Firefly Sangha: Birmingham, Alabama

Meditation & Mindfulness Practice in the Tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh

Love-Growing, Sangha-Building at the Botanical Gardens, and Retreating

Hi everyone,

It is a welcome grey evening here in Birmingham tonight. After the drought we've been having, hardly anyone complains when it looks like rain!

It's a good time for some reflection and some planning ahead.

So here are some thoughts:

1) What do folks think about the notion of a class on love?

2) Save the date: September 23, 9-11 a.m. Japanese Garden Meditation Gathering.

3) Thich Nhat Hanh's North American Tour. August-October.

More details:

1) Potential Love-Growing Class. The Buddha had so much to say about love that is really useful in everyday life, and Thay has some beautiful teachings on love. For those who are interested, read the post below and let me know what you think.

2) Save the date: September 23, 9-11 a.m. Japanese Garden Meditation Gathering. Sandy Waltz, coordinator of the Japanese Gardens Zen Rock Garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, is offering a special gathering to practitioners from Birmingham's three main meditation communities: the Shambhala Center, Losel Maitri, and our very own Firefly Sangha.

We will gather for sitting and walking meditation, followed by tea and and a chance to meet each other. The gardens will be reserved for this time and purpose, so please only come if you would enjoy practicing with others in this very special time and place. Further details below.

3) Thich Nhat Hanh's North American Tour. August-October. If you have ever thought about attending a retreat with Thay and the monks and nuns from the Plum Village sangha, now is the time to be making plans. There are still places at retreats in Colorado, California, and New York in August, September, and October. Many, if not all, of these retreats have children's programs.

Please visit www.deerparkmonastery.org or www.bluecliffmonastery.org for details and to register.

I am making plans to go to the October 12-16 retreat at Blue Cliff Monastery in New York and would love for you to join me for what will no doubt be a beautiful time in the changing leaves.

Thank you all for being there, taking gentle steps on the earth.

I am grateful for you.
