Song of the Week #15

,

D A D : Nineteenhundredandyesterday

Welcome back, Ladies, Gentlemen and Others bigsmile This week, I'm featuring a band that most of you won't know - they're a Danish band, calld D A D. The name originally was Disneyland After Dark, but good ol' Disney threatened legal action, so they changed the name. Disney, like Sony, are a complete bunch of dorkmeisters, in my opinion lol Anyhoo - the featured song is from what has become one of my favourite albums 'Everything Glows', from 2000. The band have 11 studio albums out, 3 live albums, and 3 compilations, as well as a host of singles. As it happens, I'm lucky enough to have The Overmuch Box, which is all of the studio albums, plus a remastered release called 'Standin' on the Never Never' from 1985, which hasn't been available on CD before. I'm after the 3 live albums now bigsmile

So - anyway - as my regular listeners know, my best friend is Danish, and she introduced me to this outfit way back when, years ago, and they have grown and grown in my estimation and kinda in my heart too - they aren't *amazing* musically - but they're a bloody good, solid, constantly developing Rock band, who write some bloody *excellent* songs, lyrically. And they *are* getting better and better with each album. If you stroll with me through the Overmuch Box, you'll hear them growing - it's a bloody good trip, I must say smile

Alright. Here they are on Amazon, BUT - do yourself a BIG favour and follow my example, get the Overmuch box set from the D A D official website, you'll save yourself megabucks, you'll get a fucking excellent and entertaining collection of CDs (and a nice thick booklet with history, lyrics & all the usual goodies), and a very groovy T shirt or two if you feel like it smile I just can't praise this band enough. Most of you will know that I have a *lot* of music in my collection, it's my 'thing', and I wouldn't be going on this much about a band if they weren't something special. From rough, ironic cowboy-junky rock to shit-hot, clever songwriting outrock that really doesn't pull any punches....9/10 on my musicometer bigsmile - and puhlease watch these 2 fantastic youtubes of them rocking out at the Roskilde music festivel in 2005 - damn, I just LOVE bands that can play the audience! bigsmile Man, I *so* wish I'd have been there!!! :

I really like D.A.D. They call their music Cowpunk, and what I really like is that they have got a sense of humour.

I featured their song I won't cut my hair almost two years ago, and I still love that song.

sing I won't cut my haaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrr!!! sing

@Pussy cat : yeah - ahahaha, I remember that - wow, was it *that* long ago?

I can assure you that I'm featuring this band again, because I *really* like this band and I think more people outside of Denmark should know about them bigsmile

Not my thing I'm afraid left but still, broadening horizons and all that smile

That's right, Kimmie - in my opinion, you don't know what you like until you hear it - so you never know, there might well be a D A D song coming up that fits your ears bigsmile

Bruce Dickinson usd to play them a bit. They never stuck in my head though.

FlaRin Monday, March 14, 2011 8:28:35 PM

Never heard of him, Gavin - who is\was he? :interested:

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Monday, March 14, 2011 8:42:42 PM

He's the lead singer of Iron Maiden, but he did a great radio show on BBC 6music for years. Before the current idiocy meant drastically cut budgets.

FlaRin Monday, March 14, 2011 9:36:54 PM

Oh - that Bruce Dickinson lol I haven't been in UK for 16 years, so must have missed it lol

Every time I think of D.A.D. I think of the song they made for fun, that became a hit. The band themselves was surprised, but there you have it.

sing

I'm countin' the cattle: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...
I'm countin' the cattle
Just to check if there alive
I'm countin' the cattle: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
I'm countin' the cattle once again.

sing
