understand, protect, and bring well-being to the object of our love. The practice of the trainings accomplishes this. We protect ourselves and we protect each other."

Global Cooling Day

,

Aware of the suffering and degradation brought about by the unsustainable use of material resources on the Earth, we are determined to find ways to use resources with mindfulness and with a clear view to the long-term effects of their use on ourselves and future generations. Knowing that collective suffering such as global climate change, deforestation, water scarcity and the pollution of the air, soil and waters arises from the daily actions of human beings, we are committed to transforming our way of life in order to bring about peace and harmony within our family, our local communities and ecosystems, and the world.
