Update on Fires Near Deer Park Monastery

Here is a message shared by Karen Hilsberg on October 23:
Dear friends,
I have spoken with a several sangha friends today who have been in touch with our Deer Park monastic and lay friends today, and everyone is safe...in temples in Long Beach and Orange County. The fire is not too near to Deer Park monastery at this time and though parts of Escondido have been evacuated, others are able to remain safely in their homes.
Please continue to pray for rain and for the wellness and happiness of so many people who have lost their homes in these fires in Southern California. It is a reminder of the impermanence of life and how fortunate we are to have this practice, our teacher and our sangha... plus so many conditions for our own happiness here and now.
May we all be happy and well,
Karen
According to this blog, the monastics have now been able to return to Deer Park safely. Apparently the winds slowed down and the fires stopped three miles from the property line.
Another Southern California sangha member recommended clicking here for a good map of the area that shows where the fires are and what the current evacuation status is.
While Deer Park appears to have been spared for now, there are so many others in that area who will be needing assistance of all sorts. If you feel moved to contribute in some way, visit North County Times / CW5 Fire Relief Campaign.
May the rains come to aid the firefighters in putting out the remaining fires.
May all who need it find safe shelter,
and all the care and support they need to begin to build new lives
from the ashes.
